what i'm saying? it's not even like that. i just feel like i have to protect what's mine. >> rock on, mili. that is the news this t it's thursday, november 15th, 2018. this is the "cbs morning news." wintery blasts. tens of millions of people in the path of a weather system bringing rain, sleet, and snow. when it will strike. in california, the death toll rises as massive wildfires burn out of control. and now there's a new threat. and stormy daniels' attorney is coming to his own defense after being arrested.

good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning, an early winter storm is making its way up to the northeast. a mix of snow, ice, rain, and strong wind is in the forecast through tomorrow. the weather system already blanketed parts of the south. in mississippi, a tour bus headed to a casino overturned. two passengers were killed. witnesses say the driver lost control after the bus crossed an icy overpass. tom hanson is here in new york with more on the weather. and when it's expected to hit later today. >> i hope you're ready because that frigid cold air is on its way and those icy roads are certainly no joke. as you said, the storm is already being blamed for two deaths from that bus crash. a trip to a mississippi casino turned deadly wednesday when an alabama tour bus overturned on an icy highway.

veronica love was one of dozens injured in the crash. they say the sleet and snow in the region played a roll. >> all of a sudden the bus started swerving. it wrapped around two times, hit the rail and then flipped over. i can't speculate on what this driver was doing, i'm just thankful that i'm alive. >> the wintry mix also hit other parts of the southeast and lower midwest, including missouri, lu, and arkansas. >> there's a gee whiz, wow factor with it and of course everyone has to learn how to drive again in snow. >> as the storm moves north, some are calling this a good dress rehearsal for worse weather to come. >> you see mixed rain coming like this, it makes you be aware and just make sure everybody's in place. >> others are just enjoying the early winter. >> i don't ever recall having snow in november before thanksgiving.

it's pretty, though. makes you get ready for the holidays. >> down in the florida panhandle, officials opened a shelter for people still displaced by hurricane michael who are concerned about staying warm. >> now, the 85 million people in the storm's path and at the very least we could be in for some major travel delays. anne-marie. >> that's for sure. tom hanson here in new york. thanks a lot, tom. winter storm warnings are posted from arkansas to vermont. some interior sections could see up to 10 inches of snow. that's according to national weather service. kate buy low of our affiliate station kyw has the details. >> it's not even thanksgiving yet but a winter storm is pushing up the eastern seaboard. this thing has a ton of moisture. it's drawing in from the south and it's running into a lot of cold air. subfreezing temperatures through much of the northeast. about 9:00 a.m. we see snow in

d.c., baltimore, and then just in time for the evening rush we see this coastal component take over around new york city producing snow from new york to boston. rain along the coast, and this with will last with heavy snow inland across new england right through friday morning. and the winds will howl behind this system as well. we've got a winter storm warning across interior sections of pennsylvania, down into portions of west virginia and virginia. winter storm watches for much of new england and winter weather advisories in the major coastal cities of the northeast. as far as timing is concerned, for the morning rush, d.c. and baltimore most impacted. mid to late morning is when snow will break out around philadelphia, but it's the evening rush in new york city that may be impacted bia i mix of snow and sleet, heavy rain in philadelphia at 4:00 p.m. thursday. this then lifts through new england. boston gets in on some heavy

snow by 10:00 thursday night before a change over to rain. so just how much snow are we talking here? the heaviest will be throughout the axis of the highest elevations across portions of interior pennsylvania and new york where some spots could see up to 10 inches. philadelphia and new york about a coating of an inch or two. mast of that will be washed away by the rain because the eastern seaboard. wind gusts could be up to 45 to 50 miles per hour and we could see some snow in the poconos which could lead to power out ages. this is looking like a mess for thursday and into friday morning. out west, more high winds are expected. hampering efforts to fight deadly california fires. the death toll has risen to 56. statewide, 59 people have been killed. and 130 people are still missing, many are senior citizens. the town of paradise was

completely destroyed by flames, including 8,800 homes. chris martinez reports. >> reporter: street after street in paradise, california, there are only shells of cars and nearly empty lots where homes once stood. family and friends of the missing are posting on social media hoping somehow they were able to escape, but answers are coming slowly. >> we want to conduct as thorough a search as we can but we want to do it in an expedited manner as possible so we can repopulate those areas. >> ryan zinke and california's governor toured the area. zinke says devastating wildfires are the new normal. >> the fire season has gotten longer, the temperatures have gotten hotter, the amount of material, the dead and dying timber is elevated. have not yet determined what started the fire, about two dozen victims have filed suit against pacific gas and electric

company for allegedly failing to maintain its power lines. >> the evidence is quite clear that this fire was caused by a pg&e transmission line and they need to be held accountable. >> reporter: here in southern california, people who evacuated from the woolsey fire are returning home. they believe it destroyed nearly 500 homes. tyler turquand was able to save his house, but there was some tense movements. >> i jumped down off this roof screaming at my wife we had a 30-second window to get out of here. >> reporter: and now there's another threat, rain in the forecast which could bring mudslides. chris martinez, cbs news. attorney michael avenatti, the lawyer for porn actress stormy daniels who sued president trump says the charges of domestic violence is completely bogus. he was booked in los angeles and released on $50,000 bail yesterday. a police spokesman says the unidentified alleged victim had visible injuries.

avenatti said he has never struck a woman. last night he tweeted, i have at are always been an advocate ofwomen's rights and equality and i always will be. i will not be intimidated into stopping my pursuit of justice and what is right. president tump says he's supporting a major rewrite of the criminal justice sentencing laws. the bipartisan first act -- first step act would be the biggest overhaul in a generation. it would give judges more discretion when sentencing nonviolent offenders, particularly for drug offenses. the house approved a prison reform bill in may but the proposed senate bill is different and the two bills would have to be reconciled. mira ricardel is leaving the white house. as we reported, first lady melania trump in a highly unusual move called for ricardel to be dismissed. she and the first lady's staff clashed over mrs. trump's visit to africa last month. the white house what's ricardel will have a new role in the administration.

grilling from members of parliament today over a draft brexit agreement. may won the backing of her cabinet yesterday after a five-hour debate about the deal separating the uk from the europe onunion. several ministers spoke out against the draft agreement. she's also facing opposition from within her conservative party and the opposition party, the labor party. the united kingdom is set to withdraw from the eu in march. the baltimore sun reports the u.s. conference of catholic bishops says it will return to baltimore in june after it failed to take action on the sex abuse scandal. about 300 bishops met in baltimore this week where they plan to vote on whether to further crack down on sex abuse. but pope francis ordered them to delay the vote until a meeting of church leaders in february. some bishops expressed frustration over the inaction. and "the new york times" says retired dallas cowboy linebacker jeff rohrer is getting married to his same-sex partner. rohrer who is 59 is the first

powell said low unemployment and strong growth put the u.s. economy in a good place right now but powell warned of potential risks ahead such as a slow down of global growth, the impact of tax cuts and the rate of interest rate hikes. powell said nothing to indicate the fed will not go through with an expected rate hike next month. and he said political criticism will not affect the fed's policies. president trump has called the fed's rate hikes his biggest threat. powell spoke at the federal reserve bank in dallas yesterday. it was another down day on wall street yesterday. stocks were dragged down by losses in tech companies, banks, and insurers. the dow fell 206 points, s&p lost 20, and the nasdaq dropped 64. losses for uber increased by $177 million during the third quarter. all told, the ride hailing company lost more than a billion dollars from july to september but their ridership and revenue have been growing and they still plan to go ahead with the public offering next year.

the u.s. postal service lost money for the 12 year in a row. the postal service reported a lots of $3.9 billion for the budget year that ended september 30th. it blames the decline in mail volume and pension and healthcare costs. first class mail volume fell by 2.1 billion pieces. president trump has ordered a report to address what he calls the postal service's unsustainable financial path. and jean maker levi strauss is planning a public offering next year. they are credited with making the first pair of jeans. they hope to raise between $600 and $800 million. this wouldn't be its first rodeo. levi's last public offering was in 1971 when the company was taken private shortly thereafter. anne-marie. >> diane king hall at the new york stock exchange. thank you so much. have a good weekend. oh, wait, because i'm not going to be here tomorrow, that's why i said that. >> that's all right. i take it early. thank you.

our stor our top story this morning. an early winter storm is expected to bring snow, ice, rain, and wind to an area from the west all the way to the northeast. as the storm pushes up the east coast, it's drawing moisture from the south. stormy weather has already hit the south where a tourist bus overturned on an icy road in mississippi. two people were killed in that accident. and the death toll from the campfire in northern california is at least 56. at least 130 people are still missing. the national guard has been brought in to help search for bodies. officials say it will take years to rebuild the town of paradise. at least three others were

killed by wildfires in southern california. new details have been released about a deadly accident on a southwest airlines plane in april. a passenger was killed after nearly being pulled out of a window. kris van cleave has more. >> reporter: is your airplane physically on fire? >> no, it's not on fire but part of it's missing. >> it was metal fatigue that caused a fan blade to break at about 30,000 feet last april. within three seconds, investigators believe the engine blew and shrapnel burst out a window in the cabin killing the passenger. new testimony just released by the national transportation safety board said people rushed to help her after they saw her with her seatbelt still fastened, her head, torso and arm hanging out of the broken window. one passenger reached outside the plane to help pull her back in. her husband talked to us days after the accident. >> if you could talk to her today what would you tell her? >> i love you.

i had no idea how i can do this without her, but because of her i know i can. >> the engine maker told the ntsb during the hearing the failed blade had made about 32,000 flights and was last inspected for fatigue in 2012. an examination of that blade after the deadly accident found signs it was likely beginning to suffer cracks from metal fatigue back in 2012, but those cracks were smaller than what the tests at the time could detect. another southwest 737 had an eerily similar failure in 2016 that prompted some additional inspections. since april, faa orders have cut in half the number of flights btween fan blade inspections. southwest says it began fatigue inspections in 2017 but there was no basis at the time to prioritize the engines on flight 1380 over others so they were still in the queue to be checked. kris van cleave, cbs news, washington. coming up on "cbs this morning," we talk with republican california
