57 newsroom here at cbs headquarters in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. pittsburgh's jewish community will start to say its final good-byes to the 11 killed in saturday's synagogue massacre. it comes the same day that president trump and the first lady are visiting to pay their respects. they're not being welcomed by everyone. hilary lane is at the synagogue. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. some members of the jewish community here have penned a letter to president trump asking him not to come, saying his rhetoric incites violence. in the meantime, funerals are beginning for the victims. some have been moved to larger locations to accommodate the thousands that plan to pay their respects. funerals for those killed in saturday's massacre at pittsburgh's tree of life synagogue begin today. >> we will rebuild, and we'll be stronger because we're tree of life. we're not a tree of death. >> reporter: rabbi jeffrey meyers helped several members of

his congregation get to safety. he will preside over the brothers' funeral this afternoon. >> we will honor them in some way that distinguishes them to get beyond that atrocious act. >> reporter: prosecutors intend to seek the death penalty against robert bowers who they say killed all 11. >> rest assured we have a team of prosecutors working hard to ensure that justice is done. >> reporter: president trump and first lady melania will come here today to pay their respects to the victims and visit injured first responders. but some members of the jewish community say the president is partly to blame. barry wurbur who hid during the shooting took issue with the president identifying as a nationalist. >> the last political group that i heard iowe nas. >> reporter: mr. trump backed up his stance last night on fox news. >> i'm proud of this country, and i call that nationalism. i call it being a nationalist.

i don't see any other connotation than that. >> reporter: while some local and religious leaders remain divided on whether the president should visit, the tree of life synagogue says mr. trump is welcome. it is customary in the jewish religion to bury the dead immediately. it's believed in that way the soul can transcend into heaven quickly. it's followed by a seven-day mourning period called shiva. in the meantime, at the synagogue here, a memorial for the victims continues to grow. in pittsburgh, hilary lane. back to you. >> hilary lane, thank you very much. before the suspect opened fire in the synagogue, his hatred of jews was evident on social media.as jef reportse >> repter: synagogue shooting t posts and reposts were filled with hate, referring to jews as the children of satan, and both jews and muslims as filthy and evil.

his posts were on gab.com which bills itself as a haven for free speech. critics say it's a gathering place for white nationalists and neo-nazis. 4chan and red at also draw anti-semitic rants. the defamation league said his group monitors dozens of social media platforms and hundreds of sites. >> various online platforms have become the mechanism of choice for individuals to share, disseminate vitriolic, anti-semitic propaganda. >> reporter: most of power bowers -- bowers' comment were protected by the first amendment until he said "screw your optics, i'm going in." local and federal law enforcement agencies work with companies like facebook and twitter to flag any speech that poses a threat. but there's a limit to what the police and fbi can do. ron hosko, a former assistant director of the fbi, says the

first amendment and justice department guidelines prevent the fbi from monitoring social media without investigative cause. >> they're aware. their ears are open. they're certainly engaged with federal, state, local law enforcement. but there's no fbi component that is the social media police watching all that we say and do. >> reporter: we checked and found that last year there were more than 16 million tweets involving hate speech. that far outnumbered tweets mentioning the super bowl and the television show "game of thrones." jeff pegues, cbs news, washington. investigators say that the man suspected of sending bombs in the mail to prominent democrats and critics of president trump had a list of more than 100 other people who authorities believe were intended targets. cesar sayoc made his first appearance in miami federal court yesterday. it came the same day a suspicious package was intercepted in atlanta addressed to cnn headquarters. if tied to sayoc, it would be at least the 15th potentially

explosive device he's accused of sending. the fbi is warning there could be others in the mail. sayoc said little in court, but witnesses say he became emotional. >> he made eye contact with somebody who was in the back of the courtroom. and he started tearing up. >> sayoc is scheduled to be in court on friday for a hearing on whether he should get bail. trousz housands of migrants be at the border at the end of the week. a caravan of migrants continues to make its way through mexico headed for the border. laura podesta is in new york. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the pentagon is calling this operation faithful patriot. now we have a clearer picture oh the border, including what kind of accommodations they can expect as they wait to find out if they'll be let in. specif lasnight on h he' handle the migrant caravan headed up through mexico toward

the u.s. border on. fox newschannel "the ingraham angl angle," said he spoke about tent cities as they wait for their application to be approved. >> we're not going to build structures and spend hundreds of millions. we're going to have tents. they're going to be nice, and they're going to wait. if they don't get asylum, they'll get out. >> reporter: he said very few will gain asylum, and he want to -- he wants to wide out possible infiltrators he says are inva invading the group. >> we're catching. we're not releasing. >> reporter: there will be more than 5,000 troops deployed to the border. officials say the soldiers who do not have the authority to apprehend migrants will close gaps and strengthen security at points of entry. >> we will not allow a large group to enter the united states in an unsafe and unlawful manner. >> reporter: many migrants are

from el salvador, guatemala, and honduras are hoping to qualify for asylum by proving they face persecution if they return to their home country. and the u.s. military has already begun delivering army equipment and jersey barriers to the border. the thousands of troops are expected to arrive by friday. anne-marie? >> laura podesta here in new york. thanks a lot, laura. authorities in north carolina are calling a deadly high school shooting a case of bullying that escalated out of control. a candlelight vigil was held for the 16-year-old student who was shot and killed yesterday morning at butler high school near charlotte. another 16-year-old is under arrest, charged as an adult with first-degree murder. police did not say which student was being bullied. the school was locked down for a while as parents rushed there to make sure their children were safe. classes are canceled for today. coming up on "the morning news," a shoot-out in arizona. three state troopers are injured

a shooting on the interstate in phoenix. the chase ended when police crashed into the back of the truck on the freeway. the suspect was killed during an exchange of gunfire. the department of public safety troopers were injured by flying glass. they were treated and released from the hospital. the "wall street journal" reports that the deadly lion air crash is putting the focus on boeing's popular 737 max. the passenger plane crashed into the java sea yesterday shortly after it took off from jakarta. all 189 people on board were killed. the day before, the same plane experienced a similar altitude drop. lion air said maintenance on the plane was completed. former ntsb chair mark rosenker says this is significant. >> clearly the incident that occurred prior to this flight is very important because it may have suggested that whatever maintenance was done was not adequate. >> 219 of boeing's 737 max are in service around the world.

u.s. carriers fly 45 of them. "the guardian" reports three-fourths of venice flooded in an exceptionally high tide. high winds pushed in water from the lagoon causing the water level to rise more than five feet. venice often floods, but monday was the worst flooding the city has seen in ten years. the rest of italy is also dealing with heavy wind and rain. at least six people have died nationwide. and "the hollywood reporter" says megyn kelly and nbc are grappling over money and a nondisclosure clause. sources say she's pushing back against an nda clause. the publication says that her contract is reportedly worth $69 million, and her lawyer is fighting to get all of it. she still has more than a year left on her contract. kelly's show was canceled last week after her blackface comment. and space.com reports a nasa spacecraft just broke the record for getting the closest to the sun.

forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ on the cbs "money watch," google kicks off a competition, and ihop debuts its grinch pancakes. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the u.s. will reportedly impose tariffs on all remaining chinese imports if talks next month between presidents trump and xi jinping fail to ease the trade war. bloomberg says there have been no decisions, but preparations have been made for lists made for tariffs in case talks don't yield progress. the u.s. has imposed tariffs on $250 billion worth of chinese goods. china responded with $110 billion in tariffs on american goods. news that the trump administration could escalate the trade dispute with china

sent the stock market reeling again. the dow tumbled 245 points. it saw wild swings. at one point yesterday, the dow was up 352 points. at another it was down 566. the s&p 500 ultimately fell 17 points, and the nasdaq skidded 116. google says it will give away $25 million to projects that propose ways to use artificial intelligence to help create a more humane society. yesterday's announcement is part of a broader google initiative called a.i. for social good. it aims to ease concerns that a.i. advances pose a danger to society such as eliminating jobs. google says a.i. is already being used to diagnose diseases and help people with disabilities. meantime, apple could be unveiling new ipad and math products at an event in new york today. analysts say one of the updates is expected to be a new ipad pro with speed air processors and new sensors using facial
