i'm anne-marie green. this mornicue crew digging through collapsed homes, hotels, and other buildings in indonesia searching for victims of saturday's deadly tsunami. ca.wave crashed into a concert. at l 281 people are known to have died when the deadly wave hit without warning. more than a thousand were injured and dozens are missing. rebecca reports from indonesia. >> reporter: villas like this one here are built right on the ocean and they didn't stand a chance when the huge waves hit. this, the state of the swimming pool that would have been packed this time of year with holiday makers for this season. over here, rescue workers, the military, teams from the national disaster agency are

clearing up some of the rubble smashing through the concrete and the mess all there to clear it away to begin what will be a slow rebuild process. over here you can see the remains of the villa and cars that were parked here at the time smashed together. heavy building equipment has now arrived in the area to help people with the clearing up. power and phone lines are being restored so this area today as part of the recovery effort. the president visiting and promising that they would help people to rebuild here. many of these houses build very close to the shore. and although the government has warned people not to spend too much time close to the beach, that there may be another tsunami, people are coming back to this area to go through the

ruins of buildings and their homes to take anything of value. and many say they'll have little choice but to rebuild here once again. back to you in the studio, anne-marie. >> all right. back in this country, president trump decided that he wanted defense secretary jim mattis out now. the president decided to replace mattis beginning january 1st, two months earlier than planned. pmeanwhile, the new white house chief of staff says it's very possible the partial government shutdown will last into the new year. tom hanson is here in new york with the details. good morning. >> good morning. the stalemate in washington doesn't seem to be letting up and the border wall is taking center stage. democrats and republicans are trying to break the impasse over president trump's border wall. incoming acting chief of staff d discussions with republican and

democratic party leaders on saturday. >> the president's not going to not accept money for a border wall. >> mr. trump continued to take his case to twitter writing the only way to stop drugs, gangs, human trafficking, criminal elements and much else from coming into our country is with a wall or barrier. >> we currently are only screening one out of five cars and trucks coming across our border. let us increase the technology there some something like a z portal. that's the kind of security the democrats want to see, not some wall. >> the president made some other news via twitter this weekend announcing he's maiming patrick shanahan, a former boeing executive, as acting defense secretary. the move pushes current defense secretary james mattis out the door two months earlier than originally planned. >> i think the president no longer relied on mattis to be able to deliver the president's vision. >> secretary mattis resigned last week after the president's decision to pull u.s. troops out of syria.

now president trump continued to tweet on the syria pullout saying late sunday that president erdogan of turkey has told mr. trump he will eradicate whatever is left of isis. >> thanks, tom. for some folks out west it's going to be a white christmas eve. snow is expected across the mountains in northern california and western oregon. winter weather advisories are posted for the cascades and parts of the northern rockies. the heaviest snow totals will be up to a foot or more. they're expected in southern oregon throughout tonight. evelyn taft of our los angeles station kcbs is following the storm system. >> starting off with temperatures in the 40s and 50. the east 30s and 40s. midsection of the country cooler. a pretty calm weather pattern for most of us with the exception of the west coast. as we move into the rest of your christmas eve today and your christmas day. starting off with quite a bit of snow and rain as we move overnight into your christmas holiday.

your futurecast is set for 3:30. this is 3:30 this afternoon. in the west we are expecting rain and mountain snow. it's going to continue to spread over most of california, pacific northwest. you will see quite a bit of snow in the desert. lake tahoe travel could be stretch treacherous. east of the rockies as we head past your christmas and later in the week we are expecting rain and snow to eventually hit the southeast and the northeast as well posing for some travel delays potentially for anybody traveling after your christmas holiday. otherwise, by your christmas day most of the rain and snow hitting the rockies there and continuing on through wednesday and thursday of next week. quite a bit of rain for the midsection of the country by your wednesday. i'm evelyn taft, cbs news.

and ongoing salmonella outbreak prompted a second voluntary recall. jennie o turkey is recalling more than 160,000 pounds of raw turkey because of salmonella contamination. >> the outbreak dates to late last year. more than 200 people across the u.s. have fallen ill. 84 have been hospitalized. one death has been reported in california. the raw turkey comes from a variety of sources. supreme court justice ruth bader ginsberg is w recoup rates from surgery. she'll remain in the hospital for a few days, the court said. she underwent surgery friday to remove two malignant growths in her left lung. ginsberg had been treated for cancer two other times. the supreme court meets next january 7th. ginsberg has never missed case arguments. coming up on "the morning news" now, drone investigation, new information regarding two

and if you're pregnant or planning to be. ♪ a southern california neighborhood has been turned into a christmas spectacle. hundreds of people packed santa clarita over the weekend to check out the annual holiday lights. some homeowners have been taking part in what's known as wakefield winter wonderland since 1995. this year's theme was the night before christmas. there are possible new clues in the case of a missing colorado mother. and the body of a young migrant who died in the u.s. returns home. those are some of the headlines on the morning news stand. "the washington post" says the body of a 7-year-old girl

who died in the custody of the u.s. border patrol is back in her native guatemala. a coffin containing the body of jack lynn cao wkahl was receive the ministry. no family members were there. the girl's grandmother says the family did not have the money to travel from her village. her body was driven from the countryside to be handed over to her father. the girl's father reportedly has a court date next week in the u.s. to determine his migratory status. two people arrested for the drone sightings that shutdown the gatwick airport have been released without being charged. authorities continue to look for suspects and are offering a reward of $63,000. the drones first appeared wednesday. about 1,000 flights were canceled or diverted. affecting tens of thousands of passengers. the airport is back to operating

normally. the denver post reports investigators looking into the disappearance of a colorado mother have found evidence in idaho. 29-year-old kelsey berreth was last seen in colorado thanksgiving day shopping with her daughter. her fiancee, 32-year-old patrick frazee is in custody facing murder charges. berreth's body has not been found. police won't say what evidence but berreth's cell phone pinged there three days after she vanished. the washington examiner says one of the last known survivors of the 1943 warsaw ghetto uprising against the nazis had died. he died saturday in jerusalem at the age of 94. world war ii broke out when he was just fifteen. he helped save the last survivors of the uprising by smuggling them out through sewage tunnels. after the war, he immigrated to pre-state israel and then fought in its war of independence. there's only one known living survivor of the uprising left in israel.

the group includes officials from the federal reserve, the securities and exchange commission and others. the treasury confirms that six largest banks yesterday to confirm their institutions are okay in light of last week's market route. u.s. stock futures dropped last sunday as the markets get ready to open for a shortened holiday week. this month the market suffered steep losses. the s&p 500 is down 12.5%. nasdaq dropped 13.5% and is now in a bear market. after declining nearly 22% from its high in late august. friday, the dow last another 414 points. the s&p was down 50 points, and the nasdaq composite19 president trump has blamed fed chair jerome powell and the fed's program of raising interest rates for the stock selloff, but the administration is denying a bloomberg news report that mr. trump discussed

firing powell after the latest interest rate hike. and treasury secretary mnuchin tweeted that the president does not believe he has the right to dismiss powell. elon musk says tesla will reimburse customers if delays in car deliveries cause them to miss out on significant tax credits. tesla says orders for cars placed by october 15th would be eligible for the full tax credit of $7,500 and that customers would receive their cars by the end of the year. but some customers are still waiting and have taken to social media to complain. and aquaman topped the pre-christmas box office take. >> journey beyond the edge of the world to the hidden sea. >> a hero. >> aquaman took in an estimated $67.4 million in its debut weekend. the movie cost $200 million to make. mary poppins returned, debuted

our top stories this morning. at least 281 people were killed when a tsunami hit indonesia saturday night. more than a thousand others were injured. the giant wave hit two of indonesia's more populous islands without warning. nine hotels and hundreds of homes were destroyed. indonesian officials say there may have been an underwater landslide when a volcano erupted. and president trump wants defense secretary mattis out now. mattis resigned when mr. trump decided to withdraw u.s. troops from syria, but was expected to work through february. and the partial government shutdown looks like it will stretch into next year. the white house says it has
