good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. tens of millions of americans are bracing for a coast-to-coast storm that will bring severe winter weather over the next few days. it's already turned deadly out west. at least six people were killed in california after days of torrential rains. roads flooded in malibu and other places. the storm downed trees and sent massive boulders tumbling down hillsides. one woman was hit by a boulder while she was hiking. areas scorched by recent wildfires were evacuated. in the mountains, nearly five feet of snow fell. that same storm system is headed east. eric fisher, chief meteorologist at wbz, is tracking it. this is the first true coast-to-coast storm that we've had this winter season. it's already produced big snow totals in california, across the sierra, lowland rain. tracking it across the country, the midwest into the northeast, lots of winter storm watches and warnings in place.
4:02 am
redeveloping on the other side of the rockies. we call that lee side cyclogenesis. we'll see that snow spreading through the midwest friday into saturday morning. then we'll track that heavy rain and snow off to the east as we head into saturday night and sunday with the heaviest of the snow across interior sections of the northeast. this moves off shore as we head into sunday night. a wide swath of snow from the dakotas down across chicago area, detroit, and there you see the bigger amounts. right now it looks like a broad area of over a foot of snow. up to two feet or more possible from central new york up through central new england. that's where we'll see the biggest amounts overall and a lot of powder with tons of cold air. another major hazard with this storm, the little leading edge of some of the warmer air punching in creates a corridor of freezing rain and sleet. that can cause power outages and damage. we're watching the zone essentially from eastern p.a. up through northern new jersey, connecticut to massachusetts and rhode island in particular. we could see over a quarter inch of freezing rain. that would start to lead to some of the damage and power outages.
4:03 am
a lot of cold following the storm. these are the windchill values on sunday morning. 41 below 0 in international falls. the bitter air moves across the northeast and mid-atlantic states, especially as we head into monday. everything that falls, freezing up like a rocket. a very cold martin luther king jr. day. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. the partial government shutdown is now a month old. the battle over the impasse has turned into a power play between president trump and nancy pelosi. neither appears to be giving in. marc liverman is here in new york with the latest on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. both sides are digging in, and it's now day 28 of the longest partial government shutdown in u.s. history. if this isn't resolved by tuesday, most of the three quarters of a million federal workers will miss another paycheck. a day after nancy pelosi threatened to derail the state of the union, president trump

"it would be better if you were in washington with me negotiating the showdown." >> i think the actions of the president were petty. >> reporter: the move comes less than a month after president trump made his own overseas visit to u.s. troops. >> whatever it takes. we're going to have a wall. we're going to have safety. >> reporter: neither side has shown readiness to compromise over border wall funding to end the partial government shutdown.
