christians around the world are celebrating the birth of christ at the vatican pope francis celebrated a christmas eve mass. he urged kriftdans to seek a simpler, less materialistic life. tom hanson is here in new york. good morning. >> good morning, wendy. as christmas arrived this morning, millions of christians worldwide ushered in the holiday with song, hope and prayer. from bethlehem to sydney, australia, and all corners of the world, millions of christians are welcoming christmas. at the vatican, pope francis celebrated an evening mass at st. peter's basilica. the pope's message? shun materialism. instead, focus on the holiday's message. a simplicity, charity, lov.

tourism officials say bethlehem is enjoying its busiest christmas season on record. the tiny christian community attended mass amid tight security. in britain, queen elizabeth ex tolled good will and understanding. >> treating the other person with respect and as a fellow human being is always a good first step. >> in washington, president trump and the first lady attended mass at the washington cathedral. the first couple likely would have gone to services near mr. trump's palm beach estate. but the president decided to stay in the capital amid the border wall stalemate. >> and the national christmas tree that sits behind the white house reopened to the public yesterday thanks to a grant from the national park foundation. it had been closed due to the government shutdown. wendy. >> tom hanson here in new york, thanks.

back in this country, stock markets are closed today. investors trying to catch their breath following days of heavy losses. the dow is on its way to its worst december since the great depression in 1931. japan's nikkei followed wall street plunging near 5% this morning. tokyo and other markets are on track to lose 10% of their value this year. christmas eve turned into another bloodbath on wall street. the dow jones industrial lost 653 points. the s&p 500 lost 65 points and the nasdaq dropped 140 points. the latest sell-off triggered by another attack on the fed by president trump. errol barnett has more. >> after the stock market saw its worst christmas eve performance in history, the dow hit its lowest point of the year. while the s&p 500 is on track for its worst december ever.

trade wars and the government shutdown are deepening investor uncertainty, as are president trump's swipes at the independent federal reserve bank.t idnge, the onlyroblem our ecomy has is the fed market. >>othing will deter us from doing what we think is the right thing to do. >> after announcing another rate hike last week, president jerome powelled underscored the importance of being free from government independence. >> we have the independence which we think is essential to do our jobs in a nonpolitical away. >> diane swank says the approximated's criticism of powell is not helpful. >> it's not productive to do for financial markets. >> swank also believes treasury secretary steve mnuchin may have made things worse when he released this sunday's statement

saying these six largest banks have ample liquidity. >> we weren't worried about the banks and now you're telling us we should worry about the banks, too? it worked contrary to what treasury hoped and unfortunately added more chaos instead of clarity. >> the treasury secretary tweeted out assurances on saturday that president trump won't fire powell. on monday, the president spoke to coordinate what government agencies can do during the ongoing shutdown. cbs news, the white house. there is no christmas miracle to end the partial government shutdown. congress has gone home for the holiday. the white house continues to insist mr. trump will reject any budget deal that does not include money for a border wall or fence. democrats remain stiff in their opposition. senate minority leader chuck schumer's office says the parties are very far apart. nearly 400,000 federal workers

are on indefinite furlough, not getting paid. some 400,000 others are on the job without pay. in indonesia rescue workers are using drones and dogs to search for survivors of saturday's tsunami. the death toll another has climbed to 429 with at least 14 people injured. at least 428 people are missing. a number of hotels and hundreds of homes were destroyed or damaged. officials say the tsunami was probably caused by the collapse of a volcano slope which was not picked up by warning sensors. a symbolic victory for the family of an american college student who died after being held by north korea. a federal judge ordered korea to pay the family of otto warmbier $500 million. he was with a student group when he was arrested for allegedly stealing a propaganda poster. he w

hard labor. he died in 2017 shortly after he was returned to the u.s. in a coma. his parents say he was tortured. the first criminal case has been brought against oscar winning actor kevin spacey since sexual misconduct accusations a year ago. soon after, spacey posted a bizarre video to social media. anna warner reports. >> kevin spacey will be arraigned on the sexual assault charges next month. prosecutors say the incident happened in a nantucket, massachusetts, bar in july of 2016. former boston tv news anchor heather enrue said the man was her 18-year-old son. >> kevin spacey bought him drink after drink after drink. and when my son was drunk, spacey made his move. spacey stuck his hand inside my son's pants and grabbed his genitals.

>> meanwhile, the actor posted this video can on youtube. >> i know what you want. you want me back. >> seemingly in character as frank underwood from his former series, "house of cards." >> and you trusted me even though you knew you shouldn't. >> spacey was released from the show because of multiple sexual assault allegations. los angeles county prosecutors are reviewing a case. actor anthony rapp was the first to come forward last summer, alleging a 26-year-old spacey assaulted him when he was 14. spacey said on twitter, he did not remember the incident but apologized to rapp. this is the first time the academy award winner has posted publicly in more than a year. he posted the video saying in part -- >> but you wouldn't believe the worst without evidence, would you? you wouldn't rush to judgment without facts, would you?

mr. trump and first lady melania fielded phone calls from kids yesterday as they helped out with norah d's santa tracker program. the north american aerospace defense command takes calls from children trying to pinpoint santa's location. the program started in 1955. authorities in el paso, texas, are calling for help after immigrants were dropped off hundreds of migrants at a bus station. i.c.e. released about 200 my grants at a bus station sunday and about 200 more yesterday. congressman beto o'rourke says i.c.e. usually coordinates with shelters making sure there's space.he says i.c.e. ming a mistake by not giving the community any heads up. i.c.e. says it was done to, quote, mitigate the risk of holding family units past the time frame allotted by the govenment. a british charity group provides those in need with life's necessities that most of us takes for granted, soap, shampoo and other personal eye

our top story this morning at the vatican this christmas, pop francis is urging christmas to choose simplicity, charity and love over greed and materialism. the pope celebrated mass and pilgrims from around the world traveled to bethlehem to mark christmas. e rst lady attended services at washington national cathedral. this morning, tokyo's nikkei stock index plunged nearly 5% following the lead of wall street. where stocks suffered another major sell-off. the dow lost another 653 points yesterday. that came after the latest criticism of the federal reserve by president trump. mr. trump said on twitter that the only problem with the u.s. economy was the federal reserve. christmas is a time for giving to family, friends, coworkers and the needy.
