57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york, i'm tony dokoupil in for anne-marie green. black friday shoppers are ss country. many retailers offered early black friday deals yesterday and promised more through the weekend. thanks to a booming economy, they expect americans to spend more than a trillion dollars this holiday season. laura podesta has more from new york. good morning. >> for many out there black friday deals are the new dessert after thanksgiving dinner. but if you're heading out the door this morning, you're joining the 116 million americans that the national retail federation estimates will be in search of a bargain. >> three, two, one. >> black friday started on thanksgiving thursday for these shoppers at macy's flagship city.

>> that's a new level of shoppers' paradise. >> it's a growing trend that turns the weekend into a five-day shopping holiday. >> for the entire weekend we're expecting more than with about 70% of those shopping specifically on black friday. >> many waited for hours in long lines to snag a deal. >> all that time outside in the cold was worth it. >> definitely. >> 70 inch tv for 600 bucks, you'd have to be insane to give that up. >> others hit the malls. >> i'm looking for the great deals. >> big box stores like best buy, target, and walmart are featuring deep discounts to draw customers. shoppers scrambled for tvs at this walmart in south carolina. other retailers are offering special promotions. this woman scored a $500 coupon at jc penney. >> i wasn't expecting a coupon at all, definitely not this. >> shopping together on black friday is a family tradition. r.

>> it's a chance for us to do something fun. >> they estimate shoppers will tend $1,007 this season. that's up 4.1% of last year's spending of nine hundred sixty 7 dollars. and that's music to retailers ears. sales are expected to be 5% higher than last year. and savvy shoppers know that tomorrow is small business saturday. that's the day americans are encouraged to shop local. a study from american express says 87% of people surveyed plan to take part in that effort this holiday season. tony. >> thank you very much. good news for shoppers there. >> yeah. one person is dead and two teenagers are ind shngn anlama . river chase day

galleria in hoover. police say a fight between two people, including an 18-year-old ended in a gunfire exchange outside foot action store. shooter fled but was confront and fatally shot by police. the hoover police captain said a 12-year-old female was also struck with a bullet. >> unfortunately if you get thousands and thousands of people together in any venue, occasionally you're going to have violence. and unfortunately and sadly for us it happened tonight. >> the injured 18-year-old is hospitalized in serious condition. the 12-year-old was transported to children's hospital and is believed to be conscious, alert, and talking, that's good news. the mall is closed until further notice. armed gunmen stormed the chinese consulate in pakistan this morning triggering a violent shootout. at least two police officersd, were also killed during the attack. no chinese diplomats or staff were harmed.

a separatist militant group has claimed responsibility. hours after the shooting, another incident at least 25 people were killed in an explosion at an open-air market in northwest pakistan. president trump spent thanksgiving praising military members for their sacrifices a to intensify border policies. nikole killion reports from washington. >> reporter: president trump enjoyed a traditional thanksgiving meal with friends and family from his resort in mar-a-lago thursday night. but even while celebrating thanksgiving, the president was refusing to give ground on some core issues. mr. trump began the day with phone calls to military leaders stationed overseas. >> i say to our great, great warriors, hello and happy thanksgiving. >> reporter: the president praised the officers for their service, then turned on other pics, infederal judges, trade, and immigration.

>> we find that it gets to a level where we are going to lose control or where people are going to start getting hurt, we will close entry into the country for a period of time. >> reporter: with a large caravan of migrant nearing the southern u.s. border, the president said drastic steps may be necessary to maintain security. some 6,000 troops have already been deployed to the region. >> if they have to they're going to use lethal force. i've given the okay. i hope they don't have to. >> reporter: defense secretary james mattis says they've authorized them to protect border personnel but they say the soldiers will not be used as a police force. president trump repeated his call to build a wall along the mexican border. >> the wall is just a part of the border security, probably the most important part. >> reporter: the president also hinted at a government shutdown in december if congress doesn't fund that wall. nikole killion, cbs news, washington. the house judiciary committee issued subpoenas for

former fbi director james comey and former attorney general loretta lynch to testify in a closed door interview concerning the 2016 election. the interviews would be looking into the fbi's actions in the hillary clinton e-mail probe and the investigation into the trump campaign and russia. comey tweeted that he will answer questions but, quote, will resist a closed-door thing because i've seen enough of their, he means republicans, selective leaking and distortion. comey has been told to appear before the committee december 3rd. former attorney general loretta lynch is being asked to testify december 4th. police say icy roads may have been a factor in the rollover of a charter bus carrying members of the university of washington marching band. rstate 90 yesterday near george, about 150 miles east of seattle. the bus was carrying 56 people, 25 student were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

the cause is under investigation. to pullman in advance of today's apple cup against washington state. more heavy rain is expected for california today. bringing the threat of flash flooding in fire ravaged areas. the campfire in northern california is 95% contained after burning for more than two weeks. it scorched more than 153,000 acres, 14,000 homes have been destroyed and 84 people are dead. the woolsey fire outside los angeles is 100% contained after burning more than 96,000 acres itself. three people died and 1500 structures were destroyed in that fire. sift through wet ashes and debris, but it's making it all safer for cadaver dogs searching for human remains. >> they're not inhaling it and then the k-9, you can't put masks on them because they have

a flight to atlanta from washington. a passenger wey. >> i'm not -- what did i do wrong? >> come on. >> police said while the flight was in mid air the man yelled and asked jewish people on board to identify themselves. he also reportedly made statements about bombings to other passengers. the man was charged with obstruction and disorderly conduct. and the canadian broadcasting corporation reports on a testing kit that promises to identify e. coli contaminated lettuce before it goes on shelves. it was developed in western university in london, ontario. researchers say it can detect a protein that is unique to the potentially deadly bacteria strain. results are ready in less than 24 hours. current tests take up to about two weeks, so big improvement there.

lined up outside retail stores across the country. diane king hall has more of what consumers can expect from this annual shopping tradition. >> wall street is back open for a half day of trading this friday after being closed for the thanksgiving holiday. meanwhile, on main street wallet hub analyzed the best deals consumers can find for black friday. walmart is knocking $100 off a six againmationration i pad. if you're in the market for a laptop you can save more than 200 bucks on an hp at staples. and for the gamers microsoft is taking about $100 off an xbox 1 s mind craft creator's bundle. that the day americans are encouraged to shop local and support small businesses. on average, 67 cents of every dollar spent at a local business

more shoppers are heading online to cross off gifts on their lists. there's an increase of 4% of shoppers on line on cyber monday. they see that millennials are driving the shift to online shopping. that's your cbs month watch report. for more head to cbsmoneywatch.com. at the new york stock exchange, i'm diane king hall. new research shows that dogs' sense of smell could become a powerful weapon against malaria. tina krause has the story from london. >> 2-year-old fraya is on the hunt and keeps sniffing until she smells her target. she's detecting malaria, a disease that infects more than 200 million people around the world every year.

>> we find that dogs are able to detect a difference between socks that have the malaria parasite and children that are malaria free. >> reporter: british researchers collected socks from west africa, some worn by children t. >> the dogs are picking it up so quickly and so easily, so if you have people carrying malaria parasites, they probably have a really big odor signal. >> reporter: though in the early stages, scientists believe dogs could be trained to smell the scent of the deadly disease on people. >> the best use of these dogs is ports of entry. airports, sea ports, or land ports. >> reporter: experts say since mosquitoes won't go away, it's critical to identify people carrying malaria to stop the disease from spreading. tina krause, cbs news. still ahead, martian visitor, a nasa spacecraft set to land on the red planet next week for a historic mission. pl
