it's other things. and deadly crash. a plane drops from the sky into a southern california neighborhood. ♪ good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, they call it a dynasty for a reason. the new england patriots won their record-tying sixth super bowl last night. they beat the los angeles rams in the lowest scoring super bowl ever. the patriots quarterback tom brady became the first player in nfl history to be a six-time champion. mola lenghi is in atlanta with the highlights. good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning. yeah, the patriots, some might argue more specifically tom brady and bill belichick, got it done again last night here at mercedes-benz stadium in atlanta in front of what often felt like a home crowd. when the winning moment came, new england patriots fans

everywhere went while. the patriots made super bowl history with the win over the los angeles rams in atlanta. >> look at this! how could this not motivate you? [ cheers ] this is what it's all about. >> no better feeling than winning the super bowl. >> reporter: it's the patriots' sixth super bowl victory tying a record with the pittsburgh steelers. quarterback tom brady and head coach bill belichick were there for every one of them. >> all brady all day. number one. >> reporter: the night's most valuable player, patriots receiving julian edelman. >> tired, emotionally, physically, mentally. it was a hard-fought battle. >> reporter: shawn mcvay said it was a humbling experience. >> it was what they did, the play selection. i was not pleased with my feel of the flow of the game. >> reporter: it was the lowest scoring game of the super bowl, but that was fine with pats fans. >> awesome.

president addressed that he had stood firmly on somtimewhe wasn't nearly as direct. >> reporter: would you shut down the government again? >> we have to see what happens on february 15th. i don't take anything off the table. i don't like to take things off the table. >> reporter: president trump also isn't taking declaring a national emergency off the table. the president said he could do it if he doesn't get democrats to agree to a border wall by the february negotiation deadline. on sunday mr. trump spoke exclusively with "face the nation's" margaret brennan, addressing a wide range of issues including mueller's russia investigation. the president was asked if he would make the report public. >> that's up to the attorney general. i don't know. it depends -- i have no idea what it's going to say. >> reporter: the president also made news in talking about u.s. troops in iraq and a dual purpose he says they're serving. >> i want to be looking a little bit at iran because iran is a real problem -- >> whoa, that's news. you're keeping troops in iraq because you want to be able to strike in iran?

>> no, because i want to be able to watch iran. all i want to be able to do is watch. >> reporter: iraq's president responded saying u.s. troops are there as part of a specific mission to combat terrorism. he said president trump never asked for permission to watch iran. and president trump was also asked about how much he trusted his own intelligence chiefs. he said he does, but he doesn't always agree with them. the president will make his annual state of the union address tomorrow night. anne-marie? >> marc liverman here in new york. thanks a lot, mark. virginia governor ralph northam is resisting calls for his resignation this morning amid a controversy over a racist photo in his medical school yearbook. northam first apologized for the 1984 photo but later said he wasn't in the photo. ed o'keefe has details. i believe then and now that i am not either of the people in that photo. >> reporter: virginia democratic governor ralph northam says the racist photo that appears on his medical school yearbook is not

of him. friday after the photo surfaced, he apologized for appearing in it. why the change? >> my belief that i did not wear that costume or attend that party stems in part from my clear memory of other mistakes i made in the same period of my life. >> reporter: northam admitted to another moment in 1984 when he blackened his face for a dance competition. >> i darkened my face as part of a michael jackson costume. i look back now and regret that i did not understand the harmful legacy of an action like that. >> resign! resign! >> reporter: in virginia and across the nation there are calls for northam to step down. 2020 presidential candidates, the head of the dnc, civil rights groups and other leaders telling northam to go. and allow the commonwealth to

begin healing. president trump also tweeted about northam saying what he did is unforgivable. when will you think that you're not being affected?e' going t m today. we're going to take one day at a time. >> reporter: the state's lieutenant governor would take over if northam steps down. he's 39-year-old justin fairfax who would be the nation's youngest and currently only serving black governor. he isn't calling on northam to resign. at least not yet. red o'keefe, cbs news, richmond, virginia. at least five people were killed after a small plane crashed into a california home and then burst into flames. the national transportation safety board says the twin-engine cessna went down in yorba linda sunday shortly after taking off from fullerton municipal airport. video shows airplane parts scattered on the ground and on rooftops. the pilot, who was the only person on the plane, died.

four people inside the home were killed. the cause of the crash is under investigation. winter storm warnings are issued across california this morning. over the weekend heavy rain triggered mudslides that shut down pacific coast highway in malibu and highway 101 in santa barbara county. a ventura sheriff's search and rescue team member was killed trying to help people involved in a crash on a slick interstate 5. flash flood warnings were issued for some areas burned in the massive 2017 thomas fire in santa barbara and ventura counties. a federal jury is expected to begin deliberations today in the trial of notorious mexican drug lord joaquin "el chapo" guzman. disturbing new allegations were revealed in court documents on friday. they allege guzman raped young girls and called one of his victims his vitamins because he believed they gave him life. guzman has pleaded not guilty to 17 counts including drug trafficking and money laundering charges. coming up on the "cbs morning news" now, papal

"the cincinnati enquirer" reports a suspect in the deadly shooting of an ohio sheriff's deputy and the wounding of another deputy is scheduled to be in court this morning. clermont county detective bill

brewer was shot and killed saturday night during a 12-hour standoff at an apartment complex. another deputy was shot in the ankle and is okay. police say 23-year-old wade edward winn barricaded himself in an apartment and shot the deputies during the standoff. he's being charged with aggravated murder and attempted aggravated murder. "the atlanta journal constitution" says rapper 21 savage is in custody after being arrested by u.s. immigration and custom enforcement. he is from the united kingdom and overstayed his visa. he was ritaed yesterday. 21 savage has claimed to be from atlanta. authorities say that he entered the u.s. legally in 2005 but has been in the country illegally since his visa expired the following year. he could be deported. "the new york times" reports inmates in freezing cells at a federal jail in brooklyn pounded and relatives gathered outside. the jail lost heat and electricity last sunday after an electrical

fire. people protesting tried to get in yesterday. guards drove them back with pushes, shoves, and pepper spray. the "times" says most of the 1,600 inmates were kept on lockdown in cells after temperatures dipped to the single digits in new york last week. single digits last week. power was restored to the jail last night. the "los angeles times" reports actor and singer jussie smollett made his first public appearance since he was reportedly attacked last week. he performed saturday at a long-planned concert at the troubadour nightclub in los angeles. he said two masked men attacked him and put a rope around his neck while he was walking in chicago. he also says they used homophobic and racial slurs. he told concert-goers that he was okay. >> i was bruised, but my ribs were not cracked, they were not broken. above all, i fought back.

but quilted northern is not a robe. it's just really nice toilet paper. here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ japan's biggest snow festival is underway. the event opened this morning in sapporo. there are about 200 sculptures including some featuring "star wars" characters. there's also a sculpture of the number-one female tennis player in the world, japan's naomi osaka. organizers expect more than two million visitors to attend the festival. on the cbs "money watch" now, foxconn's factory is back on track, and nissan blames brexit for scrapping suv plans.

diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. well, this week investors can expect several earnings report from tech-heavyweights. google reports later on its parent company, snapple reports tomorrow, and twitter on thursday. on friday, the dow rose 64 points. the s&p added two, and the nasdaq lost 17. nissan is scrapping plans to build its new x-rail suv in britain, producing it solely in japan. the automaker says with only two months before brexit, uncertainty over britain's departure from the eu was making it harder to plan for the future. declining demand for diesel vehicles in europe has forced nissan to invest in other technologies and move to save costs. the company also recently cut hundreds of jobs at its sunderland factory, britain's biggest car plant. foxconn says it will build its wisconsin factory after all. the company is reversing course after new discussions with president trump.

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ u.s. troops over the weekend added additional razor wire along the southern border fence in nogales, arizona. the city's mayor wants it removed.

the wire had only lined the top of the fence. now it lines nearly the entire thing. the mayor says he plans to write congress to let them know he thinks the additional wire casts negativity on the border community, and he also says it's a safety concern. a suspected killer is back in custody in texas after escaping from a prison van. multiple law enforcement agencies searched for 44-year-old mixed martial arts fighter cedric marks yesterday. he escaped from a private transport van during a stop at a mcdonald's about 40 miles north of houston. he was found nine hours later hiding in a garbage can. he's suspected of killing his ex-girlfriend and a male friend of hers last month in oklahoma. and a colony of seals that took over a popular northern california beach during the government shutdown received some human visitors over the weekend. about 60 adult seals moved on to the beach at point reyes national seashore during the shutdown because there was no staff there to keep them away. 35 newborn pups now.h to about
