people trapped in a west virginia mine are out safe. captioning funded by cbs good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. president trump's former lawyer michael cohen has been ordered to report to prison on march 6th. cohen says he'll continue to cooperate with prosecutors and is willing to tell congress all he knows. cohen was sentenced to three years behind bars for crimes including arranging hush money to cover up mr. trump's alleged sexual affairs. cohen says that he acted at the direction of mr. trump and that he acted out of blind loyalty. paula reid has our report. >> mr. cohen, any comment? >> reporter: michael cohen arrived in federal court in new york surrounded by his family. president's former attorney fought back tears as he told the judge today is the day i get my freedom back and described working for president trump as mental and physical incarceration.

but judge william pauley described his crimes as a smorgasbord of misconduct. he said somewhere along the way cohen lost his moral compass before sentencing him to 36 months prison. after the hearing, cohen's father told cbs news he felt dizzy. his court appearance was the culmination of two criminal cases. in august, the president's long time fixer flipped on his former boss and pleaded guilty. to crimes including taxi vision and campaign finance violations. last month he struck a special deal with the special counsel's office agreeing to cooperate with the russian meddling in the 2016 campaign and pleading guilty to lying to congress. he has given the most direct evidence to date that connects the president to criminal activity. >> no, no, no. >> reporter: cohen told investigators that ahead of the

2016 election then candidate trump directed him to pay off porn star stormy daniels and former playboy model karen mcdougal who both allege affairs with mr. trump. prosecutors also revealed that american media, the company that owns the national enquirer and made a 150,000 payment to mcdougal to suppress her story to keep it from influencing the election. and the president was asked about his reaction to his former attorney? but his current attorney rudy giuliani was more than willing to sound off on the proceedings. he told cbs news that michael cohen lied in court today. he said his greatest mistake was loyalty to trump. what loyalty? paula reid, cbs news new york. >> it is now all but assured that nancy pelosi will be elected speaker of the house. she cut a deal to limit her

leadership with some younger democrats who said they'd vote against her. pelosi agreed to change party rules to limit the top three leaders to no more than two four-year terms. she held the office from 2007 to 2011. overseas now, this morning a high-speed passenger train slammed into a railway engine in turkey. after hitting the engine, the passenger train struck a pedestrian in the turkish capital. at least nine people were killed and more than 40 were injured. the train was headed from the capital to a city in central turkey. at least two cars derailed. it's unclear what caused the crash and investigators say a signaling problem is a possibility. west virginia officials say they may press charges against three people just rescued from an abandon coal mine. they have been missing since saturday and they were found yesterday. the mine has been out of

operation for two years and it's unclear what they were doing. marc liverman is here in new york with more on this story. marc, good morning. >> good morning. dozens of rescue workers have spent the last four days searching miles and miles of the maze-like tunnels. here's what it looked like moments after they were found. overwhelming joy as the three people missing since last week met friends and family. in whitesville, west virginia. >> they got all three. they got a few medical conditions but they're going to be fine. >> reporter: erika treadway, cody beverly and kala williams had entered a coal mine on saturday and they were rescued 100 hours later covered in coal dust. erika lost her shoes. a fourth person, eddie williams was also with the group. he emerged from the mine on monday and helped search teams. >> it's a miracle because it seems like this don't usually end up this way. >> rescue workers faced dangerously low oxygen levels as

they searched the underground corridors. west virginia governor jim justice thanked them for their hard work. >> right when they were gathering together, all of them came by me and hit me on the shoulder and said we're going to get them, we're going to find them, and they did. >> since the three who were trapped didn't stop moving, there were times they had wandered into areas that had already been searched. >> we go into these events not to recover, we go to rescue. >> it's unclear why the group went into the mine. a family member told cbs news he believed they were scavenging for copper wires they could resell. and one mystery that officials haven't explained is how eddie williams became separated from the other three in the first place and how he managed to escape from the mine alone. it's still possible trespassing charges could be filed. >> interesting. marc liverman here in new york. thanks a lot, marc. a pilot was seriously injured when his fighter jet crashed off the coast of honolulu.

yesterday's crash was captured on video. the 47-year-old pilot was an international guard civilian contractor taking part in a military exercise. the cause of the crash is under investigation. british prime minister theresa may agreed to forego her political future to continue as leader. she survived a vote of confidence over her brexit plan after promising not to run for re-election in twenty twenty 2. may acknowledged that a significant number of her colleagues voted against her. her critics complained that her brexit deal failed to deliver the clean break with the european union they want. tina krause reports. >> reporter: prime minister theresa may spoke after surviving a no confident vote. >> we need to get on with the job of delivering brexit for the british people and building a better future for this country. >> reporter: the critical vote by law makers and her own party threatened may's leadership and

the future of brexit. >> the results of the ballot held this evening is that the parliamentary party does have confidence. >> reporter: 200 conservative party members voted in favor of may while 117 voted against her in the wednesday evening secret ballot. the confidence vote came just days after she proposed a vote on her brexit plan that faced almost certain defeat. her compromise would hold on to britain's close economic ties with the european union rather than make a clean break. >> while i'm grateful for that support, a significant number of colleagues did cast a vote against me. and i've listened to what they said. >> reporter: with brexit less than four months away, may said we'll continue to negotiate with european union leaders. in france, the gunman who opened fire at the strasbourg christmas market remains on the loose. the eiffel tower went dark last night to honor the victims. at least two people were killed

and a dozen were injured wednesday. the suspect cherif chekatt is known to police and has a long criminal record and is described as a dangerous individual. a final senate vote is expected today on a measure that would pull u.s. assistance from the saudi arabia-led war in yemen. support for the resolution has grown since the murder of journalist jamal khashoggi. u.s. officials concluded that the crown prince mohammed bin salman must have at least known about the plot to kill khashoggi. there appears to be enough republican support for the measure to pass which would be seen as an expression of criticism to the saudis, a long-time u.s. ally. coming up on "the morning news," a judge says that a deputy in the parkland school shooting failed do his job during the rampage. and caught on camera, a boy is rescued from a burning home. this is the "cbs morning news." .

a judge has ruled against a deputy in the parkland school shooting and a fire rescue caught on video. those are some of the headlines on the morning news stand. the dallas news reports texas police officers caught a young boy who jumped out of a window to escape an apartment fire. >> kick it out. kick it out. let's go, buddy, come on. we got you, buddy. we got you, buddy. it's okay. it's okay, buddy. it's okay. >> okay, get him. >> an officer threw his baton to break a second-story window that allowed the boy to jump out of the building into the arms of other cops on monday. moments later firefighters used a ladder to rescue the boy's mom. she and her son are fine and the cause of the fire is under investigation. florida sun sentinel reports attorneys for the only armed gunman argued that he did not

have to intervene in the school massacre. a judge disagreed. scot peterson contends had he no legal duty to rush into the parkland school during the valentine's day massacre that killed 17 people. he stayed outside instead of confronting the shooter nikolas cruz. the judge refused to dismiss a negligent lawsuit against peterson filed by a parent of one of the students that was killed. an 11-year-old delaware boy named joshua trump is changing his last name because he was getting bullied in school. the boys parents say that their son has been called idiot, stupid and cursed at for two years. they say it started when donald trump first announced he was running for president. they even pulled him out of school for a year. school officials say it's okay for joshua to use his dad's surname instead of his mother's surname. and outgoing chicago mayor robert manuel is proposing legalizing marijuana and opening

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. a man was rescued after getting stuck in the grease vent of a recently closed california restaurant for as many as two days. authorities say someone heard cries for help coming from the building. yesterday deputies and firefighters discovered the grease-covered man stuck inside a metal rooftop vent above a kitchen stove. they say that it might have been an attempted burglary, but the man is okay. i'm sure he learned a lesson there. on the "cbs moneywatch," insurance claims for last month's california wildfires and china makes a big soy beans purchase. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning, anne-marie.

this morning asian and european stock markets gain ground following news that british prime minister theresa may survived a no confidence vote and word that china appears to be taking steps to open its markets to u.s. goods. on wall street the dow rallied 157 points, the s&p rose 14 and the nasdaq gained 56 points. the news from china that spurred markets has to do with soy beans. chinese made its first big purchase of soy beans since they struck the 90-day trade war truce. they bought over 145 million tons valued at more than $500 million. it's seen as a good will gesture before the next round of trade talks. soy beans are this country's single most valuable agricultural export. they year china bought 60% of u.s. soy beans sold overseas. insurance claims from last month's wildfires have hit

$9 billion and are expected to rise. seven of 9 billion in claims are from the deadly campfire according to the state insurance commissioner. the fires destroyed or damaged more than 20,000 buildings. it's estimated the cost just to clear the debris is at least $3 billion. the federal communications commission is considering ending a ban on mergers among the four largest broadcasts including cbs. they voted yesterday to open a review of the media ownership rules. a version of the rule prohibiting dual ownership of networks has been on the books since the 1940s. fcc wants to consider a rule that bans one company from owning two tv stations in the same market. and the next test flight of galactic could come as early as today. the test would send the rocket to the edge of outer space. it would be the next critical step toward virgin's plan to dive into the space tourism business. two pilots on board the virgin spaceship unity hopes to reach

it's beginning to look a lot like 2019 in new york city's time square. seven-foot tall numbers that will be used in the city's iconic new year's eve display were delivered yesterday. the giant 1 and 9 were set up on the street and they'll be on display for about a week before being hoisted into the air to spell out 2019 for the new year's eve ball drop. the ball drop has been a city tradition since 1907. the atlanta home where martin luther king jr. was born has a new owner. it was sold to the park service. for reported $1.9 million. each year thousand of tourists flock to the home where the civil rights act activity was born in nineteen twenty nine. it was bought by his grandparents in 1909. they say details of the purchase will be part of an announcement after the mlk holiday. how's this for being in the right place or maybe the wrong place at the right time. a group of hikers were climbing a volcano in guatemala a couple weeks ago.

our top stories this morning. michael cohen, president trump's former lawyer, says he'll continue to cooperate with prosecutors. cohen was sentenced to three years in prison yesterday. cohen admitted arranging hush money to two women who say they had affairs with mr. trump and says mr. trump knew. and the parent company of the "national enquirer" admitted it was involved in the hush money scheme. and three people lost in an abandon west virginia coal mine were rescued yesterday. they had been missing since saturday. the mine hasn't been operational for two years. it's not clear what they were doing inside.

west virginia officials say they haven't ruled out pressing charges. there were protests in michigan yesterday over what many say is a last-minute power grab by republicans before democrats take over the state's highest office. republicans are accused are making similar moves. dean reynolds has more. >> reporter: demonstrators crowded the michigan capital. >> i think they're trying to take away our vote. >> reporter: opposing moves by republican state house majorities to limit the authority of just-elected democrats. similar power plays in wisconsin have faced the same reaction. both states have republican governors for a few more weeks and they're being urged to sign a series of bills before incoming democrats can veto them. all designed to give legislators greater say in things like campaign finance oversight, the timing of early voting, and redistricting. michigan's retiring governor
