now at noon, a man hunt is underway for the man shot and killed a northern california police officer and then took off. good afternoon. officer ronil singh was making a traffic stop just before 1:00 this morning when he was shot and killed. this happened in the community of newman about 20 miles southwest of tur lock. -- turlock.

spect s caughtn >>eporter: the investigation continues frd a man police say shot and killed one of their own this morning just before 1:00 amg. you're looking now -- 1:00 a.m. you're looking now at the vehicle officer ronil singh was driving when he made the traffic stop at merced and eucalyptus. a few moments later, he called out shots fired over the radio. agencies respond responded to help and officer singh was found with gunshot wounds. his k-9 still in the car. the suspect then took off. the investigation is tough, especially for those who knew him. . >> we were friends. and so it's tough. when it's somebody you know, our count, it's a large county and we know a lot of the law enforcement officers personally. it makes a toll and an impact. one of my friends, my buddies

died doing his job. >> reporter: in fact, officer ronil singh immigrated from the virgin islands and living the american dream. here's a look at the suspect. the still pictures from taken from surveillance video out of i a nearby convenience store. it's believed this is the man that shot officer shing during the trap shop -- singh during the trap shop. hooegs driving an extended dodge ram pickup truck with dealer plates ar auto. still unclear whether this was taken before or after the shooting. if you have information on the suspect, call the police. if you come in contact with this person, do not try to approach him. but a definitely sad day for folks out here. the newman police department and the preponderance of evidence who lost one of their own just a month ago. back to you. the chp is investigating a deadly crash in the south bay.

a car was found up an embankment. more on how the driver ended up elsewhere. . t rns is aan's fami found hy. thblked off a to fic tonetis mains. the chp says around 6:30 p.m. christmas day, there were reports after a damaged abandoned toyota rav 4 in the number one lane of 85. police officers and firefighters searched the area, but found nothing. this morning, the family came back the search the area and found him on the southbound side in the vegetation. why didn't you search across the street? >> there's no easy answer to that. i'm sure that there will be more details regarding why this body wasn't located. >> reportein

the man crashed into the wall on his own and suffered head injuries, cuts, and lacerations and stumbled across the traffic without getting hit. >> they got out and walked across the lanes of southbound traffic and came to the right hand shoulder and they deceased from the injuries. >> reporter: investigators do not expect foul play. the family was on scene and did not want to talk on qualm ra. >> the -- camera. >> the last place we want to be is somewhere where somebody deceased in a traffic collision. especially around the hols. -- holidays. >> reporter: kip doe, kpix 5. new at noon. >> the family of awe grocer hit and killed in san francisco is honoring his memory by opening a new store. workers were stocking shelves and making sure the meat cases were ready at gus's community market on 4th street in mission bay.

>> reporter: the 8-year-old was coughing and had glossy eyes. he was taken to the hospital and diagnosed and treated for a common cold. less than an hour later, he was released with a prescription for antibiotic and ibuprofen. that even, the boy was nauseous and his father declined further assistance. three hours later, he was lethargic and nauseous. agents sent him back to the hospital. on the way, he lost consciousness, could not be revived, and pronounced dead at 11:48 p.m. >> this administration put deterrents and enforcement ahead of humane treatment of people. >> reporter: the commissioner of the u.s. customs and border protection says the facilities are not designed for the huge flow of migrant children. >> we need help from congress and to budget for care for

children in the facilityings. >> reporter: this the second death of a mie grant child in u.s. rural custody this month. it comes amid a standoff over funding for a border wall. on monday, the body of of a 7- year-old was buried in guatemala. she died a day after being taken into custody. her father had alerted agents she was sick. mola lenghi, cbs news, the white house. supreme court justice ruth bader ginsburg is out of the hospital after undergoing cancer surgery. a spokesperson said she was released yesterday and recuperating at home. she had surgery on friday to remove cancerous nodules in her left lung. no further treatment is planned. still ahead, they sound good. but find out how the free trial offers you see online could cost you big time in the end.
