good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york, good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. four days of memorials and other events today begin to honor former president george h.w. bush. since his death friday, tributes have poured in from around the world. former secretary of state collin powell called president bush a perfect american. this morning a government plane will transport mr. bush's body from houston to washington where he will lie in state from the capitol rotunda until tomorrow morning. he'll be buried thursday at his presidential library on the campus of texas a&m campus. good morning nicole. >> reporter: good morning. this will be former president george h.w. bush's last time here in washington. his casket is due to arrive at

the capitol this afternoon where it will be accompanied by his family, including his son, former president george w. bush. >> it will say job well done, george h.w. bush. >> he says his father's legacy will grow with time in an interview with 60 minutes. >> i think he's going to go down as the greatest one-term president ever because of his foreign policy, definitely handling the end of the cold war for example, the reunification of germany. >> the one term that he served began 1989 that coincided with the fall of the berlin wall. and the soviet union. >> all of those things could have gone haywire at any point. and the restraint, the caution, the lack of spiking the football that they showed was, i think, an enormous achievement. >> today, he will be flown here to washington where he will lie in state in the capitol rotunda until wednesday.

his body will be then flown to texas when he'll be buried next to his wife barba and daughter robin. >> history will be quite kind to him and his presidency. >> although former president beat mr. bush in the 1992 presidential election, the two men formed a bipartisan bond. >> it's been one of the great joys of my life, our friendship with him. our arguments were good natured and open. and we continue to debate things all the way up until recently. >> president trump declared wednesday, december 5th, as a national day of mourning. and president trump and the first lady are expected to attend mr. bush's funeral on that day at the national cathedral, although we don't know yet if president trump will speak. anne-marie. >> nikole killion in washington. thanks a lot. president bush's spokesman posted a photo of president

bush's service dog sully lying in front of the casket. the president had a former parkinson's disease and sully could open doors, pick things up and get help. the bush family tweet as much as our family is going to miss this dog, we're comforted to know he will bring the same joy to his new home, walter reed. that he brought to 41. rest in peace. president bush was born in new england but it was in texas that he made his mark in business and politics. although he always had the wrong accent, he was thought of as a beloved son of the lone star state. >> a steady flow of people continued to pay their respects at his statue near downtown houston. outside mr. bush's home, flags and flowers draped the entrance.

these two were friends of the first family and laid a wreath to honor him. our family as well as the community that we felt like it was a good thing to come, pay our respects. >> mr. bush was a regular at houston sporting events. in memory of president bush, the team held a moment of silence for their most famous fan. mr. bush wasn't born in texas but he moved to the lone star state in the late '40s, first to west texas before settling in houston. he returned here after his presidency and became part of the fabric of the community. >> for those of us in houston, he wasn't just a president, he was our neighbor. >> reporter: the mayor keeps a picture of himself with the first family on his desk. turner says the 41st president was always ready to use his considerable platform to help

his adopted hometown, most recently after hurricane harvey. >> he embraced the city and the city has embraced him back. >> reporter: the city of houston plans to honor him way tribute concert and since he was known to wear colorful socks, they're asking people to bring a pair to donate to the needy. omar villafranca, houston. cbs news will cover the departure of president george h.w.'s casket from texas in a special report later this morning. and we'll have another special report this afternoon when the casket arrives at joint base andrews right here on cbs. the united states and china reached a 90-day truce in their trade dispute. the break-through came after a meeting between president trump and chinese president xi jinping in argentina on saturday. china ha-a-has agreed to reduce tariffs on cars coming into

china from the u.s.t tr agrd off raising tariffs on $200 billion worth of tariffs on chinese good beginning january 1st. the chinese agreed to up its markets and buy what the president described as massive amounts of products from the u.s. and an unusual december string of tornadoes that hit over the weekend. they touched down in missouri where one person was killed. arkansas, oklahoma, and illinois were also hit. and 12 tornadoes were reported in illinois on saturday. that's the most december tornadic activity. since 1957. the town of taylorville in central illinois was hardest hit. a half mile twister stayed on the ground there for at least ten miles flattening homes and damaging others. no severe issues were reported. and that massive earthquake that hit near arch rage did most of its damage to the roadways.

people that work near the city are being encouraged to stay home today. the port of anchorage where most of the state's food andes deliv open forow. >> rorte alaska's most y ftigess. now road crews are getting to work replacing crumbled asphalt and alaskans are beginning to pick up the pieces. this is kory hester. he reported the damage to his amping rage apartment when all of the sudden an aftershock strike. >> oh my god, these aftershocks are crazy. >> you yo can feel the floor underneath you going. you have to stabilize yourself that's how violent and crazy it was. >> reporter: more than 650 aftershocks cnued to ru onriday morng.

the quake lasted 30 seconds. people dove for cover with debris falling and some ceilings collapsing. >> well, the whole ceiling came down. obviously we l >> this is where they were standing when to fall. i don't know how they managed to escape unhurt. >> reporter: this is a highway off-ramp that was severely damaged. you can see it's almost ready for new asphalt now. federal highway administration has released $500 million in emergency found help pay for all the road work. carter evans, cbs news, anchorage. overseas, the french government held an emergency meeting to discuss the weekend's rioting in paris. they say six buildings were set on fire and 112 vehicles were burned saturday. this was the latest in ongoing demonstrations about rising fuel taxes. they say protesters used hammers and gardening tools in clashes with officers and at least 378 people were arrested. coming up on "the morning news" now, football fallout. kansas city r

those are some of headlines usa today reportsws stand. patrick mahomes and kansas city chiefs are moving on after the release of star running back kareem hunt. mahomes led the way as they won yesterday. hunt was released by the team friday hours after surveillance video footage show him shoving and kicking a 19-year-old woman in a cleveland hotel in february. hunt has apologized and asked for forgiveness. the miami heralds reports a florida family is searching for a woman who vanished while visiting costa rica on vacation. they say she disappeared from an airbnb rental last tuesday. she was scheduled to return home the next day. relatives say they haven't heard from her when she texted them tuesday night to say the power was going in and out at the airbnb where she was staying.ess

the commander of u.s. naval forces in the middle east was found dead at his home in bahrain. his body was discovered saturday. he commanded the navy's bahrain suspected. the navy and the bahrain government are investigating. and our partners at the bbc say a british couple is thanking the new york city police department for finding their lost diamond engagement ring. the bride to be says her fiancee proposed in central park on friday. she says the ring was too big and it fell into a grate while they were walking in time square. surveillance video captured the couple looking for that ring. they called police but officers could not find it. the couple heade to cops went looking for the ring on saturday again. >> we opened it back up, went back down there and fortunately

on the "cbs moneywatch" a major tv deal and ralph tops the box office again. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning, anne-marie. analysts expect a strong start for stocks this week following the trade dispute truce between the u.s. and china. asian markets opened higher this morning. dow and s&p futures are higher as well and stocks gained ground on friday. the dow rallied almost 200 points. the s&p 500 added 22. and the nasdaq gained 57. the arab nation of qatar says this morning it will withdraw from the oil cartel opec. it marks the first time a mideast nation has left opec since it was founded in 1960. qatar is the world's largest exporter of liquefied natural gas. and plans to increase its

exports. it claims the move to leave opec was not driven by politics. texas-based nexstar media group has reportedly reached a deal to buy tribune media for more than $4 billion. it would make nexstar the biggest operator of local tv stations in the u.s. nexstar stations reach nearly 39% of all u.s. television households. tribune media owns 42 local stations reaching about 50 million homes. tribune also owns the national entertainment network wgn and a has a stake in the food network. an official announcement is expected today. the deal would have to be approved by the department of justice and the sec. and disney's ralph breaks the internet was top at the box office for the second week in a row. >> ladies and gentlemen, i give you the internet. >> ralph took in nearly $26 million in estimated ticket sales for the post thanksgiving weekend. the animated production the

it's called teddy bear night. when the home team scores its first goal fans throw toys which go to charity. almost 35,000 ended up on the ice. they say that's a new world record. the green bay packers are looking for a new head coach. the team fired long-time coach mike mccarthy after yesterday's shocking loss to the cardinals. it dropped their record to 4-7-1 and all but eliminated them from the playoff hunt. mccarthy was in his 13th season as packers head coach. this is the second year in a row the storied franchise will miss the playoffs. joe philbin was named interim head coach. it was a solemn first night1 killed in a mass about 500 people gathered outside the tree of life synagogue last night for a ma nora lighting ceremony.

- ( phone ringing ) - get details on this state program visit right now or call during business hours. our top story this morning. the body of former president george h.w. bush will be flown from texas to washington today beginning a four-day period of memorials and honors. mr. bush will lie in state in the capital rotunda from tonight until wednesday morning. on wednesday a national day of mourning, a state funeral will be held at the national cathedral. and then president bush will be flown back to texas. he'll be buried thursday at his presidential library on the campus of texas a&m university. the love story of george and barbara bush is one for the ages. it began in 1941 when two teenagers met in greenwich, connecticut, at a christmas dance. jim axelrod has more. >> reporter: the young navy pilot married the 19-year-old love of his life while home on
