cbs news sources confirm the president was in the room when his then-attorney michael cohen and national enquirer publisher david pecker discussed paying hush money in august of 2015. norah o'donnell is reporting from washington this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. in the room where it happened, that's the phrase this morning. cohen pleaded guilty to breaking campaign finance laws in connection with hush money payments. we're starting here in washington with weijia jiang at the white house where the president denies knowing anything about them at the time. good morning. >> president trump is pushing back hard claiming the accusations are only being made to make him look bad. even after cohen was sentenced to three years in prison. in part for pleading guilty to the very crimes the president is denying. >> nothing at the trump organization was ever done unless it was run through mr. trump. he directed me to make the payments. he directed me to become involved in these matters. >> reporter: in an interview with abc news, michael cohen

said the hush money payments to porn star stormy daniels and karen mcdougal were made to impact the election. >> you have to remember, at what point in time that this matter came about. two weeks or so before the election. post the billy bush comments. so, yes, he was very concerned about how this would affect the election. >> let me tell you, i never directed him to do anything wrong. whatever he did, he did on his own. >> reporter: president trump said when it comes to breaking campaign finance laws, the only thing he did wrong was trust a bad attorney. >> and you know what, in retrospect, i made a mistake because i hire usually good people. >> reporter: mr. trump attended an august 2015 meet with cohen and national enquirer publisher david pecker where the hush money payments were discussed. >> it's not a campaign expense. it's a personal expense. >> reporter: last night counselor to the president,

kellyanne conway, disputed that. >> people say we did this in furtherance of the election. there is just no proof of that. that is somebody's opinion. >> reporter: president trump's statement on the matter has evolved from being unaware in april. >> did you know about the $130,000 payment to stormy daniels? >> no. >> reporter: now he says the payments were a simple private transaction and that there are ulterior motives to calling them anything more. >> they put that on to embarrass me. they put those two charges on to embarrass me. >> reporter: raids of cohen's properties have also launched an investigation into president trump's inauguration spending. federal prosecutors are reportedly looking into whether the donors who contributed to the $107 million fund gave money in exchange for access to mr. trump. the inauguration committee released a statement saying donors were vetted in accordance with the law and that no improprieties have been found. and press secretary sarah sanders said the committee has nothing to do with the

president. >> they are following the money. weijia, thank you. paula reid has been covering the cohen case since it began. she's here with me this morning. lots of questions. let's get through them. if he weren't president of the united states, would donald trump have been indicted alongside michael cohen? >> very likely, yes, because federal prosecutors are alleging he had personal involvement in the commission of a felony. if they had evidence he did it knowingly, willfully, then, yes, likely to be charged. >> now that we know the president of the united states was in the room when it was decided to pay off stormy daniels, what does that mean about the president's involvement? >> it's further evidence that he had knowledge of these payments, that he likely directed these payments and this was done in an effort to help his chances in the election. but my big question is what else did they discuss in that meeting? >> kellyanne conway says there's no proof this was done in order to influence the election. is that true? >> let's look at the timing. the daniels payment. that was done around the same time as the "access hollywood"

tapes. it would appear his decision to pay her at that time was an effort to prevent any more stories that could do lethal damage to his chances in the election. it's all about timing. >> do we know, did the special counsel robert mueller ask president trump if he knew about this payment to stormy daniels? >> i asked one of the president's attorneys about this. i could not get an answer. they would not disclose but this is his greatest vulnerability. >> if donald trump lied to robert mueller about his involvement with this payment and whether he knew about this payment, what would that mean? >> that could potentially be referred to congress for possible impeachment. it's not a crime to lie on twitter or to reporters. it is a crime to lie to federal investigators. >> paula reid, thank you. in an unprecedented rejection of presidential foreign policy, the senate is calling for saudi arabia to face consequences for the killing of "washington post" contributor jamal khashoggi. senators voted 56-41 to withdraw

u.s. military support for the saudis' war in yemen. this is a republican-controlled senate that has done this. this nonbinding resolution invokes the war powers act for the first time since the law allowing congress to block u.s. military action was passed in 1973. senators also voted unanimously to blame saudi crown prince mohammad bin salman for khashoggi's murder. president trump has repeatedly dismissed intelligence connecting the crown prince to khashoggi's death and calls saudi arabia a very good ally. as you can see, a lot of news there. and a really strong rebuke from the senate, gayle, to president trump just yesterday. >> that's unusual. a lot of news from washington. thank you, norah. police in indiana credit a phone tip for helping thwart a potential mass shooting at a school. the tip sent police racing to dennis intermediate school in richmond. officers exchanged gunfire with a teenager before the teen killed himself. dean reynolds is outside that

school in richmond, indiana, with how this incident began. >> reporter: good morning. more than 500 students here from grades five through eight were facing an all too familiar threat. but because somebody who saw something said something, no one other than the teenager with the gun was shot. police in indiana are trying to find out why a 14-year-old armed teen targeted dennis middle school in richmond, indiana, on thursday. >> did you think your life was in danger? >> yes, and actually, i started crying. and i was panicking and shaking. >> reporter: law enforcement received a 911 tip about the suspect and alerted school officials to lock down the campus. arriving officers found the armed teen outside. >> when they confronted him, he shot his way into that school door and the police raced in right after him. even as he shot at them before killing himself. >> reporter: students say they

hid with their teachers behind locked classroom doors. >> you could literally hear the fear in the principal's voice when she said lock down, lock own. >> reporter: peggy lewis lives across the street from the middle school. she spoke with the suspect's father after the shooting. >> he just said that his son took all of his guns this morning and said if he didn't take him, he was going to kill him, too. >> reporter: because he was a juvenile, they are not releasing the shooter's name or the ident ut of the 911 caller who tipped off police. earlier this year, the fbi admitted it failed to follow up on a tip it got 40 days before february's shooting at marjory stoneman douglas high school in parkland, florida. 17 students and staff died. indiana police credit the tip they received with saving lives. >> so we had an idea of what was about to happen and what a person thought was about to happen. and that's what worked. >> reporter: even though he was not a student here at the time of the incident, people told us

that the 14-year-old suspect had been bullied. and they said that his father had told them that his son had repeatedly threatened revenge. >> dean reynolds, thank you. federal investigators are trying to figure out who made a wave of bomb threats across the united states and parts of canada. it turned out to be an elaborate extortion hoax. the e-mail threats demanded $20,000 in payments in bitcoin. targets included government buildings, schools, businesses and news organizations from san francisco to new york. jeff pegues is outside of the fbi headquarters in washington. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the fbi is assisting local law enforcement agencies in responding to all of these threats. they've been received in nearly every u.s. state. senttn n c hav various locations.

the reports of bomb threats spread like wildfire across the country. >> is this bomb threat real? >> reporter: with mass evacuations from coast to coast. in des moines, iowa, they scrambled to answer a flurry of calls. >> we had four businesses here in town get a hold of us and say they received bomb threats. >> reporter: in san francisco, calls came in from close to 20 locations. >> the types of businesses affected range from offices, financial institutions. >> reporter: as the calls came in, officers and bomb-sniffing dogs soon followed. but in every city and small town, the end result was the same. >> we have not found any explosive devices or found any of the threats to be credible. >> reporter: cbs news has learned in recent weeks, federal law enforcement officials sent a bulletin to local police departments across the country warning of digital ransom threats. after 15 states received similar messages between august and november of this year. >> the very basic consequences

to an attack or even a threat like this is that it costs business, it costs government, it costs taxpayers a lot of time and money. >> reporter: cnet senior producer dan patterson says cybercriminals may be testing new methods to see how we respond. >> inevitably, at some point, we will have to contend with a cyberattack that harms or damages a city. may end up resulting in the loss of life. >> reporter: but right now, the fbi's priority is tracking down whoever is behind these threatening e-mails. in missouri, a middle school received one. investigators were able to trace the ip address to moscow, but typically in cases like these, the suspects are really good at covering their tracks. and leading investigators down dead ends. >> very disturbing stuff this morning. thank you, jeff. people at a community vigil call for the safe return of a colorado mother who vanished more than three weeks ago on

thanksgiving day. kelsey berreth's family recited pairs and held lights. she was reported missing december 2nd by her mother. she was last seen thanksgiving day by patrick ravey, her fiance and father of their baby. >> did he say what he was doing in the time between thanksgiving day and when he found out she was reported missing? >> she was working. >> so nothing out of the ordinary? >> no. >> have you been out looking for kelsey? has he been out posting flyers? what has he been doing? >> right now he's parenting their 1-year-old child, and that is a big focus of his. >> police have not named any suspects in what is still officially a missing persons case. cbs confirms it paid a secret $9.5 million settlement to an actress this year after she accused the star of the hit show "bull" of harassment.

eliza dushku was written off after she confronted michael weatherly about his behavior according to a new reporn "the new york times." the details were revealed in a draft report from lawyers hired by cbs' board to investigate the company's culture and sexual misconduct allegations. vladimir duthiers of cbsn is here with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: when eliza dushku appeared on "bull" there were plans to make her a full-time cast member but those plans allegedly ended after she came forward with allegations against the show's star. >> i need to know whose team you're on. >> i'm on your team, obviously. there is no other team. >> reporter: eliza dushku's time on "bull" was brief. she played a lawyer alongside the show's star michael weatherly for just three episodes in season one. >> wait a second. am i being released? >> well, yeah. >> reporter: according to a

draft report from lawyers hired by cbs' board and reviewed by "the new york times," dushku was written off the show within days of confronting weatherly about behavior that made her uncomfortable. among the allegations, he told a rape joke and said in front of the cast and crew that he would bend her over his leg and spank her. and in another alleged incident on set, dushku holds up three fingers during a scene. she allegedly told investigators weatherly suggested she wanted a threesome with him and another male cast member. >> i don't know what to do with you. >> i can think of a few things, but, you don't want to hear them. >> reporter: after being written off the show, dushku entered mediation with cbs. according to the times, that's when a lawyer for cbsande ovuttakes from"bull" in beliefs it would help their case. but it allegedly backfired. "the times" reports the outtakes were a gold mine that actually captured some of the harassment. cbs investigators allegedly concluded the failure to recognize the harassment was a

symptom of larger problems at the network. the network agreed this year to pay dushku a confidential settlement of $9.5 million, roughly the amount she would have earned as a season regular. later she told them my story is true and it's really affected me. we reached out to dushku but she declined to comment. weatherly did not immediately respond but told the times he immediately apologized to dushku when she confronted him, and he realizes some of his language and attempts at humor were not appropriate. he denied asking for her removal. in a statement, cbs said the allegations in the claims are an example that, while we remain committed to a culture defined by a safe, inclusive and respectful workplace, our work is farm good friday morning to you. we're tracking a weak front that will bring light rain this afternoon and for this evening.

education secretary betsy devos lost a lawsuit for denying the obama-raer obama-era policy for student loans. tomorrow is the deadline for most coverage in most states. sign-up sign sig sign-ups are down. the trump administration is offering short-term insurance plans that are cheaper but less comprehensive. those plans exclude people with pre-existing conditions. and the women's tennis association says players returning from maternity leave or injury will no longer lose their ranking. that new protection sure would have helped serena williams who gave birth last year and lost her number one ranking and dropped way down on the list. the wta will also allow players to wear leggings and midthigh length compression shorts with or without a skirt. shorts or a dress. williams caused a stir when she sported a black catsuit at the french open. new this morning, the tsa

has topped last year's record number of guns found at airport checkpoints. screeners spotted more than 4,000 firearms in carry-on bags so far this year. nearly 300 were found in atlanta's hartsfield-jackson international airport alone. last year, the tsa saw the numbers jump 17%. more than 8 out of 10 guns were loaded. we've been investigating these incidents for the past eight months to try to understand why this is happening. kris van cleave is at reagan international airport outside of washington, d.c. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we've been sifting through police records from 2017 and in almost every case, people say this was a mistake. they simply forgot or didn't realize the gun was in that carry-on bag. 239 airports found guns last year. many of the airports that found the most are in states with looser gun laws, but we found some things that are raising real questions this morning

about airport security. a loaded gun inside a flyer's carry-on bag at dallas-ft. worth airport. it's a scene that played out thousands of times last year at tsa checkpoint s across the country at a rate of nearly 11 guns a day. >> you bought it online or something? >> yes. >> that gun is coming back stolen out of florida. >> cbs news obtained video from police body cams at dfw airport showing some of the 211 incidents where a gun was found inside a traveler's bag at a tsa checkpoint in 2017. in this 59-year-old's carry-on bag, they found a loaded pistol. and several additional magazines loaded with what police say was 61 rounds of ammunition. in texas, that will get you arrested if you don't have a license to carry a concealed weapon. but laws vary by state. >> just an oversight. >> hands behind your back for me. >> reporter: just ten airports account forward nearly one-third of all incidents last year.

through freedom of information requests, we were able to review police records from seven of them. the vast majority of the people involved are men. 63% were white. most ranged in age from their 30s to 50s. but guns were found in the lug amg of an 84-year-old woman, a 10-year-old boy, an airport worker and a pastor from texas who told police he forgot the gun was in his backpack. >> can you explain why you were carrying a gun at dia? >> colorado state representative lori saine spe. >> it was a mistake. and that's why i was cuffed. >> she was not criminally charged but did receive a nearly $2,000 fine from the tsa. >> hopefully this is a learning experienceormakehe samemistake. >> reporter: the agency can see. tsa says a typffense draws a $3900 fine. but we found, on average, it's actually closer to $1100.

no one last year received the maximum. tsa administrator david pekoske. >> the fine could be $3900 or $4,000. >> no one pays that. >> on occasion they do. we're trying to provide that warning that, hey there is a penalty here. and if we can prevent it in the first place, i think that's a better way to approach it. >> reporter: a review of the police documents reveals at least three incidents last year where it appears the gun was missed by tsa screeners at one airport and only discovered on the person's trip home. >> how does that happen? >> it happens because the technology doesn't get everything all the time. either there's a technology issue, there's a procedural issue or there's a training issue. >> i'm a little troubled by the fact that the gun went through the x-ray machine and was missed. >> oh, i'm troubled by that, too. everybody in tsa is troubled by that, and mistakes happen. >> how often do those mistakes happen? >> i can't give you an answer as to how often but when it does happen, we do everything we can to figure out why it happened.

>> reporter: the tsa is starting to roll out new ct scanners to checkpoints. that should make it easier to spot weapons. the agency is also work with airports to try to improve signage around checkpoints reminding people you cannot bring a gun through. while there are procedures for having a gun in your checked bag, you can never have a weapon loaded or unloaded in your carry-on bag. all of the people you saw in our story told police they did not realize the gun was in the bag they brought to a checkpoint. bianna? >> mind boggling watching that. great reporting, kris. thank you. three people rescued from a west virginia coal mine are speaking out about their harrowing ordeal. crews found cody beverlily, erica treadway and kayla williams in the mine. they had been trapped inside for more than four days. chip rooeid spoke to the survivs about what happened.

accused of child cruelty is speaking out saying he intended to discipline his 7-year-old daughter with a spanking. state assemblywoman joaquin arambula is home with his three children this morning. the children were briefly removed by child protective service dollars. jericka duncan is here with the case highlighting the risk of corporal punishment even for parents. good morning to you. >> very devicesive story depending where you fall on the spectrum. it's important to point out that spanking your child is legal in all 50 states, but if it crosses the feline cruelty or abuse, it becomes a crime with potentially harsh punishment for the parent involved. kwl when he was sworn in as state assembly man two years ago, his wife and young daughters were at his side. he was arrested earlier this week. he says he spanked his eldest child who told her teach are the next morning. >> we have nights where we can

ng kids right amount is age sometimes they like they have the idea that they have something industrious to do at home but they need time to play and explore and become curious. as we get older, fourth grade, 45 minutes, an hour. through high school two and a half hours. what is appropriate, three hours but schools have taken it too far. >> when did this happen? >> it started with our whole race to get amazing resumes. the best test scores. >> get them into schools and colleges. >> what do i need to put on this so i can get to the best college but that has escalat a ly with ntal heah problems. i busy work. that's the complaint i'm hearing. we do so many segments on the need for children to socializing with their friends. parents say there's not enough time in the day.

are those factors well? >> those are important and it should be thought about as a supplement not something -- a supplement to what they learn in schools. sometimes there is merit in repeating something or experiencing in the a different way or a different venue that we learn better that way, that's how our brains take it in but i don't know i would say more time for sport or another scheduled activity. i'd love to see more time for kids to have nothing to do. unstructured time so they have to figure it out on their own. that's the most important thing they should be exploring. >> how do you feel about parents' participation in home work! parents should guide. >> asking for a friend. >> first grade is fun. >> first grade is fun to do the projectings and you want to color it inside the lines but if they can't manage it on their

known a small amount of time -- and that's part of a task, how do i manage this? what is enough and when can i move on? that's important to learn but parents' involvement and overinvolvement is an issue. >> what should parents do if they see their kids are totally overwhelmed either by the time or kind of home work they have? >> if they're really overwhelmed they should let the school know and if there's not an appropriate response follow it to the next level. is it the principal or whoever is the next in command? that might alarm us that there's some kind of learning disability or processing probability if it's really overwhelming or teachers are simply giving too much work. >> it may be a good opportunity to establish more of a relationship with the teacher. thank you so much. >> thanks for having me.

to meet her so you got to spend time with her getting ready for this role. tell us about the interaction with her, what you learned and what she was like working with you. >> oh, it was fantastic. she's such a loved figure, so deeply revered so definitely at first it was intimidating taking on the notorious rbg but we spent time in washington, we went over before we started shooting and had time to get to know her on a personal level so we went to her office and then i spent time in her apartment and she was showing me old photos of her and marty, her husband and i could just see at that moment a deep, deep love in that relationship. >> would she give you notes? what note do you remember getting from her? >> she was involved from the very beginning. her nephew wrote to screenplay and so from the beginning she

was giving me diticulous notes e that good lawyer she is and those notes were interestingly often about the law and not being completely correct and also about their relationship and party and how he was conveyed but there was nothing whatsoever that came from any vanity about how she was presented which is testament to the woj she is and the integrity she has. >> that clip we showed where a man says "keep your emotions in check" and she has the perfect rejoinder. did she talk about that? wh >> when she was starting out, she was in a system that didn't want her there. they were like why will you here? so she was working constantly against the status quo and what what's fascinating is how she harnessed this anger and frustration that she felt and turned it into something very positive and then managed to completely change the system, change the laws to make the

world fairer for all of us. >> there's a great scene about not wanting her there. she's at harvard and the professor says to all the women in the room, explain to be here instead of a man. that happened? >> verbatim. you can't quite believe it but it's exactly what happened every step of the way, she was in the minority with very few women with hundreds of men so from the beginning she has had really had to fight and continues to do so. >> not to take away from her own achievements and fight but you touched on this earlier. i think she'd be the first to say that none of this would have been possible without marty and her husband's support and not only love but his faith and confidence and what she could achieve. >> and that is what so special about their relationship.
