the coroner to confirm the name of the shooter in this case who is dead and the police said they do not believe he had any relationship with the officer he killed. evidence markers highlight bullet holes in this davis police suv. part of the ongoing investigation into what led up to the shooting at around 7:00 last night. in the hours since officer natalie corona died from gunshot wounds and the suspect shot and killed himself in a house about a block away. the officer corona had only been on the job for two weeks and was responding to a three- vehicle crash at 5th and c. streets. >> it was a routine call. it wasn't anything that raised flags for us. >> reporter: the shooter, who wasn't involved in the crash, opened fire. corona was taken to u.c. davis medical center where she died before 11:00 p.m. the manhunt for her killer spanned downtown davis. >> okay. there was a flash. >> reporter: early this morning a robot went and confirmed that the

suspect was dead. >> from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> reporter: the officer natalie corona was 22 years old. she graduated from the police academy last summer. her father was also in law enforcement. >> everybody is devastated and she just had an amazing personality. she was an amazing person and i think everybody wanted to know her. >> reporter: today neighbors stopped by the shooting scene, including one who is studying to be a police officer herself. >> i have a child at home and it just makes me really -- it doesn't make me consider, but it really puts me on edge. >> reporter: she like others just wanted to pay respect. >> people choose this line of work and they know they're kind of getting into dangerous situations, but you never expect. this. >> reporter: you can see the intersection is still blocked off here, but earlier this morning automatic of the cars, all of the vehicles involved, including that police crui were towed away. it looks like, according to the police lieutenant we spoke

with, none of the officers on t.we're also hearing reports th he may have come wearing a vest- out, but the lieutenant did not confirm anything like that. he said we can expect to get a little more information this afternoon. live in davis, kpix 5. in honor of officer corona, governor newsom says the flags at the state capitol will be flown at half staff. he issued a statement saying he and his wife, quote, join all californians in mourning the loss of this courageous officer and extend our deepest condolences to officer corona's family, friends and co-workers. we'll have continuing coverage of the police officer killing on kpix 5 news at 5:00 and 6:00. to our storm watch now, the bay area's latest round of rain is definitely coming in. it is the first in a series of weather systems. you can see the lens on our

international airport is closing one of its terminals due to the partial government shutdown. it is because security screeners have been calling in sick there at twice the airport's normal rate. the u.s. military withdrawal from syria is underway. a trump administration official saying that the ground equipment is also being removed. out of concern for operational security, the officials say they will not discuss specific timelines, locations or troop movements. cbs news has also learned that it will take three or four months to get the 2,000 american troops home and that operations against isis will continue during the pull-out. a 13-year-olds wisconsin girl missing--13-year-old wisconsin girl missing for months after her parents were murdered has been found alive. jayme closs is recovering.

[ no audio ] >> it was discovered someone had broken into her family's home and fatally shot her parents. for months the police and volunteers searched for the teen. nothing turned up until yesterday after a break in the case from close herself. -- from jayme closs herself. >> it was literally like seeing a ghost because we have seen the billboards and there she is in my kitchen. >> a man says he heard pounding on his door and when he opened it, he was shocked to see jayme closs. she was found in a wisconsin town about 70 miles from her home. authorities arrested 21-year- old jake patterson minutes after they found the girl. more bay area news, at least two cars and carport went up in flame this is morning in east oakland. oakland firsts tweeting out this photo. the fire was reported just before 4:00 a.m. at an apartment complex on mabel avenue. the crews were able to knock it down quickly no units damaged. it is unclear how the fire started. >> teachers in the bay area joined a statewide educators rally today in solidarity with at least 35,000 los angeles with the district. nt kpix 5 has more from san jose.

>> reporter: what does a demonstration here in san jose veat is happening in oakland or even los angeles? the teachers here say everything. you probably noticed an unusual sight during drop-off at your kids' school this morning, teachers demonstrating before class. it is called red for ed. it is a wave of teacher activism rolling from the east coast through the midwest and now arriving in california. from berkeley to rancho, concord to santa monica, these teachers are demonstrating in support of united teachers of los angeles, one of the largest unions in the state, along with the oakland educators' association. both oakland and los angeles are battling the state and their districts for pay raises, smaller class sizes, and more counselors and nurses. oakland has been negotiating their contract for two years. >> it puts on notice the district that we know what is right. we have seening the budget. we know that there is money.

san jose, one of the more milder spots there. now let's show you what you can expect as we take you through the afternoon. we're going to see increasing rain and into the evening. a break for tomorrow between storms for your saturday and then more storms sunday into next week with the very active weather pattern, for sure. satellite and radar view as we are tracking this weather system that is bringing the rain for us today. so timing it out for you on future cast, stopping the clock at 3:00 p.m. you see that light to moderate rain lighting up our radar screen. it is going to be a wet evening commute. be prepared. this is stopping the clock on future cast at 6:00 p.m. as we go through tomorrow, we are going to catch a break, so we are looking at maybe some peeks of some sunshine, but mainly cloudy. as we go through sunday, we're seeing increasing rain for sunday afternoon into sunday night. and then more rain behind that pretty much every day next week. future cast wind gusts, especially on the coast, we are going to see the windses pick
