for lots of company. it's going to be the busiest season in years. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. good to be with. i'm anne-marie green. this morning at least six people are dead following a string of deadly shootings. deadly gunfire erupted at a hospital in chicago, a catholic supply shop in a st. louis suburb, and a shooting in downtown denver. a shooting began at the mercy hospital in the parking lot. laura podesta is here in new york with the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it took several minutes to subdue the gunman at that hospital yesterday. when it was all over, four people were dead including a police officer and the gunman, 32-year-old juan lopez. it's unclear if lopez took his own life or was killed by

responding officers. >> outside of mercy hospital. a guy fired. >> reporter: a gunman opened fire at chicago's mercy hospital yesterday afternoon killing two employees and a police officer. >> it was like pow, pow, pow. pow, pow, pow. pow, pow, pow, pow, pow. it was extremely loud and close. >> reporter: the shooter and his ex-fiancee, dr. tamara o'neal, were arguing in the parking lot when he shot and killed her. when officers arrived, he ran into the hospital where they exchanged gunfire. >> when they pulled up, they heard the gunshots, and they did what the heroic officers always do, they ran toward the gunfire. >> reporter: officer samuel jimenez, a 28-year-old father of three, was fatally struck. an ambulance carried his body in a procession through the streets of chicago as police cars flashed their lights. >> this tears at the soul of our city. it is the face and consequence

of evil. >> reporter: dr. patrick connor worked with o'neal, a 38-year-old emergency room physician. >> simply one of the most fascinating, hard-working persons. the best person ever, really. >> reporter: also killed, 25-year-old dayna less, a first-year pharmaceutical resident. hospital officials say a recent active shooter drill helped save lives. and we're told those active shooter drills were completed less than two weeks ago on november 8th. about two hours after the shooting yesterday, s.w.a.t. teams were still evacuating people hiding in the hospital. >> terrible, laura podesta here in new york. thanks a lot, laura. in suburban st. louis this morning, police are searching for a gunman who they say sexually assaulted at least one woman in a religious supply store and shot a woman in the head. she later died at a hospital. the store's located on a busy street, making it easier for the suspect to get away.

police don't have a motive and say that the shooting victim did not know the suspect. the suspect is considered armed and dangerous. one person was killed and four wounded when gunfire erupted in downtown denver. police don't know what triggered the violence. there have been no arrests so far, and it's unclear if there was more than one shooter. the shooting broke out on the street near where new apartments have been built. one witness told "the denver post" he saw a man fire into a group of people and someone fired back. the nation's deadliest wildfire in more than 100 years is blamed on taking the lives of at least 79 people. the so-called camp fire in northern california has burned over 151,000 acres and is 70% contained. more than 11,000 homes have been destroyed, and nearly 700 people are listed as missing. this morning search crews are racing against the weather to find as many victims as they can. >> reporter: crews are scouring this scorched landscape to

recover dna and identify the dead before the rain moves in. >> it's heavily ash and soot. and when the water turns, you know, touches that, it kind of turns to sediment. anything that we have or potentially have, you know, is going to be further buried and entombed by that. >> reporter: search teams are trying to find bathtubs or mattresses, likely places people would take cover when the fire left them no way to escape. with more than 40,000 people forced to flee the camp fire, there are people still unaccounted for. could that list be inflated? >> that list is subject to fluctuation, both up or down, as new information and data comes in. >> reporter: that's because the sheriff says there are duplicate names on the list. people who don't know they're on it, and reunions that haven't been reported. as investigators dig into the cause of the camp fire, pacific gas and electric has confirmed it had two power line failures the day the fire ignited. in a statement, the utility says

in determining a public safety power shutoff, it considers multiple factors including strong winds, very low humidity levels, and critically dry vegetation. the forecasted conditions didn't meet the criteria. back here at the recovery effort, devastating news for 30-year-old chardonnay telly. last week, cbs news was with her as she tried to locate her father, richard brown. she had not heard from him since the fire struck. >> been through war and so many things. & -- and there's a possibility that he could have made it trough. >> reporter: the remains of chardonnay's dad have been found and identified. she says she doesn't think her father made it very far from home. nearly everyone in this area has this was a neighborhood that burned to the ground. fema told us they are working to secure long-term housing for the thousands of people who lost their homes, but it's highly

unlikely that trailers will arrive here before thanksgiving. meg oliver, cbs news, paradise, california. lonnie quinn, the chief weathercaster at our new york station, wcbs, is following a blast of bitter thanksgiving cold headed to the northeast and the rain that will bring both relief and problems to the west. >> we needed the rain before, we're not going to get it before wednesday. the problem is this is a lot of rain. you're looking at some areas, wherever you see the areas shaded in red, you're talking about picking up the potential of five inches of rain. you have fire-scarred land, you put five inches of rain on top of it, mudslides are a big problem. that's the situation out west. if you look at what's going on on the east coast, we have a front coming through. it's going to bring in some really cold air. it's going to be the coldest feeling air of the season. this is thanksgiving morning. new york city's 22 degrees. hartford at 17. 14 in boston. 5 in bangor. 10 in albany. 10 in binghamton. you've got pretty good winds behind the front. new york city where it's 22

degrees with 30 mile-per-hour gusts, the 22 feels like 6 degrees or maybe 10 degrees at best. and new york city's also the home of the thanksgiving day parade. if you get 34 mile-per-hour winds, the balloons do not fly. >> that was lonnie quinn reporting. thanksgiving is the day after tomorrow, and more than 54 million americans plan to travel more than 50 miles away from home, according to aaa. that's an increase of nearly 5% over last year and the most since 2005. the vast majority, an estimated 48.5 million people, will hit the roadways. the largest growth in holiday travel is by air with 4.2 million flyers. trains, buses, and cruise ships account for the rest. aaa says higher wages and more disposable income are prompting the holiday travel. gas this thanksgiving will actually cost you more than four years.

learns his punishment. those are some of the stories on the "morning newsstand." christopher watts was sentenced to life in prison without parole for murdering his wife and two young daughters. during an emotional hearing, prosecutors said watts wanted a fresh start with his new girlfriend. high strangled his wife, carrying their unborn son, and suffocated his daughters, ages 4 and 3. authorities say that he disposed of their bodies at the oil field where he worked. >> he buried shanann and nico in a shallow grave away from the oil tanks. bella and celeste were thrown away at the tanks at this facility. different tanks so they wouldn't be together in death. >> watts did not speak at the hearing. he pleaded guilty in a deal to keep him from facing the death penalty. "the albany times union" reports the first lawsuit was filed after a limo crash that

killed 20 people. the parents of amanda rivenburg said the operators of prestige limousine kept the car on the road after it failed inspections for braking problems and other issues. the lawsuit also claims a windshield sticker claiming the vehicle was taken out of service was removed before the accident. "the new york times" reports 16 rebel democrats released a letter vowing to oppose congresswoman nancy pelosi from becoming speaker of the house again. they say the time has come for new leadership. the letter includes the names of five freshmen. pelosi, who held the post from 2007 to 2011, says that she has the backing to become the speaker again. the letter does not include a handful of democrats who have made it clear they won't vote for pelosi. the "washington post" says ivanka trump used a personal account to send hundreds of emails about government business last year. the emails were reprtedly sent to white house aides, cabinet members, and her assistants. many of them were in violation

of federal records rules. a spokesman for ivanka trump's lawyer acknowledged that she occasionally used her private e-mail before she was briefed on the rules. he said that none of the messages contained classified information. during the presidential campaign, mr. trump attacked hillary clinton for using a personal e-mail account as secretary of state saying that she should be locked up. and "forbes" reports a startup company's mobile robot will hold your parking space for you at the mall. miami-based mypark deploys robot blockers who hold spaces for customers willing to pay for it. the system costs between $1 and $3 for the first two hours, with additional charges per hour after that. mypark is already in five states and puerto rico. still to come, ground beef recall. safety concerns over thousands of pounds of beef from the largest processor. the nation's largest beef processor, jbs usa, recalled nearly 100,000 pounds of ground beef due to possible e. coli contamination. the problem was discovered last week at the swift facility in utah. the beef was shipped to five states -- california, nevada, oregon, utah, and washington. the bulk ground beef was produced on october 24th. included are bulk pallets of swift ground beef and four packets of ground beef. nearly 400 pounds were recalled in early october. layoffs may be looming at general motors after too few employees signed up for a buyout. according to the "detroit free press," gm hopes at least 7,000 white-collar workers would have signed up by yesterday, but the number was closer to 4,000, leave something 3,000 employees vulnerable. an update on a story we told you about yesterday. the fast food chain chipotle has

it's beginning to look a lot like christmas around the white house. a horse-drawn carriage brought the white house christmas tree to its new home yesterday. president trump and the first lady, melania, were on hand. the 19.5-foot frasier fir was cut from a north carolina farm. and it wasn't just horses making their way to the white house. turkeys were there, too. the two turkeys that will be pardoned by president trump today were introduced. the birds are named peas and carrots and made the trip from a south dakota farm for the annual ceremony. they're staying in a suite at a fancy washington hotel tonight. after the ceremony, they'll live out their days at virginia tech university. coming up on "cbs this morniselayed or

our top stories, three people were killed when a gunman opened fire at a chicago hospital. a doctor, a pharmaceutical assistant, and a police officer were killed. the gunman also died. it's unclear if he took his own life or if he was killed by police. the attack began as an apparent domestic dispute in the parking lot of mercy hospital on chicago's south side. and fire officials say the wildfire burning in northern california is now responsible for atst 79 aths. nearly 700 people are still missing, and more than 11,000 homes have been destroyed. rescue crews are racing to find more victims before tomorrow when rain is forecast. last night, a federal judge

in san francisco barred the trump administration from refusing asylum to immigrants who crossed the southern border illegally. this as a new migrant group is expected to depart today for the united states. they're gathered in the northern mexican city of mexicali and plan to go to tijuana, mexico. that's where thousands of people from another caravan have already arrived. ileana diaz has more. >> reporter: angry protesters scuffled with police at a shelter where central american migrants are staying in mexico. tensions have been building in tijuana as nearly 3,000 people from a caravan poured into the city. demonstrators carried banners reading "no to the invasion" and "mexico first." this protester fears because of the migrants president trump will close the borders, making it hard for mexicans who have to cross daily for work. tijuana's northbound border was, in fact, temporarily closed to cars and pedestrians monday morning as the department of

homeland security fortified the border. president trump tweeted a picture of a new fence on the beach and said, "no climbers anymore." the department of homeland security believes most people in the caravan will not qualify for asylum based on new policies by the trump administration that preclude victims of domestic abuse and gang violence from qualifying. in a federal court in washington, d.c., the american civil liberties union argued the policy is inconsistent with international law and needs to be struck down. now migrants must present themselves at a port of entry, so they do, by the thousands, and wait sometimes for weeks for their case to be heard. ileana diaz, cbs news, los angeles. coming up on "cbs this morning," john dickerson talks with louisiana senator john kennedy and follows along as he takes his lessons on government to an unusual place. reducing the carbon footprints of unwanted clothing. designer eileen fisher takes us

50 degrees to starts. it's tuesday november 20th and i'm kenny choi. >> we're going to look live at paradise in butte county. the number of missing has dropped to 699. the fire has grown to 236 square miles. all that smoke from that fire has choked the bay area for two weeks. but hang in there it is about to clear out thanks to some much needed rain but the relief comes with new dangers for the wild fire scarred areas including where the campfire is still going. >> we
