2018. this is the "cbs morning news." a plane carrying 189 people plunges into the sea off indonesia minutes after takeoff. crews are pulling debris from the water as families gather at the airport and pray. religious leaders from all faiths and community members in pittsburgh come together to honor the 11 people killed in the synagogue mass shooting. a federal prosecutors seek approval to pursue the death penalty for the suspected

gunman. and the best team in baseball wins it all in 2018. >> the boston red sox are world series champions. captioning funded by cbs good morning from the studio 57 newsroom from cbs headquarters here in new york. i'm anne-marie green. the suspect in the mass murder of 11 people in a pittsburgh synagogue will be in court today. robert bowers would koh facould death penalty. the victims range in age from 54 to 97 and we're hearing from some of the people who were inside the tree of life synagogue when the shooting began saturday. hilary lane is at the temple. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. investigators here is a the synagogue as a crime scene could take about a week to process. in the meantime we're learning some of the victims were at a bris, that's a ceremony to

welcome a baby boy into the world. 20 minutes into that ceremony, a gunman opened fire. >> he didn't see us, thank god. >> reporter: barry werber was in a dark room with fellow worshippers hiding in the synagogue. during a pause in the shooting, 88-year-old mel wax was shot and killed. police say wax was one of 11 people killed by robert bowers. federal prosecutors are seeking approval to pursue the death penalty. >> during the course of a deadly assault on the people of synagogue, bowers made statements regarding genocide and his desire to kill jewish people. >> reporter: and they're leaving flowers and candles at the site to honor the victims, among them a husband and wife, two brothers, a doctor and a professor. friends say cecil rosenthal and his brother david never missed a

synagogue when shots rang out and the latest from jeff glor. a day after the massacre, president trump blamed the media for the v volatile political atmosphere in n this cntry. in aweet he said the fake news is doing everything in their power to blame republicans, conservatives, and me for the division and hatred that has been going on for so long in our country. honestly it's their fake and dishonest reporting which is causing problems far greater that they understand. mr. trump will be traveling to pittsburgh in had the near future but did not say when. a recent report shows that hate crimes are up in most cities and jews are being victimized more than any other group. meg oliver has that story. >> the kids are being targeted

hatred or bias. more were against jewish. >> there's so much hate speech right now, that we -- so much tribalism, so little coming together, that we need to focus on that. >> the adl also just released a report that found social media harassment targeting jewish americans has increased around the midterm elections and two-thirds of those online attacks were from people were not bots. meg oliver, cbs news, new york. the florida man accused of sending packages containing pipe bombs to prominent democrats and other critics of president trump is said to make his first court appearance in florida today. he faces five federal charges and more than 50 years in prison if convicted. he was arrested saturday after

they identified him through fingerprint and dna evidence. authorities allege he was responsible for sending at least 13 explosive devices last week. a search is under way for a plane that crashed in the waters off the waters of java. the plane went down 13 minutes after takeoff from jakarta this morning. boats have found debris from the plane. a official said the crew had asked to return shortly before they lost contact. they are trying to find the black box and retrieve it. thousands of central american migrants are planning to resume their trek through southern mexico this morning as they try to reach the u.s. border. meanwhile, 700 people in a second caravan broke through border barriers along the guatemala/mexico border.

the first group did the same thing more than a week ago and clashed with mexican police. a 26-year-old honduran man in the second group was killed from a rubber bullet hitting his head. for the fourth time in 15 years, the boston red sox are world series champions. >> here comes a 1-2 pitch. red sox win the world series! 5-1 the final tonight. >> boston pitcher chris sale struck out dodgers slugger manny machado for the final out. the sox won four games to one. it follows their team record in the regular season and a dominate series in the playoffs. they had strong pitching from david price and two home runs off the bat of steve pearce. pearce hit a homer as well. he was named mvp. coming up, a survival story.

. brazil elects its next president and a man who fell down an abandon mine shaft speaks out. those are some of the headlines on the morning news stand. tucson.com reports the arizona man who was rescued from a mine plans to keep hunting for gold. john waddell was trapped for nearly three days without food or water. he was rappelling into the mine when his rigging broke and he fell. he broke his leg in the impact. yesterday he described the moment he knew that he was going to make it. >> i started hearing someone hollering back, and i broke down and started crying because i knew that, you know, i'm going to get out of here. >> while he was trapped, waddell also encountered rattlesnakes. he killed them with the same stick he was using as a splint

of anti-semitism but then he got sid tracked. >> reporter: the president and first lady greeted trick or treaters at the white house after saying an act of hate should not force the annual event to be canceled. in indiana yesterday, he condemned the massacre. >> there must be no tolerance for anti-semitism in america or any form of religious hatred or prejudice. >> reporter: but moments later he was making jokes. >> maybe i should cancel this arrangement because i have a bad hair day. >> reporter: critics argue the president has consistently failed to show moral leadership in the wake of hate-filled incidents such as the august 2017 white supremacist rally in charlottesville. >> you had very bad people in that group, but you also have people that were very fine people on both sides. >> reporter: adam schiff says the president has created a toxic climate. >> the tone that he sets is one of division, often one of hatred, sometimes one of
