it's wednesday, january 2nd, 2019. this is the cbs morning news. congressional leaders from both parties are heading to the white house today for a briefing on the border wall and security as the government shutdown enters day 12. and up close and personal an exhibit at a florida zoo turns into a terrifying experience after a toddler falls into the rhinoceros enclosure. and 2019 will be a very big year for a mega millions player. one ticket hit the $425 million jackpot.

good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbsew headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. as the partial government shutdown enters day 12, they ar if that meeting with president trump will actually help to end the shutdown. tom hanson is here in new york with more. good morning, tom. >> good morning. that meeting is going to be about border security. with the shutdown nearing two weeks, its effects are becoming more and more apparent. for the first time since the partial government shutdown began 12 days ago, president trump is expected to meet with part of border security. and we're working on it. >> it will be president's first meeting with democratic leaders since december 11 when he said he'd be proud to shut down the

government over border security. >> i will be the one to shut it down. i'm not going to blame you for it. >> it's unclear what come from today's meting. presumptive house speaker nancy pelosi expects to pass legislation to reopen the government tomorrow when democrats take control. she noted in a letter to her colleagues that these bills contain no new wall funding. last night white house press secretary sarah sanders called pelosi's plan a nonstarter. senate republicans said they won't pass anything that doesn't have the president's support. >> government shutdown and how you can help. >> reporter: while lawmakers squabble in washington, volunteers are picking up the slack where they can. these rock climbing guides at joshua tree national park are cleaning the bathrooms. >> not to mention we're about $400 out on cash buying toilet paper. >> visitors to golden gate recreational area are taking out trash. >> i understand that the park rangers aren't working so we had plastic bags, why not clean this mess up. >> the smithsonian museums are

closed until the shutdown ends. about 800,000 federal employees are working without pay or furloughed until the shutdown is over. and the largest federal employee union is suing the government claiming that forcing employees to work without pay violates federal law. anne-marie. >> thank you so much, tom. u.s. customs and border protection is defending its use of teargas to repel migrants trying to breach the border fence in tijuana. they fired teargas as about 150 migrants tried to enter the u.s. nearby reporters say the gas affected migrants including women and children, as well as members of the press. u.s. customs and border protection says the gas was aimed at rock throwers on the mexican side who prevented agents from helping children being passed over the fence. ahead on "cbs this morning," we'll talk with the incoming chairman of the house judiciary committee jared nadler about the government shutdown and the border wall. there's a potentially

dangerous storm system moving through the south. it's making its way through arizona, new mexico, and texas and heading east. winter storm warnings are in effect. the national weather service is calling for heavy snow and freezing rain. several inches of snow have fallen in arizona. the desert was covered in a blanket of white. forecasters say there could be icy, slick roads throughout the state including the tucson area. and a search continues for a gunman who shot and killed a 7-year-old girl riding in a car. police in the houston area say they have surveillance video of that pickup involved in sunday's shooting. janet has more. >> everybody loves her. >> in her houston hospital bed, laporsha lay grieving and in shock over the death of her daughter. >> he left us a corpse. we no longer have a joyful 7-year-old running around.

>> reporter: 7-year-old jasmine barnes was shot and killed early sunday when a trainer for no apparent reason pulled alongside their car on a service road and opened fire on washington and her four daughters. the 30-year-old mom was hit in the shoulder. police believe the shooter, a white bearded man in his 40s was driving this red pickup truck. security cameras caught a grainy image of the vehicle before the gunfire. can you think of anything that transpired? >> i replayed this moment in my head over a million times to see did i cut this man off? did i make a wrong turn in front of him? and i didn't. he fired off at us for no reason. >> washington was able to drive away realizing when she pulled over to call police one daughter was hurt by a shattered window and jasmine wasn't breathing. her second grader died of a gunshot wound to the head. >> we're going to bring justice

to my baby. >> a senseless crime and a family vowing that a child killer will not go unpunished. >> every crack, every rock, every corner that could be flipped, turned, and turned around we're going to be there. >> the sheriff is asking for the community's help in identifying the driver of that red pickup. a challenge in houston where the trucks are common. deputies say they're so outraged by this crime they are treating it with the intensity as if it were their own child. well, a 2-year-old girl is recovering in the hospital this morning after falling into an exhibit at a florida zoo. toddler was taking part in what's called a hands-on experience in the zoo in melbourne yesterday. they say she fell between a set of steel poles separating guests from the animals. she came in contact with one of the snout's of one of the

rhinos. the girl's father who reportedly rescued her said that she's in good care and doing well. in russia now they're calling the rescue of a baby trapped in the rubble of a collapsed apartment building a new year's miracle. monday's collapse killed at least nine people. barry petersen has more. >> reporter: careful, careful rescuers shout. then cradled in their arms, 10-month-old vanya alive after being buried 35 hours in temperatures that dipped to 4 below 0. after a quick injection, the race for life begins. let's go, let's go, they yell! run, run! rushing him to a local hospital he was transferred to a hospital in moscow. the rescue came after a portion of this building collapsed after an explosion of a gas leak. magnitogorsk is a city now sad

enned. my colleague died, she says, a young woman now gone. vanya may be alive because he was in a crib wrapped in blankets. russian officials warn he's in serious condition, but he has a whole nation praying that he will survive, that miracles really do happen. barry petersen, cbs news, london. it's a very happy new year for a mega millions player in new york. there was one grand prize winning ticket in last night's $425 million jackpot. the winning numbers were 34, 44, 57, 62, and 70. the mega ball was 14. the ticket was sold at an auto service shop in long island. the new year's day drawing was the eighth largest jackpot in mega millions history. the winner of october's $1.5 billion prize still hasn't come forward. check those tickets, don't throw

"the new york times" says the american accused of spying in russia is a marine veteran who was in moscow for a wedding, according to his family. russian authorities say paul wayland was detained on friday during an act of espionage. wayland's family says he's incident. his arrest comes 15 days after a woman pleaded guilty in washington to conspiring to act as a foreign agent. florida deputies pulled a woman from a sink car in a dramatic new year's day rescue. 20-year-old amanda antonio lost control of her car earlier yesterday after another driver cut her off. the car rolled several times and came to a stop upside down in a water-filled ditch. trapped inside, she used her apple watch to call 911 and help the dispatcher guide rescuers through the dense fog. >> i was like well are they coming? did they find me?

did they find me? yes, just keep talking. i kept talking to her. then by the time they came, the water was like right here. >> deputies managed to pull antonio to safety just as the car was being submerged in the waste-deep muck. she suffered only minor injuries. utah's standard examiner says the woman who helped kidnap elizabeth smart is living near an elementary school. wanda barzee is listed in a sex offender registry as living several blocks from a salt lake city school. the 73-year-old was released from pris someone to september. smart issued a statement saying people with a history of child abuse should be housed as far away as possible from schools, families, and community centers. and our houston affiliate khou says harris county, texas, made history when 17 african-american women were sworn in as judges. they were sworn in yesterday during a packed public ceremony. they were elected to office in november as part of a democratic the #blackgirlmagic. it's thought to be the largest

and premium averages $2.85. gas buddy says 42% of gas stations in the u.s. are selling gasoline for under $2 a gallon. prescription drug prices are going up in the new year. industry analysts say pharmaceutical companies are raising prices on hundreds of drugs including many generic medicines. allergan is leading the way with increases of nearly 10% on more than two dozen products. the report shows more than three dozen drug makers raised their prices yesterday. the average increase was 6.3%. and ivanka trump is aimed to launch a us what effort aimed at women's empowerment. she has made supporting women in business a part of her portfolio as a white house adviser. the initiative seeks to align government agencies behind the mission of supporting women's economic development around the world. a formal launch was planned for

colgate optic white. whitening at works. preparing girls for a lifetime of leadership. our top stories this morning. as the partial government shutdown enters its 12 day, congressional leaders from both parties head to the white house for a briefing on border security. it's unclear if the meeting with president trump will end the shutdown. democrats say they'll take action to reopen the government when they take control of the house tomorrow. and investigators in the houston area hope surveillance video will help find the gunman who fired several shots into a car sunday killing a 7-year-old girl. police believe the shooter, a white, bearded man in his 40s was driving a red pickup truck. thousands of cats and dogs were among the casualties in the campfire in northern california in november.

and many suffered severe burns. now some are receiving promising new treatment. jayuccas has m >> reporter: when the campfire broke out in paradise, mindy and curtis stark were 3,000 miles away from their 8-year-old boston terrier mix olivia. >> i can't imagine what she saw or what she did. >> reporter: did you think that olivia was gone? >> oh, yeah. >> i thought she perished. we really expected the worst because no one could get to her. >> reporter: their house was left in ashes. police finally found olivia nearly a week later. the starks reunited with their dog at a local clinic, but she was severely burned. >> she had such extensive injuries not only to her paws but her sides, second and third degree burns. so it was quite painful for her. >> reporter: so they decided to treat olivia in a highly unusual way, with fish skins.
