good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. it could be a dangerous commute for drivers in the southeast this morning. overnight there's the threat of black ice after plumhe a wintry storm is blamed for at least two deaths in north carolina where nearly two feet of snow fell in some parts of the state. power across the region. meg oliver is in chapel hill, north carolina. >> reporter: highways turned into ice rinks as treacherous conditions sent cars sliding across raleigh, north carolina. the powerful storm whipped across several states including virginia, south carolina, and north carolina, claiming the lives of at least two people. the early blast of winter nearly shattered records across the region. richmond, virginia, received more than 11 inches of snow, the most in over a century. the weather caused more than 500

several potential successors to john kelly have backed out. marc liverman is in new york with the latest. good morning, marc. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. originally we were hearing the president's announcement on who he'd name his next chief of staff would come yesterday. now it's possible we won't know until the end of this year. we do, though, have an updated list of who the likely candidates are after the apparent front-runner pulled himself from contention. >> i'm honored to be considered. >> reporter: north carolina congressman mark meadows is one of the front-runners to replace john kelly as president trump's chief of staff. >> any time that your name's floated to help the president of the united states accomplish things for the american people, it's flattering. >> reporter: also in the mix, budget director mick mulvaney, acting attorney general matthew whitaker, former deputy campaign manager dave bossy, and former new jersey governor chris christie. >> john kelly will be leaving -- >> reporter: the president abruptly announced kelly's

departure saturday. >> we'll be announcing who will be taking john's place. it might be on an interim basis. i'll be announcing that over the next day or two. >> reporter: nick ayers, mike pence's chief of staff, was the leading candidate but took his name out of consideration. >> it's tough under any circumstances. under this kind of white house, extremely difficult. >> reporter: lawmakers on capitol hill realize the next chief of staff will have his or her hands full. a house of representatives controlled by democrats, and the russia investigation will keep the white house on edge. >> the president needs to find somebody who he's got confidence in and whose judgment he trusts and knows how to manage a complicated office. >> reporter: the new chief of staff will be the president's third in under two years. and the chief of staff isn't the only shakeup in washington. last week the president nominated william barr to be the next attorney general, heather nauert for u.s. ambassador to the united nations, and chairman mark millie as chairman of the joint

chiefs of staff. >> a lot of changes. thank you very much, marc. the u.s. military declared five missing crew members dead after a refueling plane collided with the fighter jet off the coast of japan last week. search and recovery operations have ended. the kc-130 refueling aircraft collided with an fa-18 hornet last thursday during a scheduled training mission. two crew members of the fighter were recovered, but one died, and the other is in stable condition. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. so back in this country, federal officials charged two people accused of planning large-scale attacks on targets in toledo, ohio. one allegedly wanted to attack a synagogue. prosecutors say he wanted to kill as many people as possible. the other, a woman, is accused of looking to carry out a mass killing at a bar. jeff pegues reports. >> reporter: the fbi said ing e mbh lecron was obsessed ar

reshwas ar she told an undercover agent that she wanted to target a toledo bar. she also discussed bombing a pipeline or attacking a farm. jeff fortunato is with the fbi. as she called it. >> reporter: according to court documents, she was active on social media.e sted ptograp an gmmend inloritsg mafy ssshooters and dylann roof. roof, a white supremacist, shot and killed nine african-americans in a charleston church in 2015. in the weeks leading up to her arrest, she wrote to roof in prison. according to court papers he wrote back asking her to mail him books about civil uprisings and the nazis. in the second toledo case, the fbi says 21-year-old damon joseph, who investigators believe was radicalized by isis on

to-aresynagogues. court papers allege that joseph praised the october attack on a synagogue in pittsburgh, telling an undercover fbi agent, "my opinion is the jews are evil and g whangth." agent forto said joseph wanted to carry out a lar mass shooting. undercover employee a draft plan which outlines general operational and logistical considerations for an attack. >> reporter: because agents were tracking the suspects' activities for months, investigators say the public was never in danger. it is unusual for two major terrorism cases to be announced in the same news conference. prosecutors said it shows that terrorism comes in many forms. jeff pegues, cbs news, washington. cbs news has confirmed that a wo guilty to one count of conspiracy and cooperate with the department of justice. a hearing is scheduled tomorrow for maria butina. federal prosecutors said her

in the me too era, the radio pulled the song but asked listeners to weigh in. the vast majority still wanted to hear the song during the holidays. an olympic official has been fired in the larry nassar case, and a possible link between having a baby and cancer. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." reuters reports on a study that says having a baby temporarily increases and then lowers the risk of breast cancer as women age. the study was reported in the "annals of internal medicine." it found when compared with women who never had children, women who gave birth may have had an increased risk that continues for up to 23 years after their most recent child. beyond 23 years, the risk of breast cancer begins to fall. women who gave birth to their first child before age 25 did not have any elevated risk of pes wahe rismall, wome "uoday" reports s. olpic committee fis anlvinformer

"the "waco tribune-herald"" reports a former baylor student accused of rape will nerve no jail time after a texas judge accepted a controversial plea deal. 23-year-old jacob anderson pleaded no contest to the lesser charge of unlawful restraint. he was sentenced to three years probation and will not have to register as a sex offender. the victim who was 19 at the time says that she was raped by anderson during a party in 2016 outside the phi delta theta house. baylor and graduate student erin alvin launched a petition expressing outrage to the plea agreem >>ng ben his ant away with or your gender you think that

britain's departure from the eu continues to weigh heavily on markets around the world. trading on wall street was volatile yesterday. at one point the dow was down over 500 points but finished the day 34 points higher. the s&p 500 added four, and the nasdaq rose 51. google's ceo testifies on capitol hill today. he will testify about alleged bias and search results. including the plus service. google is shutting down the service after a software flaw exposed the names, e-mail addresses, and other information of more than 52 million users last month. delta airlines is tightening its rules on support animals. beginning next week delta will no longer allow an emotional support animal on flights longer than eight hours. and neither support animals nor trained service animals will be allowed on any delta flights if they are under four months old. 10,400 managers at verizon
