the l.a. rams and the new england patriots are in atlanta, for the first of many events for the big game this sunday. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters right here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. some of the coldest weather in decades is set to hit the midwest today and the temperatures are life-threatening. windchills in some areas to plunge to 47 degrees below zero. and the dangerous cold is sticking around for days. michigan governor declared a state of emergency. chief meteorologist from wjdz has what to expect. >> well, the arctic air is on the move it will grip the midwest, tuesday, wednesday, into thursday and possibly friday. the problem with this arctic air, it is slow. it's like syrup. and it does not want to move out rather quickly.

windchills that we're concerned about. this cold air mass, by the way, the midwest has not like this s. the windchill is expected to drop to 50 below for wednesday morning and the problem with this arctic air, it will slowly move, but then move across the northeast late wednesday into thursday. and friday. with that cold air moving all the way across the gulf coast, there are winter storm warnings in mississippi, alabama and northern parts of georgia, believe it or not, to the north of atlanta, and then also some additional winter storm warnings to the north of boston and to the north of new york. so going throughout your tuesday into wednesday, several inches of snow expected from jackson to birmingham. folks that are going early for the super bowl in atlanta could pick up maybe an inch of snow. and that snow will be tracking tuesday into wednesday, across the northeast. about an inch in new york, boston and washington, d.c. but then some higher totals to

the northwest of the boston area. i'm meteorologist drew bourgoyne for cbs news. president trump's former campaign adviser roger stone will appear before a federal judge today. stone faces charges that he obstructions an investigation into russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign. marc liverman is here with more on what stone is saying publicly before his court hearing. marc, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. roger stone has been speaking to the media basically nonstop since he was arrested on friday. the message that he's putting out there that he's not guilty but that's not what special counsel robert mueller says. >> reporter: former trump campaign adviser roger stone faces prison time, but you wouldn't know it when he arrived in washington for his arraignment monday. >> it's not a bad day. >> reporter: late last week, stone was indicted on lying, obstruction and witness tampering. it alleges he was in contact with several trump campaign officials about wikileaks

release of hacked democratic e-mails. last night on fox news's hannity show, stone insisted he's done nothing wrong. >> there is no russian collusion. >> i had no collaboration with wikileaks. they want to silence me because i want to stand up for donald trump. >> reporter: sarah sanders was asked whether stone, the sixth trump aide reds a threat to the presidency. >> the more this goes on, the more and more we see none of these things have anything to do with the president. >> reporter: when asked whether the president would pardon stone, sanders would not offer a definitive no. she said, quote, i'm not going to get into hypotheticals that are just ridiculous. and yesterday acting attorney general matt whitaker said the special probe and he's also been fully briefed on the investigation. >> marc liverman in new york. thanks a lot, marc. president trump accepted a

new date of february 5th to give his state of the union speech. house speaker nancy pelosi invited president trump to give his address next tuesday. he was originally scheduled to give the speech today, but pelosi postponed it due to the partial government shutdown. margaret brennan will sit down with the president for a wide-ranging interview. yotch it he on cbs er bowliii. and this morning, china's government called on washington to stop the unreasonable crackdown of a chinese tech company huawei. yesterday, the justice department announced indictments on 23 departments of the company. from t-mobile and obstructing justice. >> in 2012, huawei began a concerted effort to steal information about a robot secretly taking photos of the robot, measuring it. and even stealing it -- stealing a piece of it. >> a case filed in new york

alleges huawei committed wire and bank fraud in violations of u.s. sanctions against iran. the new york indictment seeks the extradition of huawei's chief financial officer meng wanzhou from canada. where she was arrested last december and later released on bail. today, china called on washington to withdraw the extradition request. the u.s. is imposing sanctions on venezuela's state-owned oil companies and urging the military to accept a peaceful transfer of power to the interim president. violent protests erupted in recent weeks over the country's failing economy. demonstrators demanded president nicolas maduro step down. national security adviser john bolton said yesterday that maduro and his allies could no longer meet the assets of the venezuelan people. four houston police officers were shot while serving a drug-related search warrant. two of them, the most seriously hurt are in serious but critical condition after being shot in the neck yesterday.

one is 50 years old. on the force for more than half his life. the other is a senior police officer with more experience, and he chose to be with his team in the line of fire, despite being shot on duty several times before. >> most people would call it a day after being shot and surviving. this man is 54 years old. he's a case agent on this case. and he was there in the front line. >> two others injured will go home tomorrow. two suspects were shot and killed by return gunfire from officers. the l.a. rams and the new england patriots are preparing to battle on super bowl sunday. but ahead of the big game, both teams have to face off with reporters. moa mola lenghi is in atlanta with an opening party kickoff last night. mola, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. yeah, weeks of festivities and super bowl parties kicked off in atlanta with opening night. a media frenzy as you describe it that's really become a

national spectacle. super bowl's opening night included cheerleaders, crowds and one very young reporter. they also turned to interviewing members of the new england patriots and the los angeles rams. the quarterbacks were very popular especially the legendary tom brady back for his ninth appearance in the big game. >> you know, you're playing football in front of the whole world. if you can't get excited about that, you probably don't have a heartbeat. >> reporter: meanwhile jared goff is making his first super bowl start. >> you just want to get it over with. >> reporter: rams defensive tackle michael brockers is ready to go. anything surprise you about this week? >> probably how relaxed we are. just as far as, yeah, we understand it's our first time being here. but for the most part, we always believed we were supposed to be here, you know. >> reporter: some players escaped from the annual media frenzy by playing a different game besides football.

this event seems to get bigger and brighter every year. it's now a nationally broadcast event and there are more fans here than ever before. patriots fans are ready for another win. >> come on, winning doesn't get old. >> reporter: while rams supporters think they have the upper hand. >> sean mcvay he's amazing. todd gurley, amazing. jared goff, amazing. >> reporter: it began with the team captains, head coaches and the coveted lombardi trophy which both teams will be battling for on sunday. it's still very early in super bowl week, obviously but based on what we saw yesterday and last night, new england appears to have a slight advantage, a little edge in terms of fan turnout. we've seen a lot more pats fans than rams fans. anne-marie, it's early, and not to mention rams fans have much farther to travel. >> very true. mola lenghi in atlanta, thanks a lot, mola. and you can watch super bowl liii on sunday right here on cbs.
