5:33 am
let's try this again. smart move. because buzzed driving is drunk driving. good morning and welcome to mosaic. this is laura welcome. you were true the archdiocese in san francisco . >> i am the director of worship. >> there is an office of worship. and i think you would be called a liturgist? you're also an amateur theologian, historian? you're very well versed in things catholic. archdiocese depends on you to make sure our liturgy and ceremonies are proper, correct and right.
5:34 am
we are talking today about christmas. you have created a little slideshow for us. our point here today is that christmas is full of riches and if you're willing to slow down and see the season for what it is, you enter into a wonderful set of stories that really have no end. there is depth in them. how should we start this? >> i think you talked about it earlier, christmas isn't just one day. it is not just for those 12 annoying things from that song. i get a little tired of it by the end of the holidays. it doesn't start 12 days before christmas, christmas is actually the first day, 26 is the first day and we go 12 days. i told you earlier nothing makes me sadder when i'm driving on the 26th of december and i see dead christmas trees already on the curb. and i think they are done, finished, toys already
5:35 am
unwrapped and we are finished. no, christmas keeps going. we have an entire christmas season. in the catholic church other than easter. we think the christmas day is so important we don't celebrate for one day we celebrated for eight days. so the very first thing is we have this great feast and then we say we are going to make a party out of it. let's go for eight days. we then celebrate that's christmas. can we put up our slide? take us a little bit through the details. we have a slide, which takes us from december 25. >> the first octave, is the nativity of the lord, birth of christ. immediately following is the feast of saint stephen who is our first martyr. then we have the feast of saint john the evangelist who we
5:36 am
believe wrote the book of john as well as several other books of the bible. the feast of the holy innocents not the most of each story in the bible but an important one for us. we then have a day without special moniker just the fifth day after christmas. then the sunday we will celebrate the holy family of jesus. jesus mary and joseph being that holy family unit put together. and then again monday becomes a down day, day within the octave of christmas. and we start our second week and we have the feast january 1 where everyone else is celebrating new year's and getting over there revels. we have mary, holy mother of god. following that is a few memorials. we have basil and gregory the great if you wonderful doctors of the church. we have a memorial of two american saints, two very important american saints on the fourth and fifth. then we have the epiphany on january 6 which falls on a sunday this year many times it doesn't. it's wonderful when it falls on
5:37 am
a sunday . >> epiphany means showing forth the arrival of the spirit is what we would say . >> in many ways in the east it is there christmas. a much more important feast for them . >> the feast of three kings? >> feast of three kings, feast of arrival. >> we have one for the slide? >> we only insert when christmas is early a week of christmas week day masses it culminates in january 13 when we and our christmas season with the baptism of the lord. >> the baptism of the lord. interesting how they put it, first chapter of any good catholics life. you are born in a couple weeks later you are baptized. you take it in order . but i'm curious, who did baptized jesus, did we know? >> john the baptist. there is only two nativity stories in the gospels of and luke.
5:38 am
the pap tourism story is on all four in the bible. we find it more authentic that's where he begins his ministry and we actually see the revelation of god, this is my son who i love. that is a very important feast for us, kinda say christmas is over there is other stuff, baptism is a very important occasion. is when you mark your life as a christian . >> interesting, let's take them one by one, you have a slide to show, you tell me, you call them out. >> again january 25 we have the nativity of christ, immediately following the next day is the feast of saint stephen and old king wenceslaus. he was a deacon and our first martyr. he died in about 35 so we know he lived in the time of christ . >> died in jerusalem? >> yes because he preached the gospel of christ and they said you have to back off. he said i am not going to.
5:39 am
you can kill me but i'm not going to let go. but this story is told in the acts of the apostles? >> it's interesting to me the first day after jesus's birth is the third first death on his behalf. it is a grim start to the religion . >> it doesn't get any nicer because the following day is the feast of the holy innocents. >> let's look at that slide a little information is there also . >> feast of st. john, john the evangelist show him as the eagle in many depictions of him. mainly because he is the most spiritual of the gospel, he is 50,000 foot level of gospel. very poetic. >> he was one of jesus's disciples. we credit the gospel . >> we credit him there is a lot of debate in that on scripture scholars. some say he is the gospel jesus loved. often referred to that. he would've been contemporary with jesus. >> let's take a little break
5:40 am
now. the next one we will look at when we come back is going to be what? >> the feast of the holy innocents. >> also a dramatic and tragic moment. i hope you can fill us in on that. we will take up brief break and talk about the riches of christmas with laura.
5:41 am
woman: it's not my first time bartending so... man: it's a sausage party in here. woman: it's fine, i'm very familiar. man: cause you're a sexy girl, sam. last thing, totally last thing, is that the music when momo kicks it into high gear, is going to get a little bit loud in here, so your customers are going to have a hard time hearing you, so you may want to... (inaudible whispering) woman: what? >> yeah, i'm watching it too. i see them every day. >> the curtains, they're always drawn in this place.
5:42 am
>> i know. >> that guy, it seems like he's in charge of them. i don't know, i don't feel very good about this. >> we have to report this. >> yes, absolutely. welcome back to mosaic we are here with laura who is the director of the office of worship for the u.s. diocese of san francisco. let me ask you about how many years have you been doing this job? what is the training and expertise? >> i have a degree in liturgy from the university of notre dame and most of the people in my role have either a masters or doctorate and we also have
5:43 am
several priests who have this role. just someone who has a passion for liturgy and how the church prays and you have to have a little bit of knowledge, how ceremonies work how to put things together i was like a producer on the show. >> if some of the viewers have been to the cathedral in san francisco and seen the beautiful liturgy taken place there. you are the manager of those things, the stage manager? >> my friends ask me it is kind of like being a weatherman wedding quarter ordinator make sure all the people are in the right place at the right time in the music. >> it is beautiful, ornate, complex and suggestive liturgy. >> if i have done it right, yes . >> tonight we're talking about christmas and moving slowly through the feast days that come after. we are onto the feast of the holy incidents innocents owed tell us about that . >> it is the story from luke
5:44 am
where herod who had heard there was a new king had been born and had tried to get the wiseman to tell him where he was. when he realized he wasn't going to find out he decided the best way to get rid of the king is to kill any male child under the age of two. so he sent his armies to slay the innocent children. any boy child under the age of two. if this reminds people of the story of moses that is very similar because luke was echoing that story of moses. these were our first martyrs. the first people to die unwillingly. not unlike stephen they weren't saying this is my faith i'm going to die for it they were completely innocent in the whole scheme of things. suffered because of one man's jealousy and anger. and this time it is kind of a downer a few days after christmas. but in our world we have a lot of innocents who are slain.
5:45 am
a lot of children who don't have what they need. it is a time for the church to reflect on that and pray on that . >> i think in the palestinian context the canna knights have their gods ball and others. there was child sacrifice was a part of the pagan religion as we saw. so the children do seem to get it in the neck and it is unfortunate. of course this is a tyrant seeking to eliminate the arrival. and the three kings we give their feast later, right? >> you keep saying three kings i have to correct you. we always say three kings there is no evidence of how many kings there were. they had three gifts. people has always said there were three but i just like to say the wisemen. >> wise men from the east. >> that's all we know about them. >> astrologers, astronomers, gentiles, men of great
5:46 am
learning. >> first gentiles in matthews gospel have the shepherds and those people coming to see them as the first to acknowledge the christ. but these are the gentiles a come forward and seek the son of god. >> we get to their feast in the first week in january? what happens after the 28th feast of the holy innocents? >> we go into a little bit of a lull in january 1 while everyone is celebrating new year's day we celebrate the feast of mary the mother of god which used to be the feast of circumcision which is a jewish tradition now we focus more on mary and the fact that she said yes to having jesus. the fact that she was his main nurturer for his growing up years. we don't know much about jesus as early life. so acknowledging that we also in the catholic church use that as the day of prayer for peace and world peace.
5:47 am
>> this feast of mary, this is a global feast at the catholic church? yes. >> the holy day of obligation means what precisely? >> that catholics are required to attend mass on that day. it is a day that we say separate from sunday but it is a special day we say this is an important day you should spend at least an hour in prayer remembering the fees. so our readings are all about on the day mary, all about the people on that day. there is only seven or eight throughout the year. highlight extra special days about that . >> they are clustered, christmas the 25th is a holy day of obligation and thereby sunday is also holy obligation and then january 1? >> exactly a week later . >> this enriches your life as a worshiper and to learn the stories. >> hopefully. >> so, mary the mother of god and known as our mother i take it, and what happens next after
5:48 am
january 1? >> january 2 is the feast of saint basil the great. doctors of the church they are from the fourth century. doctors of the church are those who have a special knowledge and have contributed to the formation of the church there are not many of them. the two of them have to share their feast together. the two of them together has such wonderful influence especially in the east. this is a big feast for our orthodox brothers. >> where were they from? >> northern africa and antioch. >> they were both men but there are doctors of the church that are females? scholars and holy people who have contributed to the literature of the church and theology and the understanding of the church? >> yes special ranking for them . >> gregory and basil the great.
5:49 am
was basil the great a pope? they were bishops in their own right? >> right. let's take a pause and we will take a brief break and come back and learn more about the riches of christmas.
5:50 am
5:51 am
welcome back to mosaic. apparently we have also gone to bethlehem. >> this is what we would call in italy, was raised in italy the first few years. each of my brothers and sisters and i have a full set. it is a nativity scene, a crush. you see them in churches. it was made possible by st. francis of assisi. he had seen it in jerusalem and brought it over to europe. it became very popular. initially there very popular to be live, and i would have a little figurines which are little more rational. i have an entire set with sheep and goats in the wisemen. this little one you're looking at right now is made out of corn husk. it was given to me by a friend
5:52 am
it is kind of a traveling set. that one is good you see the three kings there with mary and jesus and joseph. this is just a commemoration of what we are really celebrating. i occasionally put up a christmas tree. sometimes i do sometimes i don't. i always put up my crush. >> this is italian manufacture? >> it was from northern ellet italy in a from my grandmother. >> i think it's a germanic tradition? >> more pagan or not it's a lovely doubt the star on top so the christmas tree is more of a commercial thing than religious while this is more religious. every church will usually have a crush seen somewhere. >> very nice, very spiritual. >> this year we are celebrating between sunday feast of holy family and the following excuse me epiphany and the feast of the holy family. we are two saints who are
5:53 am
american. >> that's interesting . >> the reason same stay is the day they had died. there is no coincidence here or whatever. they just happen to of died. the first is saint elizabeth ann seton . >> i think we have a slide that has some information . >> she was a fascinating woman. a woman of the early 1800s, had five children, raise episcopalian, white wealthy. her husband was ellen eventually went bankrupt. she had to raise her children alone and lost several of them. during that time when they were in italy she found catholicism. she was helped by some sisters. came back to the united states and found an order, sisters of charity of st. joseph. and they are mainly a teaching and hospital order. people in the bay area would know seton hospital in daly city is named after her. but that was her married name? and died in 1821? she died on january 4 and was
5:54 am
canonized at some point? >> 1975. so it was quite a while. >> this canonization process is lengthy . >> it can be, john, paul and mother teresa were quite short. especially in our modern age things get rushed a bit. >> what happens on the next day? >> on the fifth we have another american he was not american- born he was a bohemian, john newman bishop of philadelphia. he is not some people think of cardinal newman different newman. spelled differently. he was very good at catechism, wrote 2 catechisms in german. he died in the late 1800s. he was a very holy man. >> was he a missionary? >> he was a man who is called to the priesthood and went to his own bishop in europe and
5:55 am
said i want to be a priest. and they said we have too many priests. so we kept writing to people. saying can i be a priest they all turned him down they had too many priests. had to get come all the way to america before someone would accepted to go to seminary and become a priest. he was a very holy man. he was ordained here. >> mid 1800s still mission territory. >> our problem was not too many priest because we had to have circuit priest who went over the whole area. >> also native speaking priest that could serve that community. he would serve a great deal of germanic community in philadelphia. >> a very holy man, his writings are available? >> his homilies, yes . >> this is january 5 this is our last slide. january 6 of the speech of the epiphany. i always felt i learned a tradition i don't know where i learned it, you take down your christmas tree that they can
5:56 am
have a party and you burn your christmas tree. >> that is a nice one. that's a lot of traditions . >> we would cut up the tree, bring it outside and had a little marshmallow roast. >> i don't know if the three kings would appreciate that. >> the idea of giftgiving is from three three kings. frankincense and myrrh. it is a celebration of the awakening of us realizing who christ is. some people put the emphasis on the three kings. it's only in one of our scriptures, others put it emphasis more on the idea of christ with us, christ present. there are so many traditions. especially in europe and the east they really have a lot more traditions. i told you i was italian. we have the tradition of the good which who on january 6 lease hopefully, candy in your shoes. i think there's a little overlap there was santa claus and stockings. this is like said in the east many people would give gifts,
5:57 am
12th night is a play you have a 12 night party because this is the end of the rebels and of the christmas season . >> we have about a minute left. i would like you to sum up for us what you would like people to take away about christmas from this discussion? >> i would say enjoy december 25 if you want to sing happy birthday that's fine. it is a nativity of the lord. first of all the season goes for a lot longer because it is so important. the most important thing is the scripture says, god still loved the world that he sent his only son. we celebrate the nativity but we celebrate the incarnation of christ. that is a celebration we should have for several days, celebration we have through his family his mother, innocent people who slain.12 daysysys because that's truly mas just a
5:58 am
>> laura thank you for being with us and thank you for watching mosaic and enjoy your christmas and all your christmas is. for your christmas is. for
