this is the "cbs overnight news." welcome to the overnight news. the longest partial government shutdown in history is entering day 25 with no end in sight. he rejected a plan to reopen the government but the president also ruled out declaring a national emergency and ordering the army to build a wall. meanwhile there is trouble at the airports. security screeners are among the 800,000 federal workers not being paid and a growing number are deciding to stay home. before leaving for new orleans, president trump told reporters he has, for the time being, shelved the threat of declaring a national emergency on the border.

jayme's parents. >> with two counts of first degree intentional homicide. >> reporter: jake patterson briefly appeared havau video link charged with two counts of burglary, kidnapping and the murder of jayme -- the saga was revealed through investigative interviews and laid out in the criminal complaint. on october 15th, patterson shot foreign minister jayme's father in the head in the middle of the night with a shutgon. she and her mom were hiding in a bathroom. she was in a bear hug with her mother who was on the phone with 911. patterson forced her to tape jayme's hands and shot her. he placed jayme in the trunk of his car.

jayme's vanished without a traus. today the complaint answered how he targeted her. he saw her getting off a school bus after quitting his job at a local cheese shop. he spent weeks planning the kidnapping. he stated he drove by jayme's house twiesz, shaved her head and showered to prevent leaving dna. the community searched for near elathree months, not knowing jayme's was just 60 miles away. the complaint says jaimtates -- threatened bad things would happen if she tried to escape but that's exactly what she did thursday. after patterson left the home, jayme's put on a pair of shoeses on the wrong feet and left the house.

>> i have a young lady at house and she says her name is jayme closs. that neighbor was jaime nutter who stumbled across jayme. >> she said he killed my parents. i want to go home. help me. >> reporter: police pulled over patterson's vehicle which can according to the report he told them i know what this is about. i did it. when you have something like this where there's a confession within the criminal complaint, how does it impact the case? >> there's not much speculation according to the criminal complaint drafted by a very good district attorn ea. but you have to still investigate, look at it, you have to give options to your client. >> reporter: patterson is being held on $5 million bail. his next court date is february

this is the "cbs overnight news." charges have been filed in a double murder and kidnapping in wisconsin. peterson is charged with two counts of first degree intentional homicide, kidnapping and burglary. although the small town was realing over the senseless murders, people continued to hold out hope jayme would be found. >> found at the end of my driveway and i saw a young woman who appeared to be in distress. she was probably about 10 or 12 feet from me saying i need help. all i need is whoever this child

is she's in trouble. because it was 19 or 20 degrees outside and she only had a sweat shirt on and maybe black leggings and i thought she was in her slippers. so i felt she left wherever she had been in a hurry. so i click in and she just sort of fell into me and said i'm jayme and i said i know. >> did you recognize her right away? >> right away because her picture cans are everywhere. and i knew what was going through my head is i know your circumstances, what happened to you, i know the person you're with is potentially dangerous. my only responsibility is to get you to a safe place. >> why didn't you talk her to your house? >> too close to where the alleg alleged perpetrator lives. his property touches the back of

ours. >> but you didn't know that was the perpetrator at that time? >> she told me that's where she came from. you only have one door, it faces the woods. you don't see the road. >> did you know this cabin? >> she pointed to it because you can sort of see it from where we were. >> so you knew exactly where that was because it is against your property? so you're thinking if he's following you, it's just the three of you. >> and all of that is going through my head and she needs to be in a safe place. and i didn't want her to know i thought my place isn't calm. because i wanted her to be calm. safety, safety, safety. that's what we're trained in social work. i was not calm inside. so i did not want her to know that. i just practiced all my skills.

don't ask her any questions. first all of where did you come can from and i said is she home? and she said no. i said is she in a car? and i said what can color is it? because i wanted to have some other plan in my head. >> reporter: it's that quick thinking that helped bring jayme home to a family overcome with gratitude. nutter and her aunt met for the first time on sunday. >> i just wanted to meet you. you did everything so right. >> and you got to meet the family? >> it was wonderful. honestly i feel privileged ib had this little piece of the puzzle of finding jayme. >> really she is the hero because she escaped and really she ran into you first and thank goodness you're a good person.

>> that was my job that day was to dust off your child protection skills and make sure you got this kid to safety. i just wanted her to know she's going to be okay. no matter what i did, that kid is going to be safe. with two members of the family, they described how they handled the death of her parents and they never gave up hope she would be found. >> reporter: as exciting and exhilarating as this is there's another painful part that your brother in law, your sister, your aunt, is no longer with us. how do you handle those two thoughts at the same time? >> we have back burnered their death, kind of how i've done it in my head. it's like they were murdered and it was shocking and horrible and hideous and -- but we had this little girl we couldn't find. we kind of said as horrible as that is, we got to find her and

we're going to get her and i think that's partly why we didn't quit looking for her because for them too. it was like we will find heir. you know. >> there's a lot of questions that -- the big question is where did he pick her out from target? was it a picture? did you see her somewhere in public? >> was she your obsession? where did this come from? >> and he had no connection to the family. i'm sure you have racked your guains did anybody know this y? >> he'll be making his first appearance in cort. do you all plan to go there? >> we'll be there. >> reporter: why do you all want to go? >> justice. we'll make sure. i will be at every one. >> reporter: what will you thin

we'll do heir hair -- >> after hours. >> i mean people are just giving and giving and giving. it's just incredible. >> reporter: you know the family members told us the first thing they wanted to do is get her room ready. a headboard with shelves because they knew she would like that. her favorite color is blue so there's lots of blue in the room. and she loves butterflies. they symbolize to them rebirth. this tight knit community of barren, wisconsin is banding together to welcome jayme back. signs and billboards across the town say welcome home, jayme. praise god. we spoke to several people to get their reaction to her

surprise and improbable retrp. why did you participate in the search? >> it was so tragic and sad. it's a small community and those people know each other. and we've only lived here about two years. and it was just heart breaking. >> reporter: did you think it would turn out this way? >> you know i didn't know. we hoped. we prayed for jayme and we hoped. low how do you know. it was so bizarre and so scary. >> reporter: what do you have to say? thyit arsry an ndary. rseai pthings like that don't happen around here. i'm thankful everyone came together, even you, you know. but it was scare ea. could be anybody's child, anybody's parents. and i am so thankful she's home. welcome to our lipton tea factory. here we work together with nature.

mexican border and had just 150 to go. so she brushed aside nosy nancy's concern. >> and that's the last i saw of her. >> reporter: for the next seven nights nancy grew increasingly restless. she knew it was petty late in the season to walk that final stretch without snow shoes and when she read the forecast for two feet of snow in the mountains, nancy went full-on mother hen. >> i was really stressed out. i felt compelled i needed to get help for her. >> i'm not having an emergency. i'm calling about a hiker who is probably at risk. >> reporter: the authorities here don't go missing for people who aren't missing. this hiker hadn't put out a distress call or missed a check point and yet somehow nancy convinced them her hunch was an edge kaeted one.

so they went searching. the snohomish county sheriff's department went searching where nancy suggested and that's where they spotted her frost bit within barely a day to live. the rescue crew says nancy saved kathrina's life. >> definitely without a doubt. i'll think of her as a hero for therist of my life. >> reporter: nancy is sleeping much bter now. she invited kathrina to stay with her for a few days before her flight to germany and as for cat ro kathrina, nancy rescued her in more ways than one. she says the whole reason she went on this hike was she gave up. >> come to america. eporter:eed faith america or just find your nearest mom.
