melania trump visited the rotunda where the 45th president saluted the 41st. even though president trump has feuded with members of the bush family in the past, he seems to be putting aside his differences at least for now. he is expected to attend the late president's funeral tomorrow which he has declared a national day of mourning. anne-marie? >> thanks a lot, nikole. cbs news will provide special coverage of the state funeral of president bush. watch it tomorrow morning here on cbs. later today, the director of the cia heads to capitol hill to brief senate leaders on the murder of journalist jamal khashoggi. gina haspel did not take part in a closed door briefing last week on khashoggi's death. she has heard the purported audio that turkey says is audio of the murder. he was killed two months ago. u.s. officials believe mohammed bin salman at the least knew about the plot to kill

khashoggi, who had been critical of the saudi regime. plans to house a statue of a confederate soldier in a new $5 million building on the outskirts of the campus of north carolina sparked a noisy demonstration. the controversial bronze statue known as "silent sam" was torn down by protesters in august. yesterday angry demonstrators chanted "no shrine for sam" as they confronted police. we have more from new york, good morning, mark. >> reporter: good morning. the school's chancellor said they got about 5,000 comments from the public about that monument, and they read all of them. in the end, a committe with 20 possible locations for the statue including back where it was in august, but they said that location was too dangerous. they settled on somewhere else. students ring y "

they're protesting the plan to house the confederate statue in a new secured $5.3 million facility. >> when you allot $5 million to a rosenstein to the confederacy states of america that are giving students a cultural center or invest in resources or investing resources in diversity programs, it is hard to believe that inclusivity is genuinely in your heart. >> reporter: the chancellor says state law requires them to keep the statue on campus. >> i have a preference to move it off campus, but like everyone here, i swore to obey the law. and sometimes you don't agree with laws.>>te chaellor says the new building would house other historical artifacts for educational purposes. on monday night, this is how some of those students responded to the plan. there was at leat one unc trustee who spoke out against the change. >> we cannot, at least i cannot

ignore what the war was fought over -- slavery. >> reporter: the school spent more than $400,000 on security for "silent sam" last year. it had been standing on unc's campus more than a century before protesters tore it down in august. and the new building is expected to be finished in about four years and will cost more than $800,000 a year to operate. anne-marie? >> mark liverman here in new york. thanks a lot. arkansas officials are trying to figure out what caused the deadly crash of a charter bus carrying young football players from tennessee. the bus crashed along an interstate near benton early yesterday. the bus driver says that she lost control. one young boy was killed, and dozens injured. omar villafranca has details. >> reporter: the horror can be summed up just by looking at what remains of this charter bus filled with elementary school kids. >> we are starting rescue at this time. there's probably 50 people on the bus. >> reporter: they were members

of an all-star youth football b imemp tese coaches, chaperones, and 40 children. among them 9-year-old cameron johnson who was killed. some of the seriously injured as young as 7 years old. one coach told a memphis newspaper from his hospital bed that the driver swerved. "we just started flipped 15 or 20 times. went down a hill, over a service road, and down another hill." >> devastating. devastating. >> reporter: this man was one of several coaches and parents who raced over 100 miles to arkansas children's hospital in little rock. >> this was a huge thing for the boys. they practiced for the last six weeks, and they were super excited. so it just -- a bad thing. >> reporter: cbs news, little authorits in cta rica rme if a body they discovered is missing american woman carla stefaniak.

the body was discovered near a rental property where she was visiting to celebrate her 36th birthday. her sister-in-law was traveling with her but left early. stefani stefaniak's family lost contact with her on november 27th, the night before she was scheduled to return to her home near miami. a private forensic examination indicates a black man killed by alabama police at a mall was shot three times in the back side of his body. the officer apparently mistook e.j. bradford for the shooter when someone opened fire thanksgiving night. authorities won't release officer body cam video or other evidence. bradford's family wants the officer charged with homicide. the centers for disease control reports the numb patients with a rare polio-like disease appears to have peaked. there have been 134 confirmed cases of acute flaccid myelitis, but there's been a

after an attack in afghanistan, and lawyers want stormy daniels to pay up. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "time" reports president trump's lawyers say stormy daniels should pay nearly $800,000 in attorney fees and penalties for filing a failed defamation suit against mr. trump. one attorney told a federal judge in los angeles that his firm put in more than 500 hours on the case. he wants nearly $390,000 in fees and an equal amount in sanctions to deter daniels from filing another allegedly frivolous lawsuit. her attorney, michael avenatti, called the suggested sanctions absurd. "the pittsburgh post-gazette" reports a fourth soldier has died from wounds suffered last week in a roadside bomb in afghanistan. 24-year-old sergeant jason mcclary of export, pennsylvania, died sunday at a military hospital in germany. three other service members were killed in the attack, and two were wounded. the taliban claimed responsibility. mcclary leaves behind a wife and two sons.

white house economic advisor larry kudlow said china could cut tariffs on u.s. car imports and roll back retaliatory on u.s. agricultural imports. president trump and chinese president xi jinping agreed to the trade truce during a meeting in argentina saturday, but none of the commitments was agreed to in writing, and specifics have yet to be worked out. official statements from the chinese made no mention of the concessions. news of the trade truce sent stocks in this country higher. tech companies led the way. the dow jumped nearly 288 points, and the s&p 500 added 30 points. the nasdaq composite finished nearly 111 points higher. and speaking of the overall economy, fed chairman jerome powell says despite solid economic progress, challenges do remain. speaking at a fed awards ceremony in washington, d.c., yesterday, powell pointed to slow wage group for lower income workers, sluggish productivity, and an aging population.

powell did not discuss the fed's interest rate policies. last week, stocks surged when he signaled the fed may slow the pace of rate hikes next year. indonesia's lion air says it's reconsidering its orders from boeing. this, of course, following the crash of a lion air boeing 737 that killed 189 in october. boeing blames recent design changes for the crash. lion air faces scrutiny over its pilot's actions and maintenance records. lion air says it may cancel its remaining orders of $22 billion worth of boeing jets. and as you do your holiday shopping, keep this in mind -- there's a new report out on the playthings that kids can enjoy with their parents like building blocks and jigsaw puzzles are best according to a report from the american academy of pediatrics. even a throw-away cardboard box can spark imagination and creativity. the report found heavy use of electronic media may interfere with speech and language development.
