i am candi scholl. it is only going to get more intense. you can see the bridge making for a wet drive really all over the bay area. hea live look in san francisco's financial district. a wet reride. i let's take a live look across our network cameras. you can see the raindrops on the lenses, and heavy rains do to follow. >> mary lee is tracking the wind and rain. it looks like it is really going to get crazy this afternoon. that's right. we are tracking and powerful pacific cold front that will bring heavy rain and even stronger when and you can even see lightning strikes off the shore. thunderstorms embedded in all of this. first, the north bay with heavy rain. we had some lightning strikes along the coast and you can see down to san francisco,

that lightning strike just off shore just to the west of daly city. you may have heard that rumble of thunder or sing the lightning strikes out there. we are looking at heavy rain across the east bay. concord, walnut creek as well as down across the peninsula, san bruno down to san mateo. as well as from the south, like rains. more of this rain is all the way. that pacific cold front is going to push through as we go through the rest of the afternoon and for tonight. we will time it out for what you can expect because we do have a flash flood watch in effect this afrnoon. we have wind advisories as well as a high wind warning. we will time it out for you. in lafayette, an old oak tree never stood a chance against these strong winds in soggy ground. this came crashing down this morning at withers avenue and

pleasant hill road. crews were there chopping it up just a short time ago. the property owner says it is lucky that the tree did not fall earlier because there are usually cars lined up on that street taking kids to school. >> bumper-to-bumper cars. >> if this had happened in our earlier, it would've been a lot sadder story. >> reporter: the property owner says when the tree toppled over, it sounded like thunder and shook her entire house. toledo traffic was slow going after a mudslide on 101 just after spencer avenue. the saturated hillside gave way this morning right during the commute. it took about 90 minutes to clear away the mud and debris. crews are also evaluating trees on the hill the risk of falling. before the rain gets really bad this afternoon, residents can still come up with some sandbags to protect their homes. one is open until 3:30 this afternoon.

>> we have a location for the residence to fill up their own sandbags. protect their homes. a lot of times, we are out in the field. >> another spot to fill the sandbags in sausalito, the bayside mlk junior is open 24 hours. we had enough quick tilting some people out of bed this morning. >> that's right, around 4:45 this morning near highway 114 and 34 meet up. lots of unanswered questions because of the big shutdown in washington. >> reporter: i am here at the epicenter of the earthquake heading right in the parking lot of the bensley school. thankfully, they had zero damage. it was a 3.4 magnitude, about 7 miles underground. beyond that, there is not much else i can tell you.

that is because the office is closed because of the government shutdown. a seismologist is almost always available after an earthquake but today, all he got was this outgoing message. >> we are prohibited from conducting work as federal employees including returning emails until further notice. >> what are we left to do? >> reporter: that is a great question, i don't know. >> it is really unfortunate. >> i assume there is someone around here keeping track. >> reporter: that someone is peggy salmon at the ice mileage around -- >> we are not taking over the big job they have which is to review the earthquakes. >> the automated systems are still working even though no one was maintaining it.

>> we have been really lucky. >> reporter: in piedmont, kpix 5 news. in san francisco, six people including a child and a firefighter were hurt in a fire that started around midnight in the under mission district. firefighters had trouble fighting the flames because there was so much stuff inside the building walking access. >> one occupant they fell behind the front door, the engine operator did a great job on the second floor and got the second person out. there's a lot of others in the backyard where we found six more occupants and we got them out. >> of those injured, two are in critical and three more are in serious condition.

nearly 2 dozen people were displaced by that fire. and early-morning accident left the driver of a garbage truck dead. firefighters and investigators surrounding that blue garbage truck. police say the driver hit a number of parked cars on skyline boulevard around 6:15 this morning. investigators are still trying to figure out what caused this crash. >> right now, they are continuing their investigation to determine what the cause the driver to have an accident. >> police detectives and osha, police are investigating this accident. nancy pelosi has a request for president trump and congressional leaders say they will cancel the upcoming martin luther king jr. recess unless a deal on border security is reached. >> reporter: house speaker, nancy pelosi, said president

miles an hour on west isle 50 when it lost control and spun into the eastbound lanes hitting a subaru. the driver of the volvo was killed. a passenger and baby also died after being ejected from the vehicle. the driver of the subaru was taken to the hospital with major injuries. the fremont city council voted unanimously tuesday to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour. that change would take effect by 2020 and by 2021 for those with fewer than 25 employees. california's minimum wage will increase to $15 an hour by 2020 to four large businesses and by 2023 for small businesses. the chariot said it would stop operation but the mayor saw it as an opportunity offering jobs to nearly 300

we are talking a lot of rain and a lot of wind. you can see some heavy rain especially up around the north bay. santa rosa, it is pouring. richmond, we have some lightning strikes offshore and over in vernice, you may have heard that rumble of thunder. you can see that heavy rain from the golden gate into san francisco and across the bay bridge. as we had farther east from walnut creek, concorde, alamo, san ramon and down across the peninsula, check out the lightning strikes. and down near redwood terrace, you can see that lightning strike so active weather for sure that will continue as we head into the afternoon and for tonight. temperatures are definitely on the mild side. 60 in concorde as well as san jose. livermore, mid-50s. santa rosa coming in at 53. we will see the winds kick up.

20 in mountain view as well as san jose, 30 mile an hour winds sustained out of the south, southeast. looking at 23 in downtown san francisco. so a wind advisory begins for the entire bay area, gusting up to 50 miles an hour. a high wind warning up to 60 miles an hour and this all kicks in at 11:00 today. a flash flood watch also for the entire region. we are talking about the potential for road and highway fighting because of all of the rain we had yesterday combined with the heavy rain today. futurecast, as we take into the afternoon, we will see heavy rain at times. here we are at 7:00 p.m. and this is the actual cold front and when it moves through your area, we will see a burst of heavy rain as well as the

stronger winds. and there you go with that line of heavy rain. this is at 8:00 p.m. and pushing across the rest of the bay area by 10:00 p.m. we are watching it very closely for you and we will see some shower is behind the front for tomorrow. rainfall from 3 to 5 inches. up to 4 inches for the peninsula. an inch and a half for the south bay. our sunset at 5:15. here is your 7-day forecast. rainy, windy as well as isolated thunderstorms with this strong storm, likely the strongest storm of the season, so far. catching a break for friday and saturday, showers on sunday and high pressure will build in with plenty of sunshine by early next week. >> we will keep an eye on it and it will be an exciting evening around here. >> with this storm expected to back such a punch, we will have you early tomorrow morning ahead of your thursday morning commute.

woman was rescued. it happened monday just outside of chicago. the car never stood a chance by two good samaritans were in the right place at the right time. they got out of their cars and jumped into action pulling the 96-year-old to safety. >> she didn't know what happened. >> we were like, we've got to get out of here. >> the woman couldn't walk without hurricane so the men carried her to safety. she spent the night at the hospital but now, she is back home with her family. check out this amazing site on the east coast. this is nearly a perfect disk of ice forming and he estimates the disk is about 100 yards across and spending in a counterclockwise direction.
