friendly fire. and a special delivery arrives at the space station, a capsule packed with a christmas feast. >> ninan: good evening. i'm reena ninan. we'll get to the southern storms in a moment. but we begin with a west wing shake-up. heading to the army-navy football game today, president trump announced retired marine general john kelly is stepping down as his chief of staff by the end of the year. kelly's replacement will be announced in a day or so. he is about one of 30 high-level officials to leave the trump administration. nikole killion has more from the white house. >> reporter: after months of on again/off again speculation, president trump finally confirmed to reporters his chief of staff, john kelly, will be av the end of the ye. >> john kelly will be leaving retire-- i don't know if i can say "retiring," but he's a great guy. >> reporter: the president made the announcement before departing for the army-navy game in philadelphia. >> we'll be announcing who will

be taking john's place. it might be on an interim basis. i'll be announcing that over the next day or two. >> reporter: one of the leading contenders to replace kelly is nick ayers, the 36-year-old political strategist currently serving as chief of staff to vice president mike pence, and said to have the support of first daughter ivanka trump, and her husband, jared kushner. >> i was not sent in to-- brought in to control him. >> reporter: kelly's eventual departure caps off a tumultuous tenure. he was initially credited with restoring order to the west wing, but his iron-fisted style drew criticism. in recent days, white house sources told cbs news kelly's exit was imminent and he and the president reportedly were not on speaking terms. >> on the mueller situation, we're very happy with what we're reading. >> reporter: the president also addressed the fallout from new court filings released friday by federal prosecutors and the special counsel. one memo says mr. trump directed his former lawyer, michael cohen, to pay hush money to stormy daniels and karen

mcdougal in violation of campaign finance laws. another memo charges paul manafort, his former campaign chairman, with serial lying. >> there was no collusion whatsoever. there never has been. >> reporter: as for those hush money payments, the president was asked whether he directed cohen to violate the law. the president repeatedly replied "no." reena. >> ninan: nikole, in addition to news of chief of staff, the president also made another staffing announcement. >> reporter: that's right. the president said that he is nominating general mark milley to become the next chairman of the joint chiefs of staff. he would replace marine general joseph dunford. milley is actually the chief of staff of the army, and the president made an appearance with him at the army-navy game this afternoon. he is to the president's right. he called milley a great gentleman and a patriot and said his transition date is to be determined. reena. >> ninan: nikole killion at the white house. thank you, nikole. now to the dangerous weather

moving across the south. in the deep south the threat is floods. further north, it's ice and snow. states of emergencies have been declared in oklahoma, north carolina, and virginia, which could get walloped. here's janet shamlian. >> reporter: the storm tore through texas, dumping snow and unseasonal heavy rain, travel grinding to a near-standstill as plows and tow trucks became a lifeline for those caught off guard. overnight, heavy rains hammered houston. roads and highways turned into fast-moving streams as sewers backed up and overflowed. first responders, using a high- water rescue truck to help these drivers after they stalled on a flooded city street. the rising water, a major concern in the lone star state, with the warnings widespread, many are taking no chances. >> i think candles, for sure. batteries for flashlights and head lamps. i already have my little propane

stove ready, just in case. >> reporter: the high water that swamped roads and bayous here in houston is already draining away, but the system is now targeting the carolinas with snow and bitter cold. governors in virginia and north carolina already declaring states of emergency. >> this weekend isn't the time to head out to see some winter wonderland. getting out on dangerous roads could put your life at risk. >> reporter: up to 18 inches could fall in the north carolina mountains. coastal areas are under a flood watch. supplies now in high demand throughout the region. >> we sold quite a number of shovels, sleds, and ice melt already. and we expect a big run on it here in the next couple of days. >> reporter: a powerful, early- season storm, delivering misery to millions. for cbs news, janet shamlian, houston. >> ninan: let's get the forecast now from lisa meadows at our cbs minneapolis station wcco. lisa. >> we're tracking the storm. it's moving across the southern part of the u.s., and will

continue to move into the southeast throughout this weekend. now, we have a winter weather advisory in place, stretching all the way from texas out to the carolinas. the bull's-eye, when it comes to the winter weather, we're going to watch for the location in the pink here, looking out to virginia, north carolina, underneath a winter storm warning, goes until monday morning. i'm going to time it out for you here. there's a lot of moisture being pulled in from the gulf with this storm, so we're tracking a heavy rain threat from louisiana going out to georgia. high rainfall rates could bring in some flooding for tonight and as we head on into tomorrow. heading further off to the east, rainfall amounts could be anywhere up to three inches of rain. now, as the storm continues to move off to the northeast, we transition to a snow threat. watch what happens, especially as we go into tomorrow morning. again, locations like virginia, north carolina, tracking some heavy snow possible. we anticipate that there will be travel concerns for this location going throughout, not only sunday, but going into monday morning. we'll continue to see some heavy snowfall possible in this

location until the storm continues to move on out of here once we head on into monday. could be seeing anywhere up to a foot of snow possible in these locations. reena. >> ninan: lisa meadows, thank you very much, lisa. paris is on lockdown tonight. riot police and demonstrators in yellow vests clashed in the streets of the french capital today. these protests started weeks ago over a gas tax but now address a number of other issues. charlie d'agata is there. >> reporter: the famous champs- elysees turned into a sea of yellow today, but it wasn't long before the peaceful demonstration erupted into violence. riot police used water cannon and fired tear gas and stun grenades in clashes with angry protesters. hundreds were arrested. dozens were wounded. the french government deployed 89,000 security personnel across the country, even armored personnel carriers. trying to avoid a repeat of last week's rioting, where protesters

pelted police and defaced the iconic arc de triomphe monument. but on side streets today, police struggled to stay a step ahead of the rioters. try as they might to contain them, the protesters pop up somewhere else, smashing up the starbucks and lighting fires in the streets. banks were a big target, and even though most stores were boarded up, we witnessed scenes of looting. what began weeks ago as angry demonstrations against president emmanuel macron's fuel tax hike, has now blown up into calls for his resignation. "we're not here to riot. we're not here to damage paris or france," one woman told us. we had no other way to get heard." "resign, mr. macron," he said. "we're sick of you. we're at a breaking point. it's starting to get embarrassing here. we're all sick of seeing your face. just stop." well, this is what the champs- elysees looks like tonight.

police are able to clear this area of demonstrators, but there have been flare-ups in other parts of the city. the interior minister has warned he will deploy more security personnel tomorrow, if necessary. reena. >> ninan: charlie, thanks. there was chaos overnight at an overcrowded nightclub in italy. at least six people were killed as hundreds raced for the exits before a rap concert was about to begin. dozens were injured. it's not clear what started the stampede. officials say the dead include five teenagers between 14 and 16 years old, and a 39-year-old mother who was with her daughter. there were more peace talks in sweden today aimed at ending the civil war in yemen. four years of fighting have killed thousands, pushed the country to the brink of famine and brought on the world's worst humanitarian crisis. elizabeth palmer is the only u.s. correspondent inside yemen. she spoke today with the prime minister in aden. >> reporter: the war in yemen has left millions facing hunger.

and yet, here in the coastal city of aden on the red sea, the fighting is far away, and there's plenty to eat for those who can afford it. this cruel contradiction is just one thing yemen's new prime saeed, has to try and fix. >> we are here to service the people. that's our position. this is politics, what this means is to bring service to the people. >> reporter: but how? with huge areas of the country shattered by fighting, more than two million yemenis are driven from their homes, and many of them live in temporary shelters without adequate sanitation or medical services. you start, says the prime minister, by paying government employees in stable areas on time. in this, he says, america can help. you can now speak directly to the american senators who are very leery about american involvement in yemen. what do you want?

>> supporting the government to take over its responsibility and institutions back. >> reporter: do you want money from them? direct money? >> money is one of this. because we are preparing for the budget. we have an economic plan. so the support of u.s. is important. >> reporter: but right now, there's a vicious war going on here. and the prime minister's government and its allies only control part of the country. their bitter rivals, houthi fighters, control the rest. if there's any hope for the yemeni people, it rests with peace negotiations going on now in sweden, where the two sides, government and houthis, are talking, at least for now. elizabeth palmer, cbs news, yemen. >> ninan: well, one month after a deadly mass shooting at a country bar in southern california, officials have revealed a tragic new detail about the death of a hero sheriff's deputy.

he was killed, along with 11 others, before the gunman took his own life. here's carter evans. ( gunfire ) >> reporter: when gunfire erupted at the borderline bar and grill last month, sheriff's sergeant ron helus and a california highway patrol officer ran inside. the gunman was waiting, ready to ambush. he shot sergeant helus five times, but now, there's more to the story, according to ventura county sheriff bill ayub. >> i'm deeply saddened to inform you that sargeant helus was also struck by a sixth bullet. >> f.b.i. analysis confirmed this was a rifle round fired by a c.h.p. officer. >> reporter: a gut-wrenching revelation. l.d. maples is with the california highway patrol. >> the mere thought of something like this happening is devastating to all of us who are sworn to protect and to save lives. >> reporter: sergeant helus was wearing body armor which, according to the medical examiner, provided some protection from the gunman's bullets. >> these bullets caused serious

injuries, but potentially survivable injuries. >> reporter: the highway patrol officer's bullet struck helus in the heart. >> this is sad news and a tragedy. but, ultimately, this was the most severe injury sustained. ♪ ♪ >> reporter: thousands turned out to pay respects to officer helus, who left behind a son and a wife of 31 years. the highway patrol officer only found out he was the one who fired the fatal shot this week. >> i delivered the message to him yesterday. had no clue that it was coming. he was as surprised as all of us. he's devastated. >> reporter: the highway patrol isn't releasing the name of the officer involved. he's still with the force but taking some leave. despite who fired that fatal shot, both agencies agree the gunman is ultimately responsible. reena. >> ninan: carter, thank you very much. well, a special delivery of christmas goodies arrived at the space station today after one failed attempt. the space station's robotic arm hauled in a space-x dragon

>> ninan: we end tonight looking up about 250 miles up towards the international space station. american astronaut nick hague was headed there in october, but a rocket booster malfunctioned minutes after liftoff and his dream of traveling to space was grounded. as mark strassmann reported, hague will soon get another chance. how high are you at this point. right at that edge of space, you know, 50 miles. >> reporter: this photo, taken from the international space station, captured how close astronaut nick hague got to his dream before gravity pulled him back. what goes through your mind when you look at that photo? >> life doesn't always work out the way you planned it. and, more often than not, what defines you is how you bounce back from that. >> reporter: 31 miles up, a faulty sensor had cost him his mission, but he was alive. you were supposed to go up for six months. you were back on earth in 20 minutes. >> yeah. >> reporter: what was that like? >> looking out the window and seeing space and seeing the

curve of the earth, and just this split second of just utter disappointment about "it's not going to happen and we're coming home." >> reporter: his shot at space was also the dream of catie hague, his wife, and their two young sons they watched him train for two years and travel for the launch. >> and at some point, the announcer stopped announcing, and the screens went green, and there was nothing. >> reporter: you know something had gone wrong. >> i know something has gone wrong. >> reporter: did you fear the worst? >> no, no, i didn't. i think i honestly mentally shut that out. >> reporter: in 18 years of marriage, they never had a moment like this. what struck me was how long that hug lasted. >> yes. it was a long one. i just didn't want to let him go. >> you realize in that moment this could have been really bad. and i am so lucky and thankful and happy to be standing here holding you. >> reporter: at the time, hague

admits worrying he might have lost his one chance at space. turns out, one of his sons had the same thought. >> at some moment, he said, "well, he tried it. didn't work out. it's time to get a new job." ( laughter ) and pretty much summed it up for all of us. >> reporter: except him. >> except him because he still wants to do this. >> reporter: and so does nasa. in february, hague will get his chance to bounce back, a second shot at launching to the space station. do you still have faith in the reliability of the soyuz? >> i've got tons of faith, and no hesitation hopping back in the capsule. >> reporter: no hesitation whatsoever at reaching again for the stars. mark strassmann, cbs news, at the johnson space center. >> ninan: and when hague travels in february, he'll do it with another american astronaut, and also a russian cosmonaut. and that's cbs weekend news for this saturday. later on cbs, "48 hours."

i'm reena ninan in new york. this is kpix 5 news. >> the son of the team's owners and brother of the ceo has died at the age of 35. good evening. >> the team announced this afternoon anthony tony york passed away yesterday. york was one of four children of team owners denise debartolo york and john york, and the younger brother of jed york. tony york was an entrepreneur and philanthropist. he lived in saucalito. his family released this statement today, saying in part, quote, "although our hearts are quite heavy at this time, we have so many special memories shared with him to carry us forward. tony will forever be remembered as a bright,

spirited entrepreneur with an unmatched passion to serve others." the statement did not give a cause of death. we reached out to the 49ers, but the team declined to give any additional comment. a new list is out tonight of jesuit priests credibly accused of sex abuse. devon feely reports several of them are living in a retirement retreat here in the bay area. >> reporter: the jesuit religious order released the names of roughly 130 names who have been credibly accused of abuse, covering the western part of the united states. most of those priests have died or been dismissed from the religious order. those who have not reside here in a retreat center. the list of the accused stretches back nearly 70 years to 1950, and apparently exhaustive accounting. >> i'm always happy when they release the names. it helps
