u.s. customs and border protection agency has ordered medical checks on every child it's holding focusing on those under the age of 10. this follows the second death of an immigrant child this month. an 8-year-old boy died yesterday after being hospitalized twice. anna werner has that report. >> reporter: they said in a statement that the 8-year-old guatemalan boy was already in cbp custody. when he became ill and was taken to a new mexico hospital. he was initially diagnosed with a common cold, then a fever and was released 1 1/2 hours later with prescriptions for amoxicillin and ibuprofen. but later in the day, the child exhibited symptoms of nausea and voming and was transported back to the hospital where he died shortly after midnight. the boy is the second child to die in cbp dufd this month.

a 7-year-old guatemalan girl jakelin caal died from extreme dehydration after she and her father crossed the border. >> please rise, i'll begin by swearing you in. >> caal's death has triggered a homeland security investigation and criticism secretary kirstjen nielsen when she appeared on capitol hill. >> what i can tell you is -- >> i'm talking about people who have died in your custody. you don't have the number? >> i will get back to you with the number. >> okay. >> reporter: the guatemalan foreign ministry says the boy and his father entered the u.s. last week and were taken to a new mexico border patrol station on sunday. with congress out of session for the holiday, democratic critics took to twitter. sheila jackson lee said this shocks the conscience. texas congresswoman elect veronica escobar. >> over the last yew years there have been literally hundred of migrants who have died in u.s. custody. it is especially tragic when

children die in our custody. >> reporter: officials have not released a cause of death. the hospital says it can't comment due to privacy concerns. custom and border patrol did say there will be an independent and thorough review of the case. we asked i.c.e. to respond to our questions but the agency said they're unable to respond to media queries during the government shutdown. anna werner, cbs news, new york. president trump says he can't say when the government will reopen but he insists the partial shutdown will continue until there's an agreement to put more walls along the u.s./mexico can border. this morning, some 800,000 government workers have been furloughed or forced to work without pay. tom hanson is here in new york with more. good morning. >> good morning. pointing by democrats and republicans over the christmas holiday with both sides digging in. the partial federal government shutdown is going into day five. there are no signs of a break in the stalemate between president trump and democratic lawmakers.

>> i can't tell you when the government's going to be open. i can tell you it's not going to be open until we have a wall, a fence, whatever they'd like to call it. >> on christmas day the president said there has to be some kind of barrier to staunch the flow of illegal immigrants, drugs, and human trafficking. when asked if the $5 billion he wants for the wall say firm number, he left is open. instead the president referred to the more general border security package he asked from congress. >> it's complicated because we're getting $25 billion that's already approved, but that's for everything. >> senate majority leader mitch mcconnell said he won't bring up a vote unless there's a compromised bill. chuck schumer tweeted the president wanted the shutdown but he seems not to know how to get himself out of it. as long as the president is guided by the house freedom caucus, it's hard to see how he can come up with a solution that

can pass both the house and senate and end his #trumpshutdown. many politicians say they're willing to take this fight in 2019. hena. >> thanks. at least one person was killed when a small plane crashed into a residential neighborhood in south dakota. the plane crashed in sioux falls last night. sioux falls is located near the minnesota border about 235 miles from minneapolis. four homes were evacuated. it's reported the person who was killed was on board the single-engine plane. it's unclear how many people were on board the plane. overseas now, people living along the coast near an island volcano in indonesia have been asked to move inland. a false tsunami alarm triggered a panic. at least 429 people were killed by the tsunami that hit without warning saturday night. 16,000 were displaced. it's believed the wave was triggered by a landslide on the slope of a volcano.

the volcano continues to erupt and more waves are possible. a snowstorm is expected to hit the upper planes and midwest today and tomorrow. snowfall totals could exceed one foot in some areas making it difficult for travelers. we're following that system. >> good morning. some locations in the upper midwest. this will be the first storm bringing a heavier amount of snowfall this season, believe it or not. we're looking at a good portion of the midwest to be impacted by this storm. and the timing goes all the way until friday, yes, the rest of this week. so here it is. for the rest of the day we're going to continue to see that snowfall in the dakotas pushing into minnesota. off to the south that's more of a shower but even thunderstorms threat. eastern portion of the state of texas may deal with hail or damaging winds.

as the storm continues to push off into the east, especially on friday this is more of a rain threat. flood concerns possible across the southeast. when it comes do snowfall amounts, we do have a foot of snow possible stretching from nebraska out into minnesota and we'll continue to track this going into friday. note out that timing for holiday travel. meteorologist lisa meadows, cbs news. more than 3,000 patients who were operated on at a new jersey surgery center may have been exposed to hiv hepatitis "b," and hepatitis c. the patients this procedures done sat will brack, new jersey, in 2017 and 2008. they say it's due to deficiencies in infection control. the patients are being urged to have a blood test. but the new jersey health department says the risk of infection is low. so far no illnesses have been reported. people who donated to a go

he reached out to the heads of six largest u.s. banks to check on their liquidity. and convened a financial crisis group. the market suffered their worst christmas eve drop ever. the dow last 663 points and is on track to have the worst december since the great depression. they report mnuchin may be in serious jeopardy. the president called him a very talented guy. stock markets in asia finished lower while here at home we have the christmas week plunge. u.s. stocks have pulled back dramatically in recent weeks over slowing of u.s. and global economic growth and political uncertainty in this country. president trump has blamed rising interest rates for the market selloff. mr. trump says the fed is raising rates too fast. american nissan motor executive greg kelly is free on bail. he was released last night after 37 days in custody on bond.
