>> get chris he is been out there talking to witnesses and parents looking for their children. witnesses describe a dramatic scene. this afternoon we're learning more about the gunman here. officials say his motive is still unclear.>> police with guns drawn surrounded a bar just before midnight. it was the bang bang of gunshots. and started going crazy and people were pushing. we thought it was a joke. >> the gunman shot and on armed security guard at the front your -- front door. he smoke off -- set off the smoke device. he never spoke a word.

mother just six miles from the shooting. neighbors tell us they believe he suffered from ptsd. 20 other people were injured in this ordeal. officials tell us that most, if not all of those injuries are not gunshot related. >> back to you. >> what can you tell us about the military background? for he served one combat tour in afghanistan. he was there seven months. he left the service in 2013. military officials tell us he was a decorated marine. one of the awards he was given was a good conduct medal. how that experience played into this, that will be something that investigators will look at closely. >> i'm sure that will come to light in the upcoming days and weeks. >> thank you.

there is a desperate plea to help the survivors of the shooting. >> we do need blood donations. it has to be coordinated. we are working with areas here in thousand oaks where we can set up a blood bank where people can donate blood. >> a group of survivors from the las vegas mass shooting was at last night's shooting. nicholas champion says he was on the dance floor. he and several others tried to help others escape and tried treating people on the scene. >> we were at the route 91 shooting as were 50 or 60 others that were in the building. unfortunately, this family was hit twice. >> the shooting broke out during line dancing and college night.

a live look in washington dc. the flag at the white house has been lowered to half staff. it will remain at half staff until sunset saturday. nancy pelosi sent us a statement saying the nation awoke to news of a mass shooting of staggering tragedy and heart break. governor jerry brown had this message saying our hearts ache for the victims of this act. our deepest condolences for those who st the newly elected governor addressed the shooting and praised the deputy who gave his life to save others. >> i want to express my deep respect and admiration to the men and women in uniform, law enforcement broadly and this remarkable sergeant for his act of courage and bravery and

heroism. the lives that he has changed. >> the governor elect will serve meals at saint anthony's dining hall. we will have more on this developing story throughout the day. stay with us at kpix.com. breaking news in butte county. this wildfire forces thousands e campfire has burned a 5000 acres in a canyon off of highway 70. it is spreading quickly. the highway is closed there. one witness says heavy ash is falling in chico, 14 miles to the west. there is a smoke advisory for the entire bay area because of this wildfire. firefighters are responding to several spot fires on 680. those fires are now mostly out. it is unclear how they allulfit the scene of a brush fire.

this is in oakland. chopper five is live over highway 30 team. you can see that burned-out area . this fire is mostly out. it is still slowing down traffic in that area. mary joins us with the also look at fire conditions and the dry and windy conditions. >> yes. high fire danger. the air quality with the smoke and the atmosphere here. the first one is a fire burning in butte county. you can see in the imagery the smoke of burning with that campfire. it is clear to see that. who are the butte county camp fire -- we are looking at the butte county campfire. where is the rented direction for us? it is coming out of the northeast. that is why there is an air quality advisory. you will notice that for the upper layers of the app miss here.

smoky skie ghsmelit as well wi that smoke coming from the northeast. we are looking at a red flag warning. critical fire conditions. above 1000 feet is under that warning. though humidity and coming up, i will show you futurecast wind gusts taking you through today and into tomorrow and how strong the wind will become. pge is waiting to find out if they should shut off power across the north bay. these eight counties could be impacted. jackie ward found out that napa county would be spare >> we are standing along lake county highway. there is a generator. if the electric company shuts off power today, this generator will keep city proper up and

running. there still might be a public safety power shot off because of the extreme fire danger. calistoga won't really feel the effect. it is in a unique spot. it is surrounded by a tier 3 fire threat. we wanted to use every tool we had to try to minimize impact to customers who were not in these high fire threat areas. this is a perfect example because of the unique layout and the uniqueness of the city in a high fire threat area. the generator may be considered for other towns to get in the future. there are safety issues that have to be looked into in order for that to happen. 100 30 homes are receiving cancellation notices from pge because this generator does not support homes outside the city

giovanni gaines gave a full confession to officers. police say he admitted to possessing the fight -- device and providing it to a monarch -- minor. back in july the device detonated during a protest injuring the officers. the suspects fled the scene and an investigation was initiated. a murder suss act in a drunk driving crash that killed a baby and her father appeared in court today. we have more on the hearing. not much to the victim -- now, much to the victims dismay, this is been postponed to. hector was killed instantly and camilla died the next week. >> we are all traumatized -- traumatized by this event. >> family members came to court to find outhe defendant
