from the broadcast center in new york city, i'm tony dekople. 2018, this is the it's monday, october 22, 2018, this is the "cbs morning news." the migrant caravan that's headed for the u.s. is growing even larger. they're struggling to keep going through scorching heat and president trump plans to stop them at the border. a new explanation in the killing of judicial nist jamal khashoggi as the saudi crown prince distanss himself from involvement. and they're old enough to vote and they're headed to the polls. young voters and the issues that are important to them.

good morning from the studio 57 newsroom from cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be would you, i'm anne-marie green. the caravan making its way towards the united states, defiant and determined, their numbers are growing. with reports topping 7 thousand. they are being helped by sympathetic mexicans and most of them are being helped in tapachula, mexico. president trump says he'll use the american military to close the u.s. border if the caravan continues to advance. we go there now. >> are you tired? are you hungry? >> reporter: we found these two resting just ahead of the caravan. [ speaking foreign language ] she says so many people have been helping them here that they're eating more here than in honduras.

the caravan is coming right now. they were overtaken by a sea of migrants streaming from mexico's southern border heading north. most are from honduras claiming poverty and gang violence. karen was walking separately with the crowd with her friends. once they reunited they couldn't go on. it's been a grueling ten days for this family to get to this point. do you know where you're going? the united states, she knows clearly. do you know why? your mama wants to go. under black hawk helicopters those that could scrambled on to trucks, but most were on foot, like these men traveling with a baby. they have diapers, they have milk that people have been helping them. who's been helping you? in guatemala they got a lot of help and here they've gotten a lot of help.

deception. laura podesta is here in new york. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. despite acknowledging that deception, president trump has refused to halt a $110 billion arms sale to saudi arabia, though he said he is considering sanctions against those found responsible for khashoggi's death. the president of turkey is promising to release details of his country's investigation into the death of journalist jamal khashoggi tomorrow saying it will be revealed in all its nakedness. over the weekend, saudi arabia released its version of what happened. that khashoggi died during a fistfight with officials in the saudi consulate in istanbul on october 2nd. >> the individuals who did this did this outside the scope of their authority. there's wads was a mistake made and what compounded that was the attempt to cover-up. >> reporter: they said it was a rogue operation and said crown

prince bin salman was never involved. >> they said a whole lot of things that was not right. you don't bring a bone saw to an accidental fistfight. >> reporter: for three weeks they denied any involvement and claimed at one point khashoggi left the consulate later that day. >> the crown prince has his fingerprints all over this and the fact that he is heading up the investigation makes it totally incredible. >> reporter: they're pressing for a statement for exactly what happened. president trump told "the washington post" the saudi's stories are all over the place but added he would love if the crown prince was not responsible. and the crown prince has called jamal khashoggi's son to express his condolences. anne-marie. >> thanks alet, laura.

russia says president trump's decision to withdraw from a nuclear weapons treaty is a dangerous step. they announced the u.s. is leaving the 1987 nuke forces treaty that prohibits the launching of ground cruise missiles. they say russia has violated terms of the agreement. russia denies the allegations. u.s. national security adviser john bolton begins two days of talks in moscow today. a kremlin spokesman says president vladimir putin wants answers. president trump says that he wants to implement a major tax cut for the middle class. he talked about his plans after a

24-year-old voting block that came of age in a politically divided america shaped by post 9 sln 11 terrorist threats and a 24-hour news cycle. democrats are focusing on healthcare while the gop touts its success with the economy. >> we want to see the growth we've had continue. >> but there's something else animating the midterms. >> the election of donald trump. >> reporter: while the 2016 woke up his peers, the gun debate is moving them. >> sandy hook happened when i was in seventh grade and this has just kept happening over and over again and there hasn't been any sort of legislative initiative to help curb this nonviolence. >> reporter: rock the boat is a nonprofit that registers and encourages young voters. she says engaging includes teaching. >> they're largely self-consbus -- self-conscious about their understanding of our government.

continues for a teenager suspected of shooting and killing a police officer. he was shot saturday as he checked out a report of a suspicious car parked near a school. police are searching for 18-year-old tafari main nerd. a second teen was arrested for allegedly pointing a gun at an officer after the shooting.
