inside and watch super bowl liii right here. cbs this morning will be up next. have a great day everyone. here's a live look at atlanta, georgia at the mercedes-benz stadium with the patriots and rams kicking off super bowl liii. good morning to our viewers in the west. it's friday, february 1st, 2019. welcome to "cbs this morning." tens of millions in the midwest and northeast suffer through one more day of extreme cold. we have the forecast to the p t polar vortex and the warm-up that will see temperatures in some areas swing 80 degrees. military academy assaults has more than doubled in the last four years with half the female students saying they've been harassed. we'll look at why the number of cases continues to rise despite changes put in place after our reporting. we're kick off football's biggest weekend of the year. we'll hear from both starting quarterbacks in super bowl liii

across the country next week. adriana diaz is in chicago where the cold weather brokerecord good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the peak of the polar vortex has passed over the midwest but it is still struggling to get it's off the single digits here. there was another dusting of show in chicago overnight to the already frozen ground and icy waterways. while people are still digging out and dealing with the heavy doses of snow and cold across parts of the northeast, in the midwest, others are working through the tail end of the polar vortex. the crunching of thick ice is music to the ears of the crew of fireboat engine 2, the chicago fire department's icebreaker. how thick is the ice? >> the thickest we went through today is about a foot. >> reporter: wow, and that's ice that was broken yesterday? >> yes. it had been broken but it refroze. >> reporter: pilot bob lung said

this is a necessary process to stop people from walking on the frozen chicago river and clear a path for other boats. as the thaw begins, other problems with likely to pop up like ice jams in rivers that raise the risk of flooding. or water main breaks like this one in chicago. from days of subzero temperatures. in milwaukee county, police are investigating two additional deaths that might be connected to the extreme cold. a 62-year-old man was found frozen in his backyard thursday. and on wednesday, a 38-year-old woman died in an unheated apartment. >> i feel kind of in shock knowing a lady died upstairs, that she just froze to death. >> reporter: there's more below freezing temperatures expected next week here in the midwest and in the northeast. but if there's any good news, it's not expected to be as cold as this week's polar vortex. >> adriana, thank you, we can

only hope. warming temperatures across the midwest and northeast will reach as high as the mid-50s this weekend. lonnie quinn, chief weathercaster for our new york station wcbs tv, show us the dramatic change with these yo-yoing temperatures. >> it is some crazy stuff. good morning, everybody. current temperatures outside. you notice something, you don't see as many negative numbers. there are a couple out there. chicago out there is 7 degrees. we heard from adriana there, there's going to be a huge warm-up in chicago. sunday, almost 50, 48. this could be the biggest story. fort wayne, indiana, wednesday, you were 13 degrees below zero. set a record low temperature. sunday, you could possibly set a record high temperature. you'd have to get up to 58. we're forecasting 55. this becomes the big story. the next storm system moving'r rain. coastal gusts could be up to

hurricane strength. mudslides, flooding. it's going to be a big concern. that goes inland and dumps anywhere from 3 to 6 feet of snow in the sierra. they just finished up with a storm that gave them 3 feet. we'll stay on top of everything. >> thank you so much, lonnie. a disturbing new pentagon report indicates sexual assault at three prestigious u.s. military academies spiked 50% in the past school year. an estimated 747 cadets told an anonymous survey they were sexually assaulted in the last academic year. that's up from 507 three years ago. the survey found worsening problems at the air force academy, despite changes put in place after our reporting exposed troubling patterns. defense department officials say they are troubled and disheartened by the surge in sexual harassment and viole at u.s. military service academies. according to a new survey released thursday, 50% of the

women and 16% of the men enrolled at the military air force and naval academies were sexually harassed. another 16% of the women and 2% of the men say they were sexually assaulted. >> there is a cultural rot, not just a few bad apples. >> reporter: congresswoman jackie speier's is subcommittee chair. >> i think heads need to roll. if the cadets are kicked out and their families are expected to pay tuition, maybe behavior will change. >> reporter: 221 cadets reported they were sexually assaulted. in 2017, we spoke to more than a dozen current and former air force academy cadets who said they were retaliated against after reporting their assault. >> you go there because you wan reporting the assault?

>> i regret it every day. i regret it every day because of everything that came after. i just wish i'd never came forward. >> reporter: nationwide, nearly 750 cadets and midshipmen said in an anonymous survey they were sexually assaulted last year. but only 92 formally reported it. >> the accountability is the missing element in all of this. >> reporter: done christensen, a retired colonel and former air force chief prosecutor says just four people accused of sexual assault at the academies last year were convicted. >> each one of the academies has a three star who oversees it. they're literally the only person who can prosecute the case and they simply do not send enough people to court. >> and that is part of the big problem. the pentagon says this report does not reflect the impact of prevenice progrtion programs im

last year. and he has directed an action plan in the coming weeks. we worked diligently to create new programs. we're going to stay on this. because to me when i met those women who are the best and the brightest, the toughest women i have ever met, the fact that they were assaulted, harassed and then put through it again by our service academy chief, generals who are in charge, simply unacceptable. we need the best people in our services. have the right to serve. >> looks like we're going to hear more pressure from congress. >> the gap between those who experienced it and those who report is vast. >> i give the pentagon a lot of props for being open, for being trar they try to address this problem. >> thanks, norah. another democrat has raised a challenge to president trump in 2020. >> together, america, we will

rise. i'm cory booker and i'm running for president of the united states of america. >> senator cory booker sent that message to supporters this morning. the new jersey senator is the fifth official candidate while three others have formed exploratory committees. ed o'keefe is on capitol hill. ed, it's getting crowded out there, good morning. >> reporter: sure is, john. senator booker has long before seen as a potential candidate. he's new jersey's junior senator and the 49-year-old has served here in the senate since 2013. before that, he served as mayor of newark for more than seven years. booker's campaign is expected to focus on addressing wealth inequality and the idea of restoring a sense of unity in the country. he spent much of the past year road testing that message on the campaign trail. on capitol hill, booker has at times tried unifying the place by work with republicans like rand paul on criminal justice

reform. he's been a strong democrat noticeably during the hearings for justice kavanaugh. next weekend is also when massachusetts senator elizabeth warren tells us she will formally kick off her campaign. john. >> all right, ed o'keefe, thank you. on monday, senator booker will be here at the table talking presidential politics and addressing other issues so you can see that monday morning here on "cbs this morning." >> a lot of questions for the senator. meantime, president trump tells "new york times" that congressional negotiations over border security are a, quote, waste of time. lawmakers have two weeks to avoid another potential government shutdown. the president said yesterday he won't consider an offer that doesn't include border wall funding. house speaker nancy pelosi repeated that democrats well offer no money for a wall. >> the same deadlock lasted to the partial government shutdown that lasted 35 days. mr. trump told reporters he would not have done anything

differently. >> if i didn't do the shutdown, people wouldn't understand the subject. now they understand the subject. they realize what a humanitarian crisis it is. we've set the stage for ways going to happen on the 15th of february. >> the president did not say whether he would declare a national emergency. he said he's not worried about potential legal challenges if he does. face the nation moderator margaret brennan will sit down with the president for a wide-raking discussion. you can see part of that interview twice this sunday on face the nation and during the super bowl pregame show. we're about to start one of america's great events, of course, that's super bowl weekend. sunday's game in atlanta will be the ninth super bowl for new england patriots quarterback tom brady and the first for los angeles rams quarterback jared goff. goff is 24 years old. the same age brady was in his first super bowl 17 years ago. cbs sports boomer eer asigh sen

we are taking a look at the roadways with the few accidents brewing but most are in the clearing stages. at south 101 and san pedro road the crash is on the shoulder but backed up all the way to highway 37 with speeds at 17 miles an hour. south at the golden gate bridge it looks much better. there clearing westbound 70 at east seventh street. we are tracking this storm system bringing rain and wind with the high wind watch in effect this afternoon for the entire bay area. the flash flood watch begins this evening into saturday morning. the rain and wind will kick in later this afternoon.

others accused of sexually abusing children over nearly eight decades. the announcement comes ten weeks after cbs news first reported allegations against priest serving in the galveston houston archdiocese. 5,000 current or former preaies who have been publicly accused. ni nikki batiste has been reporting. >> they're astonishing numbers. good morning, everyone. he presided over the largest and prominent churches in houston, the prince of peace. in our cbs investigation in november, john, who was one of the altar boys accused keller of molesting him as a child. another man similar in age and who attended the same church of labonte reached out to us. >> the first person i see came up on screen is john labonte.

well, i know a john labonte from houston. within a matter of seconds, there's a picture of father john. >> what going through your mind? >> i've never been struck by light nick but that's as close as you can get. >> mark quinn was watching our cbs news investigation last year. >> right here, says, acted very inappropriate. >> reporter: when john laponte tells us father keller molested him as a child even though in 2002 the church said it wasn't sexual abuse. in november, we took labonte's allegations to cardinal dinardo who's in charge of the houston arch diocese and president of the u.s. conference of catholic bishops. >> father don keller -- >> it's not a familiar one. >> does the name john laponte sound familiar? >> reporter: seeing that moment disgusted quin . >> all i kept saying was holy

blank, that's my boogie man. >> reporter: he said keller touched him inappropriately when he was 8 years old. now 50, he says he kept his nightmare a correct all his life. >> i just felt like how dare you side with a pedophile over the parishioners? and yet this has been the catholic church's m.o. time after time. >> reporter: then the church and the cardinal took quinn by surprise. they included father john kel r keller's name on their just released list of credibly accuseled priest and removed him from active ministry. cardinal dinardo apologized to victims. >> i did not ig for or neglect any one priest that was brought to my attention. some may say you moved too slowly but i recall once something came to my attention, i moved on it. >> father john keller was nng b list and now he is. >> his name being on the list means a great deal to me.

>> reporter: john labonte hopes the church will reopen his case. what are you feeling in this moment? >> i do have some relief in knowing that through telling my story that others might be protected. ward we reached out to the prince of peace and john keller but they say they have no comment. cardinal dinardo is expected to meet with the pope in rome last month during a global bishops meeting to address the sex abuse crisis and the catholic church. so many survivors have said they're frustrated by pope francis' lack of action. >> there has been a lack of action by the vatican. i like the point there, by one person speaking s tome as this until all of those stories are told, until there's full accountability. >> i think finally some relief from those coming forward.

and our morning round a call to raise awareness of heart disease. today is go red for women day. it's why we're wearing red. a new report estimates nearly half of all adults in the u.s. have some form of heart or blood vessel disease. it's due to recent guideline changes that consider high blood pressure at a reading of 130/80. heart disease is the number one killer of women. with only 55% of them know it's their greatest health threat. our dr. tara narula is a doctor and a spokesperson for the american heart association. welcome. such an important day for you to be here. and a perfect example of a patient of yours who on paper looked healthy and yet there was a mystery hidden inside her body

that was a ticking time bomb. >> right. this month we talk about the statistics. one out of every three women of women will die of cardiovascular disease. what i believe is going to change the battle is humanizing the disease and giving it a face. the face of your mother, your sister, your best friend, your coworker, in this case, my patient. she did not look like what a lot of people think cardiovascular disease looks like. she was 58. had a little high cholesterol in the family history. that's it. she didn't have high blood pressure, she didn't smoke, she wasn't diabetesic. she walked 10,000 steps a day and ate a mediterranean diet. she said i ate a steak dinner and had a little indy discretion but i thought it was heart burn. then i felt it again. i'm telling you. i said we're going send you for a test. i got a call that day that she had a severe blockage on a c.a.t scan. she had an 80% blockage of what we call the left main coronary

artery. if it remained untreated, it typically will be fatal within several years. so she was accidented. the blockage was opened. she's doing great. she's in rehab. but what the ideas of this was a mother. she owned a dance studio, she was a wife in the prime of her life. she did not become a statistic. she became a survivor because she talked about and mentioned her symptoms and prioritized her health. >> what are the warnings signs. if it's indy discretion you'll be on the phone all day long. >> this is tricky. so for women there are several different things that heart disease can present us. it can be a feeling of indy discretion, chest pressure, burning, squeezing, tightness. arm pain, back pain, jaw pain, shortness of breath, overwhelming fatigue, lightheadedness. a whole array of symptoms but important to recognize them and act on them. >> and since 80% of this is preventable, what are some of the steps we can take? >> step number one, whatever your to do list says today, take my kids to soccer, go to the office. let's move up to the top of the

list know my risk of cardiovascular disease and talk to my doctor about it. your doctor can sit down with you and identify your risk factors. then they can figure out what your numbers are. you should know them. your blood pressure, your cholesterol, blood sugar, and then you can take steps. the american heart association has seven things you can do to turn around and reverse your risk. >> why do more women die of heart attacks than men? >> other than the issues with awareness, right, on the women's side. there's issues on the science side, too. as doctors, we haven't really treated women the same as men, unfortunately. many women are told you're stressed out. you're anxious. they don't get as aggressively treated when they go to the hospital or by the medical profession. they're not studied like men are. most clinical trials have not enrolled women as much as men. we haven't analyzed data in a sex specific way and the biology of women is different and we're starting to say that out loud. >> should more women go to cardiologists in addition to their gp? >> i think they can. it's certainly something and if

sunday he'll direct his fifth super bowl. >> i mean, that flyover happens in about two seconds, so you better be on it because they are not going to circle around the stadium and do it again for you. >> is that more stressful for you, mike, than actually doing game? >> yeah, i've got a lot of experience covering football games. i've got less experience covering flyovers, so it is a little more stressful, believe it or not.y, the weather, which will dictate whether the stadium will have its iconic roof open or shut and if the flyover can be captured from inside the stadium as the fans will see it. >> i think i've got to just be flexible, so i've got to be prepared with an outside shot. got to be prepared with a shot inside from the field, and we'll see what the weather is like that day and what decision they make. >> plus or minus two or three seconds. >> it's a lot to coordinate, requiring each person to focus on his or her role. >> we'll have me in thunderbird seven in the control room and thunderbird number 8 will be on

to keep it open and i'm sorry that you're jealous of me. it was just the coolest trip up there. i can't lie. >> oh, my gosh. i've done it before. i've flown, and i can tell you it's the most thrilling experience. did you do any tricks with the thunderbirds, any fun maneuvers? >> yeah. after we did the flyover the stadium, they took me out to another space and we try the g-forces so they can get up to 9 gs, i made it to 7 gs and he said do you want to try some more, my head wanted to but my stomach did not. we did a couple of barrel rolls. i was able to be on the side flying. i can't even explain the whole thing. it's absolutely amazing to me that these are men and women and do this in like a theater of war under so much pressure and you know what your body goes through in doing that, so for me it's the ride of a lifetime but when you get down to the basics, this is something that is so important to the air force or navy flyovers as well. >> they do an incredible job. >> but it was cool. >> dana, i'm assuming you waited to eat. >> for me it was just cool.
