power oceabeach in san francisco. >> take a look at the big waves at mavericks. it brings out the top servers. this is a live picture from chopper 5. some servers are out right now braving those conditions. there catching big waves. the big wave surf contest was not given the green light. there is the scene. choppy conditions. jet skis are there to help surfers get into position and out of danger in case they wipe out on those waves. we have seen people catching some waves waiting for the next set to come in. >> this is not beginner territory. organizers are hoping for bigger waves later in the seaso

from new york. >> this peer is 40 foot tall. watch as a rate of -- wave rises up. >> reporter: this longtime resident says she is not seen at this wild since the storm in january 2017.>> it's glorious. absolutely glorious. it is beautiful, all inspiring. nature at its best. >> reporter: it's humbling. back to you. heavy rain in the bay area led to early-morning crashes. one involved a chp officer. it started with a crash on southbound 280 at about 1:30 this morning. then a hod en to check on the accident was hit by another vehicle.

then another vehicle hit a patrol car. no one was seriously injured. here's a look at how much rain we got and the high surf warning with all those waves. about 20 feet are the wave heights. a high surf warning is still in effect until 9 pm. a very rough surf. swells 21 feet. breakers can be more than 40 feet. there is a live look. there are strong waves out there. here's a live look with the oakland airport camera looking west at san francisco. you can see the sun and a few clouds. we picked up a lot of rain with that storm system that rolled in yesterday. about an inch and a half in some areas. san jose picked up at inch of rain. san francisco got 3/4 of an

inch. this is much needed rain. we will talk about what you can expect as we track our next weather system that will bring the rain forest. details on that coming up in just a few minutes. and east bay man admitted to setting up social media for isys and went before a judge. federal charges were brought for supporting a terrorist organization. we were there and have more on what happened this morning. >> reporter: the hearing is still going on. it could go one for the next two days. cameras are not allowed in the courtroom. we did hear from anti-terrorism expert discussing levels of threat the suspect may pose. they also went through some online chats. he says he knows how to make a bomb, detonator but does not know how to connected to a cell phone.

add that to the discussions that he had with an undercover fbi agent. this video is part of that discussion. this was released. he is driving around with an undercover agent talking about plots. he is originally from yemen. he pleaded guilty to people -- making social media accounts. he wanted to kill 10,000 people here. he signed up to join the police department so he could steal weapons. alleged plots were setting fires in the hills, can go -- bombing gay bars and having backpack bombs at uc berkeley.

his lawyer and his family insists he is not a terrorist. they say he is a sarcastic young man who likes to brag and get a rise out of people. they said that he did not commit or plan a violent act. he opened some social media get -- accounts. he knows now this is wrong. >> it sounds like we will be hearing from jailhouse informants who spoke with the suspect. the jail has been calling him the terrorist. the prosecution wants him to get 33 years in this case. the judge called him one of the most dramatic sentencings. we are hearing from the stockton father of a critically ill child. they are being refused entry into the u.s. his two-year-old is being stopped at the border.

does >> reporter: the interior secretary announced he was going to resign by the end of the year. the president said he has accomplished much during his tenure. i want to thank him for his service to our nation. >> reporter: his time in office has not been without controversy. they are looking into whether a land deal with halliburton in montana is a conflict of interest. a small, two-person energy company landed a no-bid federal contract to repair utility lines in puerto rico following hurricane maria. he denied playing any role in that decision. he will be leaving as democrats prepare to take control of the house. they have been preparing to launch investigations into his actions.

50 degrees in santa rosa. here's what you can expect for your afternoon. mostly sunny skies. mainly drive for the work week. we could have showers returning at the end of the week. this is what brought the rain yesterday. that low is moving out of here. dry conditions mainly for the work week coming up. at 3 pm there will be a mix of sun and clouds. tomorrow we will be mainly drive. you can see a few showers from the north bay. that is a possibility but partly sunny skies tuesday. on friday, this is friday at 5 am on futurecast this looks like a wet start to the day for friday. then we track another weather system behind that. that will bring the rain for sunday. a couple of weather systems for the end of the week. scientists -- sunset tonight will be 4:52.
