♪ good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. for millions in the midwest, the cold weather is making it dangerous to be outside. the temperature in chicago this morning is expected to plue to minus 50 degrees. the blast of arctic air is being blamed for at least five deaths across five states, and even the u.s. postal service has suspended delivery in the region. charlie de mar of our chicago station wbbm has more on the frigid weather. >> reporter: the dangerous freeze is slamming the midwest with weather cold enough to kill. >> it is treacherous. >> reporter: from chicago to sioux falls and so many points in between, windchill temperatures are forecast to plunge to 30, 40, 50, and even 60 below zero. >> it's not something you absolutely need, we would advise to stay home for your safety and those that are out and about having to be out in the weather. >> reporter: in downtown duluth, minnesota, where windchills hit elowtues cit wogaut haners.

>> this is just really cold. >> reporter: duluth mail carrier dave mayhew says in weather like this he wears several pairs of gloves, pants, and hats. the postal service has suspended wednesday mail delivery in several states including minnesota because of the cold. here in chicago, residents are bracing for more windchill and record-breaking lows where it will feel colder than parts of antarctica. across the city, chicago city buses are being called into service as homeless shelters. michigan state university canceled classes for wednesday, as did countless school districts around the region. charlie de mar for cbs news, chicago. this dangerous weather is sticking around for a few days. chief meteorologist drew burgoyne from our milwaukee affiliate wdjt has more on that. >> reporter: that arctic air has arrived, and it is sitting and parking over the midwest. temperatures this morning in many spots close to 20 below in milwaukee, chicago, minneapolis,

23 below. and don't expect a major warmup. notice the cold air just does not want to move. highs throughout the day basically anywhere from 0 to 12 below from milwaukee to chicago, minneapolis at 16 below. looking for a high at 5 below in indianapolis. let's get real. with that wind, that's the biggest concern. there are windchill warnings all throughout the midwest. milwaukee this morning including chicago, minneapolis feeling close to 50 below. extremely cold. and we're not going to see a whole lot of improvement throughout the course of the afternoon. what you'll notice, that cold air is set to slide across the northeast so it does look like on thursday high temperatures throughout the northeast will be in the teens with lows in the single digits. that cold will be moving in that direction. the lake-effect snow machine will be going on and off throughout the great lakes today. and then additional snow showers moving throughout boston and new york, maybe a quick inch there. some higher totals throughout maine, throughout new england, with burlington over two inches

of snow. if you're wondering about atlanta, people getting ready for the super bowl, next couple of days in the 40s. at least you don't have to deal with any winter weather. i'm meteorologist drew burgoyne for cbs news. negotiations to avoid another government shutdown. kickoff today on capitol hill. house and senate lawmakers are hoping to reach an agreement on a homeland security spending bill. the president is demanding money for a wall along the u.s.-mexico border. democratic leaders maintain they will not support funding for that wall. the trump administration launched an effort to make asylum seekers wait in mexico while their cases wind through u.s. immigration courts. the policy change comes despite reservations from the mexican government. yesterday the u.s. returned one asylum seeker to mexico. a man from honduras. the launch is limited to the nation's busiest border crossing in san diego. the government, however, hopes to expand it to other crossings. u.s. intelligence officials

are disputing president trump's claims that isis has been defeated and that north korea is no longer a threat. the heads of top agencies went before congress yesterday and presented conflicting assessments of multiple foreign policy issues. nancy cordes has more. >> we have won against isis. we've beaten them. >> reporter: that was president trump just last month. >> call this to order -- >> reporter: his handpicked intelligence team said he's wrong. >> isis will continue to be a threat to the united states. >> they still command thousands of fighters in iraq and syria. >> reporter: and it wasn't just isis. cia director gina haspel and director of national intelligence dan coates contradicted the presi view oalmost every major global hot spot. >> the iran deal is defective at its core. >>th they're in compliance. >> reporter: take north korea

which president trump insists is no longer a nuclear threat. >> that problem is largely solved -- >> reporter: his advisers said the opposite -- >> we currently assess that north korea will seek to retain its wmd capabilities. >> reporter: notably at this hearing on worldwide threats, they barely even mentioned illegal immigration which mr. trump insists is the greatest threat of all. >> thousands more lives will be lost if we don't act right now. >> reporter: republican leaders downplayed the discrepancies. does it trouble you that the president appears to be so out of step with his own advisers when it comes to foreign threats? >> i didn't really follow the testimony, so i don't have any observation. >> reporter: but leader mcconnell himself broke with mr. trump, urging him not to withdraw from syria even if troops have retaken most isis

territory. >> we've seen the downsides of telling the enemy they can wait us out, we'll be gone on a date certain. >> reporter: the intelligence officials also warned that russia and china are more aligned than they have been since the 1950s, and that their global influence is expanding. at the same time, they said u.s. allies are pulling away from us in response to america's new approach to security and trade. nancy cordes, cbs news, capitol hill. the fbi says it found no motive in the 2017 las vegas mass shooting. it left 58 people dead and nearly 900 injured. stephen paddock opened fire from a highrise casino hotel window. investigators found no evidence that any ideological or political belief may have motivated the shooting. the 64-year-old killed himself after the massacre. it was the deadliest mass shooting in modern u.s. history. and while super bowl fans are gathering in atlanta for the big game, so are thousands of

♪ the music world is mourning the death of grammy-winning r&b singer james ingram. his longtime friend and creative partner, debbie allen, confirmed his death yesterday. ingram was the smooth, soulful voice behind such hits as "just once" and "i don't have the heart." he had successful collaborations with linda ronstadt, barry white and dolly parton and co-wrote michael jackson's song "pyt" with jones. james ingram was 66. the measles has, merged in a new -- has emerged in a new state, and an actor may be the victim of a hate crime on the "morning newsstand". reporting police are investigating an assault on jussie smollett from "empire." two masked men approached him as he was walking early yesterday near the chicago river downtown. they allegedly yelled racial and homophobic slurs, hit him in the face, poured an unknown chemical substance on him, and wrapped a rope around his neck. smollett is black and openly gay. police are treating it as a possible hate crime. "the new york times" reports a mother's fatal fall on the stairs of a new york subway station has brought renewed calls to make the south bay -- make the subway system more accessible. the 22-year-old connecticut woman was carrying her 1-year-old daughter in a stroller monday when she fell down the stairs and on to the subway platform. she died. her daughter is okay. there was no elevator at that station, and only about a quarter of the system's 472 stations have elevators, and they are often out of order. "the atlanta journal constitution" says georgia health officials have confirmed three cases of measles in an atlanta family.

no additional information was released about the family except that none had been vaccinated. concern about measles has increased amid an outbreak in oregon and washington state that has sickened dozens. doctors have advised parents to vaccinate their children. and "usa today" says a 14-year-old arizona high school student discovered the group facetime bug more than a week ago, and his mother tried to warn apple about it. the bug lets callers eavesdrop on someone else's conversation even before that person answers the call. grant thompson says that he found the bug by accident while calling friends to play the game "fortnite." >> i was looking on my x box and heard the notification of someone joining the facetime. i was like, hey, nathan, what's up. he was confused at first like, grant -- like, how can you hear me? >> thompson's mother said she tried contacting apple through social media, a letter, phone calls, and emails. she says that she got an e-mail

on the cbs "money watch," better than expected earnings for apple, and trouble for the creator of the "fearless girl" statue. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with those stories and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. asian markets finished mixed ahead of trade talks between the u.s. and china today in washington. u.s. indices were also mixed yesterday. tech and media stocks tumbled, but a rebound in industrial companies helped lift blue chips on wall street. the dow rose 51 points tuesday. the s&p 500 shed three, and the nasdaq lost 57. apple posted a quarterly sales decline for the first time in more than a decade. the tech giant said yesterday iphone sales fell 15% in the last quarter of 2018 from the same quarter the year before. the drop in the sales of the company's star product knocked first-quarter profit to below

$20 billion, but that still beat wall street expectations. revenue for the company's services segment marked a 19% increase last year. its stock jumped in after-hour trading. perdue foods is recalling its refrigerated fun shapes chicken breast nuggets. the company says it failed to list a dairy allergen warning on the packaging. the recall does not include any frozen fully cooked chicken nuggets. about 16,000 pounds is being recalled in 13 states and washington, d.c. these items have a "use by" date of march 11th, 2019. pg&e filed for bankruptcy protection, a move that could prove costly to wildfire victims and customers. the nation's largest utility company is facing potential lawsuits over california's wildfires. yesterday's filing puts the lawsuits on hold. that could lead to victims getting less money and customers seeing higher bills. pg&e is linked to a series of wildfires in california including november's camp fire

♪ ♪ i don't believe it's true the band maroon 5 apparently likes to sing more than it likes to talk. it canceled a news conference to discuss its halftime performance at sunday's super bowl. musical acts in the past have talked to reporters. maroon 5 will be joined by big boi and travis scott during the halftime show, and the band didn't give a reason for canceling the news conference. and the los angeles rams cheerleaders will be making history at the super bowl. for the first time ever, there will be male cheerleaders. professional dancers quinton peron and napoleon jinnies will help cheer on the rams. in today's nfl, cheerleaders are often professional dancers. 300 people competed to cheer for the rams last year, and two were men. >> the whole world, especially the world of entertainment, in a place of being open, and if you can do the job, why not?

calls from him. >> no. >> reporter: an iranian judicial official said white is being sued by a private plaintiff, referring to a complaint by a citizen, not the government. the official did not rule out possible security-related charges. iran has incarcerated other americans on charges of espionage which they have denied. he's not a spy? >> no, he's not a spy. not at all. >> reporter: white wants the government to negotiate with iran for his son's release. and mike pompeo told "face the nation" the u.s. is using every cool in its arsenal to free americans detained all over the world. >> i think my son's life is worth a lot. it's worth a lot to me. >> reporter: if you could tell michael anything right now, what would it be? >> i'd tell him i love him, and i'm praying for him. that's what i'd tell him. you know, and to stay strong. please stay strong. >> reporter: white wants a representative from the swiss government which looks after u.s. interests in iran to visit her son in prison. we reached out to the state department to see if that's
