the shutdown and repeated his call for more border zrusecurit. 800,000 federal workers are affected. more than half are considered essential and expected to go back to work tomorrow without pay. the house and senate return thursday in hopes of getting a deal done. wall street is closed today for christmas. nervous investors are hoping for a rebound after u.s. stocks suffered the worst christmas eve losses ever. the dow jones plunged 653 points yesterday. the s&p 500 fell 65. the nasdaq dropped 140. the free fall was, in part, reaction to president trump's tweet railing against the federal reserve. he said, quote, the only problem our economy has is the fed. stocks are on track for their worst december since the great depression. at least 128 people are still missing in indonesia after the deadly weekend tsunami. resc rescuers searched for survivors. the tsunami roared ashore saturday, killing at least 429

people and injuring more than 1,400 others. homes were ripped apart by the wall of waves. hundreds of people fled to preports of another tsunami. some took refuge on top of a mosque. it turned out to be a false alarm. disgraced actor kevin spacey is facing a felony charge in the alleged groping of an 18-year-old in 2016. this is the first criminal charge against the oscar winner since his career collapsed amid a series of sexual misconduct allegations. stacey posted a bizarre video yesterday where he appears to beness former "house of cards" character. >> i'm certainly not going to pay the price for the things i didn't do. >> spaes he's due in a massachu court. he faces five years in prison if convicted. pope francis urged people to see differences not as a danger but as a source of richness. francis delivered the traditional christmas speech to

michelangelo's masterpiece up close and in digital form. lasers, lights and a thunderous sound system.tinctly modern tou. michelangelo painting the sistine chapel. it's an immersive experience. even its creative director has a hard time describing. >> it's easier to say what is not. there is ballet but it is not a ballet. there's a lot of beautiful music by sting but it's not a musical. it's a very technological show. >> he treated michelangelo as a sort of superhero whose frescos in digital form turned rome's former symphony hall into a second sistine chapel. what did you think?

research center shows that 46% of americans celebrate christmas primarily as a religious holi y holiday. that's down from 51% back in 2013. the most reverend michael curry is a presiding bishop of the episcopal church. he famade headlines with his sermon at the royal wedding. he joins us today with the true meaning of christmas here in the studio. you believe the message of christmas is really all about love. >> it really is. >> is that hard these days when we're living in a nation that's so vitriolic and so mean and so hateful. you still say hold on to love? >> hold on to it. hold on to it because it's all we got. the truth is, if love is just a sentiment, then it doesn't matter. but love is a commitment.

john 3:16 speaks about christmas. god so loved the world that he gave his only son. it is love which is tied to giving, not taking. giving. we give gifts as a symbolic way of reminding us that god shows us the way of love, which is to give and not to count the cost. >> you said hold on to love because that's all we got. elaborate on that. >> if you'd asked me years ago, what's the opposite of love, i probably would have said hate. to be sure that's part of it. but the real opposite of love is selfishness. love is the opposite of self-centeredness. self-centeredness is the most destructive force in human relationships and political ones. love is the antidote. love is the cure. love is the way. >> i think the cure and the antidote is what many need. how do we do that when we're so polarized in the nation today? >> i think that's where we have to make a decision and a commitment. that's why i say love -- >> and we're mad too. >> yes, but make a commitment. i'm going to live in the most loving way possible today. if i'm a member of congress, i'm going to live in the most loving

way possible and i'm going to look for legislation that is about loving the neighbor. that is not about my self-interest but about the common good. that's what love looks like in political relationships. in business and commerce and in daily life. and that kind of unselfish sacrificial love is a game changer in all sorts of life. >> it has been quite a year for you. we saw you and meghan and harry's wedding. i saw you at the funeral of president george h.w. bush. what stands out for you? >> on both occasions at the funeral of president bush, the word love recurred over and over and over again. >> it did. >> and at that wedding, the truth is it was wonderful. the truth is we kind of all showed up, two million of us showed up to watch two people tell the rest of us that they love each other. >> that was a standout line for me. i was reading, and you had two -- many people didn't know you before that day, that you actually still get nervous.

you are an eloquent speaker. you know what you are going to talk about. what are you nervous to talk about? can't you call on the lord? >> i do call on the lord. i want to make sure he shows up. y i get nervous before. once i am in the moment, then i'm focused. then you get in the zone and keep going. i get nervous. you don't want to mess up. there i was at the bedding, two million people. i didn't want to scratch my nose. >> and you didn't. in 2019, other than love, what do you want us to remember? >> what i really want us to remember is there is one god who created all of us. if all of us have the same parent, that means we are brothers and sisters, siblings of each other. we need to treat each other and treat this creation like we are brothers and sisters. >> you can't get that message enough. so nice to meet you. >> great to meet you. >> thank you for coming today. >> god bless you. >> god bless you, too, bishop curry. gayle, i am in favor of spreading love during the

holiday season. a routine traffic stop turned into a life changing event for two families. when new jersey state trooper michael patterson pulled over with retired police officer, he had no idea he was about to meet his real life guardian angel. what unites us as americans is far greater than what divides us. "cbs this morning saturday" co-host michelle miller shares the story of a serendipitous encounter. >> reporter: with his body cam rolling, trooper michael patterson pulled over a white bmw for what he thought was a routine traffic stop. >> i grew up with this guy. >> reporter: after some small talk, retired police officer matthew bailey realized they were from the same neighborhood and had crossed paths before thanks to the trooper's mom. >> i was in labor and didn't realize it. before you know it i am on the bed and michael's head is crowning. >> reporter: every birthday michael's mother recounted the

story of how an officer helped his dad deliver him at home. >> years ago. it was the first baby i delivered. that's why i always remember the address. at the house, in the bedroom, oh, yeah, by myself. that was me. >> i am like, wow, is this really happening right now? >> reporter: matthew, michael, and his mom had the chance to return to the scene of his birth 27 years later. who was going through your mind? >> at that point i didn't have any children of my own. i had never seen it, experienced it. i was trying to recall academy days of my training. >> reporter: they train in the academy for this? >> a brief segment. much too brief. >> grateful to mr. bailey for coming to assist. everybody asks why i get upset. i get upset because i honestly don't know what would have happened had they not come to my aid. >> i think a greater power somehow made that meeting

happen, and i am not sure where it's going to take us. i am willing to go on the journey. >> we are definitely going to stay in touch because this is a such relationship. i'm sorry. it's a special relationship, and it was meant to happen. things just don't randomly happen like that. >> yeah, some people might call this serendipity. what do you call it? >> purpose. >> yes. >> indeed a special relationship. and that was michelle miller reporting. the families have gotten together since that reunion and have plans to see each other over the holidays. to top it off, there is a new member of the family. trooper patterson and his wife had a baby boy in july. they, however, were able to make it to the hospital. >> that's a great picture. >> yeah. >> just shows you some people say there are no coincidences in life. that was certainly one. that's such a cute face of that baby. that shows you that was truly meant to happen.

collect trees curbside in the next few weeks. so mulching programs clip and shred the trees to be used in gardens. local nonprofit will often provide pickups. and astronauts on the international space station will be dining on a special christmas meal today. a spacex dragon cargo ship delivered holiday goodies earlier this month, including smoked turkey, green bean casserole and candied yams. they will decorate shortbread and butter cookies with icing for dessert. the holiday season is time to spend with loved ones. for those who serve and their families it can be a tough time of the year. in profiles in service we spotlight americans who dedicate their lives to helping others. now we want to take a look back at some of the people we introduced you to this year and there is a theme. women who inspire. we went to the citadel in south carolina to watch cadet colonel

sarah zorn in action. zorn is the first woman to lead the cadets in the military academy's 176-year history. and jan crawford boarded the "uss abraham lincoln" to meet captain amy bauer schmidt. the first woman in navy history to hold the title of executive officer of a nuclear warship. we met the easter sisters. their family's tradition service dates back at least 100 years. and we climbed to the top of the brooklyn bridge for a training exercise with detective tina guererro. she is the only female counter sniper in the nypd's elite emergency service unit. >> that was pretty awesome. thanks for the great climb. >> you're welcome. >> this is no sweat off your back to do this? >> no, i enjoyed every minute of it. >> reporter: what does service mean to you? >> service is to be there. to be there to help people, you know, great people of the city.

to serve the city. i tell you, it's really important to me. >> reporter: you do it because you love it. >> it's hard hours, time away from your family and you risk your life every day? >> yes. >> reporter: it's worth it? >> well worth it. >> service means playing your part to protect your country and the people you love. >> when i was younger my parents would tell me with a servant's heart. sacrifice. >> reporter: you told us your parents never treated you or your sisters like girls? >> right. our parents never raised us like the typical girl. they never said we couldn't do anything of any sorts. they never limited us. my dad would look at me like any of the other people and say, like, you can lead men. why not? >> reporter: you are the first woman executive officer of a nuclear aircraft carrier. what does that mean to you? >> i hope i am a good leader and mentor to men and women. >> reporter: what does service mean to you? >> service is contributing to something greater than yourself.

for me it is about supporting and defending the constitution of the united states, but it's also about these young men and women i lead every day. >> reporter: i know you have used the word being a servant leader. what does that mean? >> to be a servant leader is to put others' needs before your own. i believe servant leadership is the only successful leadership because no matter your decision, you are making decisions as a leader on behalf of others. i hope to be a person of service, empathy, kindness because i think those are some of the fundamental things that people need in this world right now. a little more leadership. a little more empathy and understanding. >> think about that. empathy. thinking of other people is a key element of true leadership. and there is some exciting news about those easter sisters. since we told you their story, the oldest sister cory delivered a baby girl. look at this! and she goes by addie.
