taking to protect themselves from this toxic air. >> this gives us a birds eye view of the devastation in what is left of the town of paradise. through the smoke you can see building after building reduced to rubble. there are burned-out cars and charred homes. the death: -- toll continues to rise. 218 square miles has been burned. that is about the size of san francisco, oakland and fremont combined. it is 40% contained. this is a live look outside. you can see the hazy sky. the smoke from the camp fire continues to fill the bay area. i just got off the phone

with the quality management district. they are extending the spare the air alert through next tuesday. 13 days in a row. that has never happened before. that is a new record for us. you can see why. this is a live look. the smoky conditions are out there. and an air quality condition is currently unhealthy for all of us across the bay area. santa rosa has moderate air quality. it is a little bit better there. because of that, today is the eighth day in the wrote that there has been an air quality advisory. that has been extended until next tuesday. likely it will be smoky through the weekend and into the beginning of next week. rain chances, around thanksgiving. we're crossing our fingers for that. the bread indicates that smoke. we will time this out through

futurecast the change in wind direction and a chance for rain will be coming up. take a look at this live look from our tower camera. the air is so out -- bad out there that colleges and universities are closed. cal state east bay and sf state are closed. that's just a few of them. we are in hayward. >> reporter: waited days 7 of terrible air quality around the bay area. these masks are in high demand. >> i got up and the air was so bad. >> i am trying to get something to protect my lungs.>> reporter: particle filtering masks have been selling as quickly as they come in. >> initially, there was no problem getting them. as of this morning, they were going quickly. we happened to grab the last truck out.

>> reporter: they are only selling two masks per customer. >> that is all we had. i wish we had access to thousands more. >> reporter: you should change your mask as there -- after eight hours. >> the filter will stay effective at least for 8 hours according to the centers for disease control and prevention. the manufacturers won't put a time limit on it, probably for legal reasons. >> these are based on people with health problems. as for the long-term effects of the smoke? >> i don't think anybody knows the answer to that question. >> reporter: these people are not taking any chances. they are paying 399 each. amazon has these for only 150. they are out of stock until next wednesday. this that tech is going to chico to help today. i am hoping to get some masks so we don't breathe in the toxic fumes. we are just doing what we can.>> reporter: the best

some people are camping in a walmart parking lot because shelters are so overwhelms. people have set up shop. they are -- they have a home away from home after evacuating. they have campers, tents. many of them say they had no idea what was coming when they evacuated last thursday. >> they are survivors. >> jim survived vietnam, a cancer scare and now the fire. >> i walked out and saw a red glow. they told us to get out. we threw stuff in the truck and got out. >> reporter: close friends and family have lost their homes. i think ours is still standing. everything burned around the fence but the house is still standing.>> --

>> reporter: they say humor has made a difference. >> it helps your soul. >> reporter: it has been difficult for these people. they have forged friendships to help them get through this. back to you. >> we have just learned that 21 fire survivors staying in a shelter at the church and have contracted the neural virus. now to the other big fire, thousands of work crews are in los angeles gathering at base camp for the woolsey fire. governor brown and ryan think he surveyed the damage. they say there is no silver bullet for these fires. >> the tree density has been great. the fuel load. the solution is working together. >> we have to manage the forest better and build cities martyr. we will have to build shelter

so that people can escape when these fires get out of hand. we have to deal with climate change. >> in los angeles and ventura county the woolsey fire has claimed the lives of 3 people. 500 buildings, mostly homes have been destroyed. 98,000 acres have burned. it is 57% contained. this boat caught fire in fairfield this morning. this was just before 10 am on clay street. the house behind it and the black truck also caught fire. the flames were out within minutes but the boat is a total loss. the fire was caused by a mechanical failure after maintenance was done on the boat. no injuries were reported. artists are creating a second transit bay. this is going to have a train directly under the golden gate

bridge. this is a glimpse of what it is set to look like. this could ease traffic getting to and from the north bay. now there is talk of possibly 24-hour service. right now the board of directors is expected to be going over the details of this project. wilson walker is at that meeting and we will have more on their discussion tonight at 5 pm and 6 pm. the fbi is re-creating fake heads. heads were used in the most famous prison escape in history. check it out. authorities say inmates placed these decoy heads in their cell beds while they worked on their underground tunnel. that is the tunnel they used to escape. they were made out of soap, concrete dust, paint and bits

agriculture to identify brands of turkey involved in a salmonella outbreak. here is more from new york. >> reporter: in the past year hundreds of cases of salmonella has been linked to roll turkey products. 164 illnesses in 35 states including a death in california. about half of those sickened have been hospitalized. >> most people get sick between 12 and 72 hours after coming into contact with the bacteria. most people will get diarrhea, abdominal cramps and a fever. >> reporter: this is been detected in ground ticket -- ground turkey and live turkeys. the bacteria the -- is widespread.

experts are reminding everyone to be careful while handling roll turkey in the kitchen. that begins by thawing in the refrigerator, not on the counter. >> we want to make sure that people are washing their hands after handling roll turkey, making sure they are cooking turkey to an internal temperature of 165 degrees. if you do that, this strain of salmonella should die.>> that goes for leftovers. they should be reheated to 165. children under five, the elderly and those with weakened immune system could suffer more illnesses from contaminated food. grabbers are starting to work. they can get some dungeness crab. that sounds good. >> let's see how the stock market is doing, the dow is up 184 point. ford teams up with

lately. >> that's right. it is fitting as we are looking at unhealthy air that continues for us. mind the we are looking at unhealthy air through the weekend. i know we were hoping for better air quality for the weekend, that is not the case. current air-quality weightings are unhealthy. a value of 188 in san francisco. 183 in san jose. for santa rosa, moderate. a little bit better across the north bay. a lot of us are still dealing with that smoke. the air-quality advisory and spare the alert -- is in effect and unhealthy for the entire bay area. it looks worse for portions of the east bay. let's show you how bad it is. this is the sales force camera. you can see how smoking it is out there. we are looking at temperatures in the 50s and in the 60s right now. 59 in concord and livermore is

60. 62 for santa rosa. here's what you can expect in the weather headlines. the eighth day in a row today of a spare the air alert. we stay smoking through the weekend. we are looking at rain chances next week. we definitely needed. high pressure is still there. it is weakened a little bit but it is the dominant weather feature. we were hoping this area of low pressure would bring on shore winds for the weekend and help to clear out some of that smoke. that will not be the case. the low will be further away from us and it will not impact their weekend weather. when does it get better? next week the wind direction changes. better air quality by next tuesday. as we go through thanksgiving, the chance to see some rain.

the weather model is kind of split on this. we are really hoping. we need that rain. daytime highs today in the smoke and haze will be in the 60s and 70s for many spots for the rest the afternoon. hazy and smoky through the weekend. looking at monday and likely on tuesday, we are hoping for rain around thanksgiving. we will see about that. fingers crossed. >> all right. thank you. >> the airline's dirty little secret. a faulty design can cause pers -- poisonous fumes to enter the cabin. passengers are left in the dark. >> i was shocked. i could not believe it. there was nothing to prevent that. toxic plane air tonight at 11 on kpix 5.

site. they dig out a mattress and even a refrigerator. he cleans up three to four times a week. he does his hours at a time. >> i have hold off 27,000 pounds since 1 january. >> one problem spot is under the first street bridge. you don't have to go far to find garbage.>> reporter: this inspired his volunteer efforts. he brought his family here to swim. there was trash everywhere. i said wait a minute, this is not fun. i grabbed a garbage bag and started picking it up. >> reporter: he walked along the river alone. from gardens and cans to couches, he would haul the waste to the landfill and he paid the disposal fees which is $10 per tire and $40 for appliances. >> we use the water, the plants use the water, the animals use
