trigger backlash against the trigger backlash against the comedian. captioning funded by cbs good morning from the studio 57 newsroom here in new york. good to be with you i'm anne-marie green. as early as today, president trump is expected to nominate state department spokeswoman heather nauert as the next u.s. ambassador to the united nations. she was a reporter for fox news before she swroind the state department. she oversaw public diplomacy in washington and alt u.s. embassies and consulates worldwide but she has no prior foreign policy or political experience. 18 months ago she wasn't even in government. if she's confirmed by the senate nauert would replace nikki haley who announced in october she would be stepping down at the end of the year. some 50 million americans may be affected by a weekend storm that could bring heavy snow and rain to an area stretching from the southwest all the way up to the atlantic coast. eric fisher, chief meteorologist

at our boston station wbz has details. >> i'm meteorologist eric fisher. a storm that has been drenching parts of california now on the move and heading east as we make our way toward the weekend. winter storm watches up, flood watches up as well. this is a heavy rain maker with a wintery element on the northern side. we head through friday, the rain increasing across texas. not that much wintry weather until the overnight and early saturday morning, and that back edge with a thin band of heavy snow and ice will be likely. then saturday evening that rain is pushing across the southeast and it's late saturday night into sunday that we should see a high impact storm across portions of north carolina, southwestern virginia, as well as southeastern kentucky could get in on those heavier snowfall amounts. snow across the texas panhandle and then another burst of snowfall into the ozarks and northern parts of arkansas.

and then the piedmont area and up into the mountains, that's where we'll see our highest snow totals. but a lot of ice, sleet, and freezing rain. so sunday to sunday night will be a treacherous storm. a chance for over 4 inches of rain over the next couple of days. so a high-impact storm as we head toward the weekend. i'm eric fisher for cbs news. that drenching record-breaking rain that we mentioned in california produced damaging mudslides in areas that have already been hard hit by wildfires. the wet weather is supposed to dry up this morning, though. one mudslide shut down a part of the pacific coast highway and other roads near malibu in southern california. mud, water, and falling rocks ripped through barriers. there were mandatory evacuations and schools had to be shutdown. in burbank north of downtown los angeles, a southwest jet trying to land during a heavy down power skidded off a runway.

it was stopped by soft sand-like material at the end of the runway designed to do just that. it ended up just a few feet from a fence and a busy highway. >> he started skidding and braking even more aggressively and then he braked. >> there was a point where the tail end of the plane started to drift to the right so it felt like it was loosening up a little bit and that's when people started to get worried. >> the passengers got out safely and there were no injuries reported. the incident is under investigation. now to the latest on that disputed congressional race in north carolina where alleged voter fraud is a big issue. mccready withdrew his concession and says he lost because of fraud. he trails republican mark harris by 905 votes in north carolina's ninth congressional district. election officials are investigating whether republican political operatives collected absentee ballots from minority voters and didn't deliver them

to election offices. the head of the republican party says he's open to a new election if there is evidence of fraud. >> all republicans across the state are horrified by this. this is against everything that our activists stand for. >> this morning the new york times reports the harris campaign disclosed that it owed more than $34,000 in connection to an absentee ballot and voter turnout operation. it was headed by a political operative who's been accused of illegally collecting absentee ballots. a bail hearing is scheduled ed it for the chinese telecommunications executive arrested in canada facing extradition to the united states. meng wanzhou is the chief financial officer for huawei. the company is believed to be a front for chinese government es nath. her arrest sent stocks into a

nose dive yesterday. margaret brennan has more. >> reporter: as president trump and xi sat down saturday night to broker a truce in their trade war, canadian authorities arrested chinese telecom executive weng wanzhou. while she changsed planes at vancouver airport. the trump administration requested the arrest and requested extradition to the u.s. mike pillsbury is an adviser to the president. >> this seems unprecedented. >> you can't just pick a company executive and arrest them. it must be something she signed or did. >> reporter: she has been under investigation for violating u.s. sanctions in iran but neither the u.s. or canada has given an official reason for the arrest. it caused shockwaves in global markets and outrage in beijing. which demanded meng's immediate release. the arrest comes at a sensitive

time as china and the u.s. try to negotiate a trade deal and huawei is one of the biggest companies in china. it has nearly $100 billion in revenue last year. it recently surpassed apple as the world's second largest mart phone vendor. republican senator marco rubio said the company which has close ties to the chinese government is also a national security threat. >> and they're an instrument that they use to spy and try to dominate the 5g marketplace. >> reporter: is this about business or national security? >> both, but national security in many ways is more important than business. >> that was margaret brennan reporting. over seas, most cost of liefg protesters are expected in france. the protests caused tourist sites to close.

last saturday, the demonstrations turned violent. in paris people torched cars and looted stores. the protest started over a hike in the fuel tax. demonstrators are demanding lower taxes in general, better retirement provisions and higher salaries. former president george h.w. bush was laid to rest after a final emotional service and a train ride in his adoptive state of texas. marc liverman is here in new york with the details on that. good morning. >> this is the first presidential train journey since dwight d. eisenhower's remains went from his washington home to his native kansas 49 years ago. yesterday's funeral started with a 70-mile train ride and ended with an emotional good-bye. ♪ final farewells in texas for president george herbert walker bush yesterday. a funeral was held at saint martin's episcopal church in houston where he and his late wife barbara were members for more than 50 years. >> he left a simple yet profound

it propelled the u.s. in world war ii. and for the first time ever, no survivors from the uss arizona battleship are at the ceremonies in hawaii. the five living survivors all in their 90s are not healthy enough to travel. the trump administration plans to ease emissions rules for coal plants and kevin hart's oscar controversy. those are some of the headlines on the morning news stand. variety says kevin hart is stepping down as the host of the oscars. this week hart was announced as the host of the 91st annual awards but a public outcry followed over his past homophobic tweets and comments. last night hart posted an instagram video saying he was given an ultimatum overseeing the oscars to apologize or they'd find another host. he said he wouldn't apologize and later he said he was withdrawing because he didn't want to be a distraction and then he apologized to the lgbtq community for what he called his insensitive words from his past.

"the washington post" reports former attorney general william barr is the leading candidate for the job in the trump administration according to people familiar with deliberations. barr served as attorney general from 1991 to 1993 under president george h.w. bush. if confirmed by the senate, barr would succeed jeff sessions who was forced out by mr. trump. sessions' chief of staff matthew whitaker is currently the acting attorney general. a draft report obtained "the new york times" says the show 60 minutes was allowed to operate independently from cbs news and that led to trouble. lawyers were hired by the cbs board to investigate. 60 minutes executive producer jeff fager was fired in september after he threatened a cbs news reporter looking into allegations about his behavior. investigators reportedly concluded that fager's firing

was justified. they said engaged in acts of sexual misconduct with colleagues and failed to stop misbehavior by others. in response, fager said it was the first time he was hearing some of the allegations about his personal conduct. investigators also reportedly revealed that cbs continues to pay out a settlement to a woman who claims that former 60 minutes executive producer don hewitt sexually assaulted hir and destroyed her career. in total, cbs has agreed to pay the former employee more than 5 million dollars. the trump administration plans to eliminate an obama era rule cutting carbon emissions at coal-powered plants. andrew wheeler signed a proposal yesterday to scrap the rule. it requires new coal plants to use expensive technology to capture carbon dioxide emissions. wheeler, a former coal industry lobbyist, said the rules were excessive burdens for the coal industry.

ultimately recovered. at one point the dow was down more than 700 points. but a report in the "wall street journal" that the fed is considering a pause in interest rate hikes relieved investors who fear the fed may be moving too fast. so the dow ended up dropping just 79 points. s&p 500 fell 4. and the nasdaq gained 29 points yesterday. and the generic drug maker sandox says it plans to start selling an alternative to the epipen next year. it will stop allergic reactions to insect bites and food. it's been in short supply because of production problems. you recall the company got blasted from raising the price from 94 to $608. two generic versions are already on the market selling for $300 a pair. this version will sell for 250

our top story this morning, a potentially severe storm that had been drenching california is making its way east this morning. snow, ice, and soaking rain is possible from the texas panhandle to the southeast by sunday night. parts of north carolina, virginia, and kentucky could see the heaviest snow totals. on thursday, two women came forward to say that they were employed at a golf resort owned by the trump organization even though they were living in this country illegally. adriana diaz spoke with them. >> reporter: an undocumented

immigrant from guatemalahas worked at the trump national golf club in new jersey for five years, even cleaning the trump's residence. >> you would make the beds, clean the bathrooms, dust, vacuum for the residence? >> she claims her bosses knew she wasn't authorized to live in the u.s. but hired her anyway. >> translator: so he said it doesn't matter, we need someone whether or not they have documents. >> reporter: she says jorge villafuerte identified as a club facilities manager later gave her money to get a fake green card and social security card. we tried to call him but were unable to reach him. sandra says she also worked at the club while she was undocumented. their attorney claims at least a dozen undocumented immigrants are on the club's payroll. >> republicans believe america should be a sanctuary for law-abiding citizens, not criminal aliens. >> reporter: which, if true, conflicts with the president's position on illegal immigration.

the women's lawyer provided us with morales's 2017 w-2 which lists her employer as lambington farm club, a corporate name for mr. trump's golf course. the address listed is trump tower in new york. how do you know those fraudulent documents were procured with the assistance or awareness of the club? >> that's why my clients are willing to cooperate with federal authorities and state authorities so they can provide details. >> reporter: in a statement, the trump organization said we have tens of thousands of employees across our properties and have very strict hiring practices. if an employee submitted false documentation in an attempt to circumvent the law, they will be terminated immediately. >> reporter: morales expects that she and her colleagues will lose their jobs, but the women say they are willing to pay the price to come forward. we've reached out to the white house but haven't heard back. adriana diaz, cbs news, new york. coming up only on "cbs this morning," astronaut nick hague
