good morning from the studio 57 newsroom and cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. former president george h.w. bush will be honored with a state funeral this morning at washington national cathedral. his son, former president george w. bush, will deliver one of the eulogies. afterwards, his body will be flown to texas for a burial tomorrow. at a family not on the campus of texas a&m university. nikole killion is in the nation's capitol this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. today is a national day of mourning. that means the federal government is closed out of respect for the late president. and in just a few hours his casket will be transported from the capitol through the streets of washington in a ceremonial procession to the national cathedral. a state funeral for president this morning at the national cathedral in washington, d.c.

all of the living presidents are expected to attend, including president trump who met with the bush family yesterday. >> why isn't the president giving the eulogy? and it's because we have a unique circumstance here, my brother was president, you know. >> reporter: it won't be the first time president george w. bush addressed the national cathedral in a time of mourning. >> on tuesday, our country was attacked with deliberate and massive cruelty. >> reporter: three days after the september 11th terror attacks he spoke to a country in crisis. his father was in the front row. >> the emotions were unbelievably high. i got through the speech and i got sat down in the pew there and i felt this hand. it was my dad. it was very comforting. and the emotions of it are still with me. >> reporter: thousands have come to capitol hill since monday to pay their final respects while the late president lies in state. yesterday his family greeted some of the mourners.

>> it was more rewarding for me to hug people who were grieving and crying and to be able to share, i don't know, the strength that i know, that i get from being able to celebrate a life so well lived. >> reporter: earlier in the day, former senate majority leader bob dole was helped to his feet to stand and salute his fellow world war ii veteran. numerous dignitaries and heads of state will be at today's state funeral including prince charles, german chancellor angela merkel and the king and queen of jordan. anne-marie. >> thank you so much. cbs news will bring you complete coverage of president bush's state funeral at the national cathedral. it begins later on this morning with a special report right here on cbs. prosecutors are recommending that president trump's former national security adviser that's because flynn provided so much information to robert mueller's russia investigation.

flynn's cooperation was described as substantial and particularly valuable. it was just over a year ago that flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the fbi. marc liverman is here in new york with details on that. marc, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this memorandum gives us new insight into what happens next into the investigation and why it maybe far from over. little to no jail time for michael flynn, that's what special counsel robert mueller is recommending. on tuesday, mueller released this memorandum. in it, he says the former national security adviser has offered, quote, substantial assistance in several ongoing investigations. >> he participated in 19 interviews and assisted with the special counsel's investigation concerning links and coordination potentially between the russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of donald trump. >> reporter: last december, flynn became the first high-ranking trump advisor to

agree to formally cooperate with the special counsel's probe. mueller's memo credits flynn's early guilty plea with likely influencing others to also be forth coming with investigators. the details of what flynn has shared largely redablincted bec there is still an investigation. mueller's memo suggests flynn's sentence be 0 to six months in prison. the white house has been calling for the probe to wrap up soon. and later this week we expect mueller's team to also file memos revealing new details about former trump campaign chairman paul manafort and the president's former attorney michael cohen. anne-marie. >> thanks a lot, marc. another former associate of president trump, roger stone, says he isn't talking. through an attorney, stone says that he's invoking his 5th amendment right against self-incrimination and will not testify or provide documents to the senate judiciary committee. lawmakers are investigating whether stone and other trump aides new ahead of time about

democratic e-mails published by wikileaks during the 2016 election. stone has not been charged. and top senate republicans say there is no doubt that saudi arabia crown prince mohammed bin salman had a hand in the killing of jamal khashoggi. they said if he was put on trial a jury would find him guilty in about 30 minutes. lindsey graham said there's zero chance the prince was not involved. president trump refuses to blame the crown prince. khashoggi was killed two months ago after walking into the saudi consulate in istanbul. this morning, the stock markets in asia closed lower after the massive selloff on wall street. the nose dive was triggered in part by investor convutifusion the trade truce. the trump administration issued a series of conflicting

statements regarding the deal and a tweet by the president may have jolted investors. he wrote, i am a tariff man. when people or countries come in to raid the great wealth of our nation, i want them to pay for the privilege of doing so. the dow jones industrials fell nearly 800 points. the s&p 500 finished 90 points lower. and the nasdaq composite lost 283 points or nearly 4% of its value. the markets are closed today in observance of the national day of mourning for president george h.w. bush. it's reported that former cbs ceo leslie moonves destroyed evidence and misled investigators. that's according to a draft report prepared by cbs lawyers investigating allegations of sexual misconduct. the report obtained "the new york times" allegedly includes previously undisclosed allegations by numerous women. they found moonves to be evasive and untruthful at times. he was forced to resign in september. according to the times, cbs has justification to deny moonves his $120 million severance. a spokesman for the investigator

said no findings had been reported to the board. the board has reached no conclusion and the work is still in progress. his lawyer said moonves denies any nonconsensual sexual relationship and cooperated fully with investigators. now, george h.w. bush's experience as a ying naval uefa of a viator shaped his life. >> like many war-time pilots, he named his airplane after a girl back home, only had he to call it barbara three because had he lost his first two planes, one in training and one to enemy fire. that's how dangerous flying was in world war ii. there were 16 pilots in lieutenant j.g. bush's squadron. according to retired admiral samuel cox director of naval history. >> half of them were killed or captured before the end of the war.
