good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be would you. i'm anne-marie green. 50 deaths are blamed on wildfires in california. 48 killed by the campfire, the most flames pushed by strong winds moved near a major freeway and reds dent chal areas. moved to a major area. the campfire destroyed search crews continue to look for victims. the exact number of missing is unclear. last year statewide some 225,000 acres burned. tom hanson is here in new york with more. >> good morning. firefighters are slowly making

progress battling these flames, meanwhile, in some of the hardest hit areas, people are trickling back in to see what's left of their homes. search and rescue teams in northern california are sifting through the charred town of paradise. >> if there is any matter still icadaver ther than burnt bones, dogs and have a rapid dna system to quickly identify victims. butte county sheriff says residents will face a grim reality after they return home. vee seed an area, once people get back in there it's possible that human remains could be found. >> it's unclear how many people are missing. chardonnay has not heard from her father. she found his home burned to ashes. >> my dad's a survivr. he's been through war and so many things and there's a possibility he could have made it through this. >> five hundred miles south,

firefighters have made progress battling the woolsey fire. some neighborhoods were reopened and residents were able to see if their home survived. >> we can have thanksgiving here. >> others not as fortunate. >> i didn't expect to see this. didn't expect it to be gone. >> and as ventura fire chief noted. >> we are not out of the woods yet. >> they don't believe they will have the woolsey fire fully contained until sunday. >> just heartbreaking. in the coming days, rain is expected in the forecast for some areas which may bring relief, but it also presents another risk, mudslides. >> they cannot get a break. thank you so much, tom. now to washington where president trump is considering a staff shake-up that could include chief of staff john kelly. the first lady has made it clear that she wants the national security adviser fired and the head of homeland security may d ashe dett. >> reporter: at a ceremony

more than $2 billion in tax incentives that some view as corporate welfare. others are concerned about the impact on housing prices, public transportation and schools. amazon says it will create 25,000 high-paying jobs in each location. >> we need a lot of tech employees, software developers, computer scientists, engineers, and both cities have available talent locally. >> amazon says the average salary for the new jobs it plans to create will be $150,000. the eastern part of the united states is in line to get hit with the first wintery weather of the season this week. a large storm system threatens to bring a mix of snow and ice from the mississippi valley to new england. power outages are possible. up to 8 inches of snow could fall in missouri and southern illinois. most areas will see an inch or two of accumulation. up next, homemade bomb investigation.

authorities call mother of satan bombs. officials say that they were made of the same chemicals terrorists use to make bombs. >> fire in the hole. fire in the hole. >> a tip led police to a home in lake helen where they found explosive material. they detonated it in a nearby field yesterday. 37-year-old jared coburn says he was using the materials to make homemade fireworks. "the new york times" reports cnn is suing the trump administration to try to reinstate the press pass of white house correspondent jim acosta. they revoked his credentials last week after his questions angered president trump during a news conference. acosta at firs mon an in ied to take it away. cnn claims the white house violated acosta's first amendment right to report on the government. the white house says it's more grandstanding from cnn. a hearing is scheduled for this afternoon. the columbus dispatch

reports four members from one family were arrested for the execution-style murders of eight people from another family in rural ohio. prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty against a husband and wife and their two adult sons. eight members of the rodon family were shot to death in 2016. they say the custody of a child played a role and that child was not hurt. hate crimes rose 17% last year. anti-semitic crimes increased by 37%. law enforcement agencies reported more than 7,100 eight crimes occurred in 2017. overall, 80% were based on race or religion. 16% on sexual orientation. but the number of hate crimes across the country could actually be even higher. >> we know that there's historic underreporting. we know there are over 90 cities across the united states that have populations of a hundred thousand people or more that

our top story this morning. overnight a new wildfire broke out in california. this one in san bernardino county east of los angeles. wind blew the flames near a major highway and residential areas. so far no evacuations have been ordered. to the north, the death toll from the campfire has risen to at least 48. search and rescue teams are looking through what's left of the town of paradise. it's unclear how many people are missing. about 7,600 homes were destroyed. the fire is 35% contained. to the south, the so-called woolsey fire as burned nearly 100,000 acres and its 40% contained. and cbs has learned president trump plans to remove >> kirstjen nielsen of white house security.
