to be making a nazi salute. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom here in new york, good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. arizona has its first female united states senator, three-term democratic congresswoman kyrsten sinema won the state's open senate seat following a count that lasted nearly a week after the midterm elections. we have more from this. >> reporter: good morning, the race between kyrsten sinema and republican martha mcsally was highly financed. mcsally led narrowly on election night, but as outstanding votes were counted through the weekend and yesterday, sinema pulled ahead. >> i am so honored that arizonans chose our vision of a better arizona.

>> reporter: sinema takes over the seat vacated by republican jeff flake. she will be arizona's first democratic u.s. senator since dennis deconcini was re-elected in 1998. she attacked mcsally's leadership in the house last year to repeal obamacare. sinema ran as a moderate willing to work with republicans to get things done. >> arizona rejected what has become far too common in our country -- name-calling, petty personal attacks, and doing and saying whatever it takes just to get elected. >> reporter: the senate race cost more than $90 million, including more than $58 million pumped in from outside groups, according to the federal election commission. mcsally, the first female air force pilot to fly in combat, was elected to congress in 2014. she congratulated sinema on a hard-fight battle. >> i am convinced arizona is the best state in the country, and our best days are still yet to come. and i'm going to continue to pray for our success.

>> reporter: sinema started her career as a social worker and political activist. during her time in congress she developed a reputation for she voted for bills backed by president trump 60% of the time. sinema participates win gives democrats their -- sinema's win gives democrats their second win in the election. the democrats will hold 47 seats. depending on what happens in florida recount and a runoff in mississippi. ain't anne-marie? >> tom hanson here in new york. thank you very much. on to those wildfires in california. at least 42 people have been killed by a wildfire that obliterated a town in northern california. the so-called camp fire is now the deadliest in state history. one nearby resident says the day before the fire started she got an e-mail from the utility company telling her its power lines were sparking. wildfires are burning on both ends of the state. statewide, the death toll is at least 44. near los angeles, the woolsey fire destroyed at least 435

buildings. chris martinez is in calabasas, california, where many homes were lost. chris, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. this morning fire crews are busy reinforcing some of the containment lines that they've built around this fire over the past couple of days. it looks as though they are finally starting to get a bit of a better handle on this. and officials are also getting a better sense of exactly how destructive and deadly these fires are. the search for the missing continues in northern california. >> we're now at a point where we're going to bring in human remains, detector dogs, or what often are referred to as cadaver dogs. >> reporter: some residents haven't been heard from since flames tore through paradise on thursday. >> we've got so many people missing, our neighbors -- our neighbors are gone. >> reporter: reggie elizabeth graywolf lived here at a mobile home park that's now destroyed. many of her neighbors are

elderly and disabled. >> hazel's 99 years old. she's still missing. >> reporter: the camp fire is the deadliest and most destructive in california's history. donations have poured in, but places to stay are hard to find. >> hard sleeping in our cars because there's nowhere to go. >> 30,000 to 50,000 people up there. we all have to go someplace. >> reporter: here in southern california, hundreds of homes have been destroyed by the woolsey fire. high santa ana winds are complicating efforts to battle the blaze. >> we're still in red-flag weather right now. we're expecting up to 40 mile-per-hour winds through tuesday. >> reporter: two other fires broke out west of los angeles yesterday when the winds picked up. firefighters from other parts of the country are coming in to help. >> we haven't seen stuff like this in texas. but we're sending the best of the best. >> reporter: president trump approved a major disaster declaration to help with the recovery effort. now here in southern california,

officials are continuing to lift the mandatory evacuations bit by bit in los angeles and ventura counties. still, many thousands of people here and up north remain out of their homes this morning. for some of them it will likely be days before they can come back. anne-marie, back to you. >> the fires keep raging. thank you, chris. ahead on "cbs this morning," so-called wildfire scouts. jamie yuccas shows a group of fence working to fight the fires with one monitoring the fires from atop a mountain. an associate of roger stone, jerome corsie, says that he expeto be arged he special sel'. stis a r lgtime iddonald trump.l stone associates questioned by the mueller investigation. mueller and his team want to know about stone's connection with wikileaks. u.s. intelligence agencies conclude that russian agents were the source of hacked material released by wikileaks.

mueller wants to know if stone or others had advanced notice. now that the democrats control the house it appears they are preparing their own set of investigations. if his tweets are any indication, president trump is looking ahead. >> reporter: on twitter, president trump warned of the prospect of presidential harassment by the dems. harassment is what republicans have labeled possible democratic investigations of the executive branch once the party assumes control of the house in january. in an interview with axios, new york democrat nita lowey, set to chair the powerful appropriations committee, checked off a laundry list of potential areas for inquiries. >> the travel ban? >> yes. >> the family separation policy? >> absolutely. >> hurricane relief in puerto rico? >> oh, it was absolutely >> reporter: add to that dozens of topics including campaign-era payments to women who allege

affairs with mr. trump, russian involvement in the election, and the appointment of acting attorney general matt whitaker who democrats already accuse of bias against the special counsel investigation. california's adam schiff will lead the house intelligence committee. >> mr. whitaker needs to understand that he will be called to answer and any role he plays will be exposed to the public. >> reporter: house democratic -- democratic leader nancy pelosi, likely to be the next speaker, told "face the nation" democrats will be strategic. >> we are not scattered shot. we are not doing any investigations for a political purpose but to seek the truth. >> reporter: last week the president said democratic investigations could backfire. >> we can investigate. they look at us, we look at them. it goes on for two years. at the end of two years, nothing's done. >> reporter: in that same press conference, the president said a spate of democratic investigations would trigger a warlike white house posture.
