good morning from the cbs 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. at least 31 people have been killed by devastating wildfires burning in california. three major fires are burning through the state from south to north. the deadliest is the campfire in northern butte county where at least 29 people have died. that matches the deadliest single wildfire in state's history. 228 people remain unaccounted for. and 150,000 remain displaced. fires have burned some 400 square miles across the state and they are propelled by strong winds and dry conditions expected to last the rest of this week. tom hanson is here in new york with more on the devastation. tom, good morning. >> good morning. authorities say with hundreds more still unaccounted for, the death toll may rise. >> just hoping that somehow

they're watch willing -- watching or somebody is watching. >> within minutes of putting out a plea on tv to find his grandfather, his phone blew up. >> just overwhelming joy. >> his grandfather was at a shelter. it's good news in northern california where the still-raging campfire has killed two dozen people. >> two of my friends are still missing, and i'm hoping it ain't one of the body counts. >> search and rescue teams in the town of paradise are working with a mobile dna lab to identify remains. >> we're just going door to door, house to house looking for family's loved ones that are missing. >> this is not the new normal this is the new abnormal. >> governor jerry brown is asking president trump to declare a major disaster to bolster federal aid. he also responded to the president's tweet blaming the deaths on the state arizona forest management. >> managing the forest every way we can does not stop climate change.

and those who deny that are definitely contributing to the tragedies that we're now witnessing. >> welcome to my home in malibu. >> in southern california, the deadly woolsey fire has destroyed dozens of homes, including some in the celebrity community in malibu. gerard butler posted this video and camille grammer wrote on instagram that her home couldn't be saved. officials say it's been more than 200 days since northern california received even a half inch of rain and what could potentially make the fires in the south more widespread, strong santa ana winds which typically gust between 50 and 60 miles per hour and those are expected today and tomorrow. >> that's unfortunate. tom hanson here in new york. thank you so much. in southern california, firefighters battled strong winds in a los angeles neighborhood. flames from the woolsey fire neared several homes yesterday, but firefighters fought back the fire through the smoke and they

were able to save many of those homes. california residents not directly threatened by the flames are seeing and breathing in the efects of the wildfires. the san francisco bay area is under an air quality alert likely to stay in place for days. blankets of smoke hung over the bay. in some areas visibility was limited to just a few yards. residents are advised to reduce outdoor activities and keep doors and windows closed. ahead on "cbs this morning," jamie yuccas reports from southern california on the stress and anxiety residents feel as they deal with evacuations and worry about the fate of their home. president trump is back in washington after a weekend if france to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of world war i. yesterday in paris mr. trump found himself a target of some of the pointed criticism his nationalist policies. weija jiang reports from paris. >> reporter: at the palace in

paris, they commemorated the end of world war i 100 years ago. french president emanuel macron seemed to target president trump who recently declared himself a nationalist. >> translator: patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism. nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism. >> reporter: the president has had a rocky relationship with european allies while warming up to adversaries like president vladimir putin. the two shook hands and had a luncheon. afterwards putin said she spoke but did not have a formal meeting as previously planned. later mr. president trump visited a cemetery where american soldiers are buried. >> the american and french patriots of world war i embody the timeless virtues of our two republics. >> reporter: president trump left for washington where he faces questions about acting attorney general matthew

whitaker. he will oversee the special investigation into russian meddling in the 2016 election. >> if he stays there, he will create a constitutional crisis by inhibiting mueller or firing mueller, so congress has to act. >> reporter: top congressional democrats sent a new letter to the chief essex officer at the department of justice demanding that whitaker remove himself from the probe because he has publicly criticized it. senator lindsey graham says there's no need. >> i don't think he has to recuse himself. i'm confident that mr. mueller will be allowed do his job without interference. >> reporter: democrats and even some republicans are calling for legislation to put restrictions on president trump's ability to fire mueller. but texas senator ted cruz says that would be unconstitutional. weija jiang, paris, france. well, it has been six days since the midterm elections and several key races remain undecided.

the recount in the races for florida's senate and governor got under way over the weekend. it's supposed to be finished by thursday. governor rick scott has filed three lawsuits. meanwhile, georgia's governor race remains up in the air as does a race for a senate seat in arizona. tony dokoupil reports. >> reporter: officials in arizona are counting mail-in ballots in its u.s. senate race. >> thank you so much. >> reporter: where democrat kyrsten sinema opened up a lead over mcsally. democrat stacey abrams in georgia is refusing to concede against republican brian kemp. >> we did not need to sit down and take the trump agenda. >> reporter: democrat harley rouda, a real estate executive declared victory against dana, or ra backer in their house

race. we have not yet projected that race. >> we have boxes of votes just appearing out of nowhere. >> reporter: the trump administration is alleging fraud in florida. state election officials are reassuring voters while ordering machine recounts of the governor's race and the u.s. senate race. senate republicans like the reelected ted cruz are in lockstep. >> anytime you have a recount, you have an invitation for people to -- to violate the law and try to advance their partisan. >> reporter: republican governor rick scott's u.s. senate race is under review and he's accusing his opponent of election fraud. >> senator nelson is clearly trying to commit fraud to try to win this election. that's all this is. >> the senator himself is committing fraud? >> well, it's his team. somehow they came up with 93,000 votes afterwards. how do they -- chris, how do they do it? >> reporter: democrat chuck schumer who oversees federal elections threw cold water on scott's accusation.

>> saying it's going too slowly is one thing, saying you have concerns about how legitimate the count is is another. >> reporter: this brought the biggest midterm gain in the house since 1974. the senate will remay under republican control. tony dokoupil, cbs news, new york. in mississippi, a republican senate candidate is taking heat for her remark about a public hanging. senator hyde smith said she was praising someone when she said if he invited me to a public hanging i'd be in the front row. mississippi has a history of lynchings of black people. her opponent is former congressman mike espy who is black. his campaign called her remarks irreprehensible. former president george w. bush and form are first lady laura bush were awarded the liberty medal for their work with military veterans.

"the new york times" reports a year before the killing of journalist jamal khashoggi saudis close to crown prince mohammed bin salman discussed killing other enemies of the kingdom. the times says saudi intelligence officials asked a small group of businessmen last year about using private companies to assassinate saudi -- iranian enemies. meanwhile, khashoggi's family attended an event in istanbul yesterday. it was to mark the 40th day since he was murder the at the

saudi consulate there. people wore masks depicting khashoggi. australia news reports a strawberry farm supervisor is facing charges of contaminate ing strawberries with needles. prosecutors say she put needles in the fruit in september to retaliate over a workplace grievance. she faces up to ten years in jail. no one was hurt, but it sparked strawberry recalls that devastated the multimillion dollar industry. time reports on a study that suggests fish oil and vitamin "d" supplements may not prevent heart attacks and cancer. the they found fish oil supplements did not lower the risk of cancer or heart problems in generally healthy people. but a prescription-strength fish oil did show promise for people who already had certain heart risks. npr says archeologists in egypt discovered hundreds of mummified cats.

our top story this morning, the recount in florida's senate and governor races began over the weekend. all 67 counties are supposed to complete the tally by thursday. the trump administration alleges fraud. besides the florida races, they are still counting votes in georgia's governor race as well as the senate race in arizona. and president trump was in paris yesterday to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of world war i. mr. trump who calls himself a nationalist listened to the president of france speak on the dangers of nationalist isolation. president emanuel macron warned that ancient demons that caused the war and millions of deaths were once again making headway.

and we reported the northern campfire in california has destroyed more than 6,100 homes making it the most destructive wildfire in the state's history. ileana diaz reports. >> reporter: in northern california, authorities have begun the grim task of identifying victims of the campfire. 23 of them had been recovered by sunday afternoon. some of the dead were found inside their cars suggesting they died while trying to make their escape. and with over 100 people reported missing, officials believe there may be more victims. on sunday, a fifth search and recovery team began working in and around the devastated time of paradise. mobile dna labs are also joining the effort. anthropologists are on hand. in case any skeletal remains are found. >> we're doing everything we can to identify those remains and make contact with the next of kin. >> the northern part of the state isn't the only place with
