dealing with the effects of a massive and deadly wintry storm. winter w from tennessee to virginia, but north carolina where some parts got over a foot of snow is hardest hit. a state of emergency has been declared in 18 counties, more than 100,000 customers are without power, and some areas it's impossible to travel and there have been more than 500 accidents on snow and ice-covered roads. marc liverman is here with more on this. good morning. >> good morning. a man in north carolina was killed when a tree fell on his car. the conditions hundreds of thousands have been dealing with since saturday. they're not over yet. a premature blast of winter is taking aim at the a big swath of the u.s. >> north carolina is in the cold, icy grip of a mammoth winter storm. >> the flakes began falling in the carolinas and virginia saturday.

soon, the region was anything but a winter wonderland. conditions got so bad that churches canceled services. >> this is sunday morning and what you see is nobody there because the church is closed today. that sends a strong message. >> by sunday night, more than a foot and a half of snow had fallen and it still hadn't stoppe. drivers were confronted with conditions rarely seen in the south. >> terrible. terrible. that's why we had to pull over. i just told my work and told him. he said you've got to keep moving when it's snowing. i'm like we couldn't, there's no way. >> the snow was too much in some places. streets and highways were overwhelmed by snow stranding drivers and forcing first responders to make a difficult choice. >> we debated get people out of their vehicles and take them to problem is if these cars ofd,afk traffic. >> the storm left hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses without power.

and yesterday there were more than 14,000 flights delayed and more than 2,000 cancellations that's according to flightaware.com. some of those cancellations were reported on flights from as far away as the midwest. anne-marie. >> marc liverman here in new york. thank you so much. well, we are following the storm and our meteorologist says the precipitation should start to wind down. >> it's the first storm of the system even though technically it's still autumn. but that did not stop mother nature from dropping massive amounts of snow across the mid atlanta pick. saluda, north carolina, close to 19 inches. 18 inches in linville, north carolina, western virginia getting in on the action. spring valley 15 1/2 inches. the western part of the state south carolina got 11 1/2 inches. you can imagine what that did to area roads and interstate. this is i-85, one of the

largest, busiest interstates on the east coast looking like a ghost town with plenty of cars ending up on the side of roads. visibility very low as well. the large amounts of rain and snow are gone, however, there will still be some light rain and light snow possible on monday. as we look at the forecast map for monday, starting off very early, light rain overnight, could transition back to light snow with minimal accumulation amounts. but through lunchtime, that precipitation starts to pull out of the area. we have dry weather returning to the midatlantic as we head into monday night, but then another problem develops. early tuesday morning with clear skies, that could mean temperatures in the 20s and all rea roads. and even though it is officially fall, high temperatures on monday up and down the east coast only in the 30s and 40s.

cbs news. off to politics now. in washington, president trump says that he'll pick a new chief of staff soon. it was expected that vice president mike pence's chief of staff nick ayers would fill the role. but we learned yesterday that ayers and the president couldn't agree on how long he would serve. he wants to spend time with his family and kelly set it to leave at the beginning of the year. there are four people on the president's short list including north carolina congressman mark meadows, nick mulvaney and acting attorney general matthew whitaker. a series of court filings from special counsel robert mueller linking president trump to campaign finance crimes has some democrats talking impeachment or even time behind bars for the president. errol barnett reports. >> he may be the first president in quite some time to face the prospect of jail time. >> adam schiff expected to chair the house against -- gins

committee next year said president trump maybe guilty of felony crimes outlined in friday's sentencing memo of his former lawyer michael cohen. federal prosecutors said cohen paid off trump's alleged mistresses to influence the 2016 presidential election in coordination with and at the direction of president trump, he referred to as individual one. >> there's a real prospect that when he leaves office they may indict him. >> republicans like marco rubio are withholding judgment. >> these are things that are to be taken into account and seriously and i would caution everyone to continue to wait till all this plays out. >> the president was asked about the development on saturday. >> as far as the report that we sigh according to everybody i've spoken to, i have not read it, there's absolutely no llusion,r

from other allegations emerging from the special counsel's investigation that during the election cohen worked with then candidate trump and russian nationals on a potential hotel in russia described as the moscow project. >> now, if you're asking and saying, i will give you something in exchange for building a hotel, that would be wrong. but i haven't heard any evidence of that. >> the recent filings also disclose russia having political synergy to the campaign as early as 2015. prosing a meeting between candidate trump and president vladimir putin. while another memo charges paul manafort, the former trump campaign chairman with serial lying. errol barnett, cbs news, the white house. >> the president is reacting to former fbi director james comey's tesimony before the house judiciary committee. a transcript of the hearing was released saturday. yesterday the president tweeted about comey's testimony. his friday testimony was so untruthful. this whole deal is a rigged

fraud headed up by dishonest people who could do anything so that i would not become president. jeff bah gahas more. >> the republicans were frustrated because they instructed comey not to answer many of the questions. among the notable revelations, comey said when they launched its counterintelligence investigation in 2016, the trump campaign itself was not under investigation but it was launched based on the activity of four americans to see if they were working with the russians to influence the 2016 election. comey did not get into who those four americans are but we know that trump campaign foreign policy adviser george papadopoulos and carter page had attracted suspicion because of their contacts with russian operatives. republicans were hoping for more revealing information during

and comey's role in the hillary clinton private e-mail session, he wanted in a public setting not behind closed doors. >> we're talking about hillary clinton's e-mails for heaven sakes so i'm not sure we need to do this at all. >> comey disputed the president's allegation that he and robert mueller are best friends. comey also told lawmakers that he didn't believeir mueller alone would be enough to derail the information. he is expected back on capitol hill this month. so later today, french president emmanuel macron will speak to his country about the violent antigovernment protest shaking fraps. -- france. for the last four weekends, there have been violent protests. paris was hit particularly hard. nearly a thousand people are in custody. the protest started as a demonstration against a fuel tax hike that the government has since withdrawn. coming up on "the morning news" now, church investigation. hundreds of allegations of sexual misconduct are uncovered

across the u.s. they say the churches and schools covered up the alleged crimes and helped to relocate the offenders for decades. they were accused or convicted of sex crimes against children and at least 45 of them continued in ministry after the accusations came to the attention of authorities or law enforcement. "the washington post" reports another jehovah's witness was destroyed in a nine-month rash of attacks. the fire in a church in lacy was the sixth act of violence since march. in may, someone fired 35 rifle rounds into a church worship hall. in july there are was another arson, and in august a suspicious device was found. >> why are they being targeted? why is this specific religion why are these churches b targeted? what are they doing that's so wrong and oppressive?

the world's largest economies, u.s., china, and japan all reported weaker than expected economic data and tomorrow it appears the british parliament will reject prime minister theresa may's eu separation deal also raising fears among investors. on friday, the dow tumbled some 558 points. the s&p 500 lost 62 and the nasdaq slumped 219 points. good news for motorists, the price of gas is dropping sharply. the price of a regular grade gasoline is $2.51, down 22 cents in the past three weeks and down 40 cents over the last three months. the highest average price in the u.s. is in san francisco. the lowest in tulsa, oklahoma. diesel fell 9 cents a gallon over the past two weeks. meantime, a bail hearing is scheduled today for the chinese

electronics giant huawei. she was arrested december 1st in canada at the request of the united states. she faces accusations that she misled banks about huawei's control of an operation in iran. yesterday, china summoned the u.s. ambassador to protest her arrest. in court documents she argued that she should be released while waiting an extradition hearing because of her longstanding ties to canada and health conditions. tokyo prosecutors reportedly indicted nissan motor company along with its ousted chairman ghosn. he was arrested on suspicion of underestimating his compensation by $88 million over five years. he's also expected to be charged for underreporting his income for three more years. nissan itself was reportedly indicted today for making false statements in annual reports. and "ralph breaks the internet" remained atop the box week.e for the third straigh >> whoa.
