parts of the area looking like the sierra. >> kiet do flew sky drone 5 into south bay, starts our team coverage. >> reporter: it is hard to believe we are still in the bay area right now. who needs tahoe when you got all this? it has not snowed on the highway 17 summit for years and so you got the feeling like mother nature was making up for are lost time. it was off and on since 2:00 a.m., when it was on, boy was it on. at times the huge flakes fell in big chunks. hearing about the storm and got up at 4:00 a.m. to make sure he got over the hill okay to get to work on time. >> it's peaceful. i live in tahoe a little while, it's gorgeous anytime you are in the snow it's peaceful. it's just nice. just is gorgeous. i love cold weather. alone, traffic was heavy and slow going over the summit especially in the hours before sunrise. cal trans had easy since

here at june inner campground which is the highest point where you can actually drive and only this opened up late this morning. a lot of people waiting to come up here to get the rare chance to play in the snow. it's only a couple of inches, this low level snow in the bay area has people of all ages catching that magical winter feeling. i get like a kid. >> reporter: others took advantage for a limited time only determined to find their own fresh slopes. >> try to get there before it melts. >> reporter: use today driving not sierra for snow, this is one of those rare times when it comes to us. >> we were supposed to go to tahoe this weekend but it was too dangerous,. >> reporter: this family has root in chicago but now live in alamo passing the winter wonder through the generations. >> when he was his size i took him up in the snow along with his brother and sister. >> reporter: a rare tradition.

snow for all of bay area mountains including mount diablo, can you see the snow cored peaks of mount diablo. and this showing that snow earlier this morning especially for the diablo range, santa cruz mountains, wrapping up quickly for the sunshine. mount st. helena, mount tam, mount diablo, and also for twin peaks, national weather service reporting that a trained weather spotter saw a dusting of snow around 3:00 a.m. for twin peaks. so that is a very rare occurrence in the last time san francisco saw snow was on this day back in 1976, can you see the snow over sutro tower, we will talk about if s the week and what you can expect tomorrow

morning. turning very cold, how low those temperatures who go coming up. take a look at this, this is how it looked in parts of the sierra foothills this morning. this is in downtown placerville. interstate 80 in the sierra is back open. this after snow shutdown that freeway in both directions this morning. reporter laura wallace is in placer county. >> in applegate you can see a dusting here of snow on just about everything, so just enough to leave a little bit a mess, make the roads icy, it is going to get a mix of rain and snow early part of the afternoon here. also a lot of trucks pulled off along 80 because there are closures farther up. a lot of excitement about the low snow in the early morning hour, headed over to auburn where we saw a lot of cars covered in snow for those that parked outdoors overnight, there was some scraping to do. and just this thin layer left behind as that storm rolled through.
