national forest. let's get right to kpnx , andrea borah. they left the area to see snow, and almost did not make it home alive. >> reporter: if you think of the trip where everything that could've gone wrong, did, that's what happened to this couple tonight. they are happy to be safe and warm once again. the trouble for this couple began under the mistletoe. >> my christmas present to her was i wanted to take her to mendocino so she could sesnow. we went off for twor three days. it will be fun. >> reporter: they went wednesday to the mendocino national forest near alder springs for camping and offloading, oceanview. >> the tracks ended, i went forward, and i got stuck. i was spinning tires, and i bent over to look under.

>> reporter: the jeep was high centered. it was stuck in the middle.>> reporter: it would pull just enough, and then it was like nope, just kidding. we just pushed and pulled. it was just rocking the car a little bit. it would not go anywhere. >> reporter: that is when one dig out of many started. >> i was using my hands to scoop this up. >> reporter: every time they dug out, even with four-wheel- drive, they would get stuck again. the snow kept piling up. they began rationing food, making this list. >> we did prepare for the worst, but hoped for the best. >> i told her, if we do not get found by tuesday, i will set a tree on fire.>> reporter: suddenly, when she was d,shhear different. >> i popped my head up and i saw my snowmobile with a guy that was all red.

>> i leaned over and i honked the horn. i open the door, i was like, we need help! >> reporter: after harrowing toe off the mountain, they are now safely home. >> reporter: you ever want to see snow again? >> not for a while.>> reporter: carlos and maia are back home. they will go up to the mendocino national forest, this spring, to think the locals who pulled them off the mountains. to get a better look at the mountain with local supervision, they did say they rationed their food. they were prepared for up to two weeks on that mountain. >> you have to respect mother nature. thank you for that report. a prominent nfl network reporter says that the raiders will not play in san francisco next season. they will move to vegas in 2020. nfl insider tweeted that the raiders will not play in san francisco. he says, with the mayor opposed

to the raiders playing in the city, oracle park is off the table. they also say that only oakland, or levi stadium can service options. julia spoke with the mayor earlier today about the possibility of them going to oracle park. >> reporter: the mayor says she believes the oakland raiders should finish their last season out in oakland. they owe it to their fans. she says it is congested in san francisco with the giants set to come here. i wanted to be clear, where i stand, and what i need to focus our time and energy on. >> the raiders do not have a

good track record. the city of oakland is suing them for what has happened there. i don't know why san francisco would like to add themselves to that list. i spoke to some diehard raiders fans and asked them how they felt about san francisco not rolling out the red carpet for the team. they said they understand. they hope it will get settled soon so they know where they will play in 2019. in san francisco, kpix 5. there is no out on some of the bay area peaks. people are coming out to play in the powder. places like mount st. helena, mount diablo, they all had snow. this is a closer look at the summit of highway 17 from sky drone five. you can see it looked like the sierra foothills this morning. this is outside of fremont.

this is an aerial view of all of that snow. extract the storm has moved on, and in its place we had cold conditions. people were in concord, getting the jackets on. >> it was freezing cold all day. i feel like i am in canada. holy cow. our chief meteorologist is here now. all of the snow could stick around for little bit. we could get a couple of days of snow. it is below freezing up in the mountains. the source of our air is coming from canada. this is modified canadian air. look at the temperatures outside right now. it is 30 degrees, not for a low. san francisco, it is brisk and breezy. it is 49 degrees for a high in livermore. that makes today, this afternoon, the coldest daytime high that we have had in the

tri-valley more than 2 years. it was january 6, 2017. how cold we get tonight? pretty chilly. we will be below freezing in livermore, napa, and fairfield. san jose is close. fremont to mountain view is at 35. it is 20 degrees in santa rosa. that will tie for the coldest night so far. we have widespread 30s near the bay. there could be frost there. any roads that are still wet inland, could be icy tomorrow morning. please watch out for black ice for the morning commute tomorrow. we will talk about the next rain chance, and when temperatures get more mild in a few minutes. president trump delivered his second state of the union address. this was his first to a very divided congress. our political reporter is here. melissa, there was a weird, unexpected moment of unity. i think everybody enjoyed it. >> reporter: it was well received. he did begin by applauding the

number of women elected to congress in 2018. that caused democrats, and women dressed in white to dress- up, standup, and cheer. then he called on a band for late-term abortions. there was something for everyone today. at the start of the speech, he struck a unifying town. >> victory is not winning for our party, victory is winning for our country. quote was, and economic miracle is taking place in the united states. the only thing that can stop it are foolish wars, politics, or what he called ridiculous partisan investigations. there was a democratic rebuttal by stacy abrams. she did not back down on the democrats promise of investigations. >> we need him to tell the truth. we need him to respect his duties. she is the first african- american woman to deliver the rebuttal. she ended with a call for unity saying even though she does not like the presidents approach, she does not want him to fail. coming up at 11:00, we'll show you what the president had to say about the border wall and california. unity is one thing, but we stopped to get together on the border issue. we will see how much unity there really is.>> i love to say, at the end, he had world war ii veterans, and folks that liberated concentration camps. one man was in one of those concentration camps, and they were sitting next to each other. it ended on a really positive and inspiring note.

teachers voted to authorize a strike. the city council president has put forward a resolution supporting the teachers. it calls for higher wages, smaller class sizes, and keeping schools open. before filing into the council meeting to speak out, teachers said there was a tremendous amount at stake. >> we will not accept the closure of the 25 schools that the district wants. we will fight for a bright future for the city and the tradition of martin luther king jr., and for the resources our students deserve. there is a lot at stake. this is a civil rights stands for public education. >> they are facing a $30 million budget gap. if they do not make progress soon, oakland teachers could go on strike in less than two weeks. the man forced to use his bare hands to kill a mountain lion, after an attack. the bay area mayor is

thing by fighting back. and necropsy will be performed on the mountain line. san jose is looking to build an underground tunnel with the help of elon musk. the tunnel would connect minetta international airport to the dear don train station. the mayor says he has been a phone discussions with elon musk's company. passengers would be whisked through the tunnel in electric cars or pods. >> surely our city will not get less crowded. god is not grading morland. if we have a viable connection, it will be underground. a >> boston is full of tunnels that create opportunities for traffic to flow in a variety of directions. tunnels are the way of the future. so far this is just an idea. there is no budget and no timeline. the mayor said a tunnel to the airport would be cheaper than a surface rail line that was estimated to cost $800 million.

southwest airlines launched the first flight to hawaii from oakland today. the plane landed in honolulu this evening. this was a test flight. the only people on board were airline employees and government inspectors. this is the final phase for the airline to get federal approval to launch passenger flights from california to hawaii. the additional competition could lead to cheaper flights. the airline said they will not announce flight schedules until they get the final approval from the faa. it was delayed by the recent government shutdown. let's take a live look at sfo. the airport will open its new observation deck to passengers. this is called the g terrace. this is a 3000 square foot outdoor deck for international passengers waiting their departing flights. there is room for 89 people. b view of operations. and >>ere is a bit of magic to air travel. i believe we've lost that over

bliz. there is six feet of snow, but the wind was at 90 miles per hour near the summit. it is clearing up in the mountains tonight. skiers will have better conditions to the fresh powder starting tomorrow. conditions around here are straight up chilly. these are the highs today. half moon bay was the warmest at 52 degrees. santa rosa livermore did not hit 50 degrees today. with clear skies overnight tonight, it will be cold. santa rosa statute 28. livermore is down to 31. fremont amount of you could see frosty spots. oakland will drop to 38 degrees. san francisco will be 40 degrees. that is the second coldest night of the season for them. we are looking at kpix 5 high resolution doppler. look at the snowpack. forget about the wind. the snowpack is doing amazing. it has jumped 24% in four days. the central sierra is 120% of average. statewide, it is 25% average.

that is wonderful news. the snow the falls in february is the water we use in july and august when we get no precipitation. we love the snowpack above average. more snow is coming this weekend. we have a broad low-pressure area sitting over nevada. this will drag down cold, canadian air. temperatures will be below average for the next 7-14 days, to the low-pressure area leaves. we have showers offshore. we have sunshine tomorrow morning. it will be cold. the kids will need jackets. we have cloud cover by the afternoon. we have a mainly sunny day. on thursday, clouds increase. this is now friday. this is rainfall. we have light-moderate rainfall as early as 9:00 a.m. the weekend looks unsettled. it is not rain all the time. we have moderate rain at times. we have more sierra snowfall, all the way to seattle with the warm -- cold air.

from the actor's controversial remarks. d britain's liam neeson's latest red carpet premiere was canceled. this is the latest fallout from his controversial remarks. he told britain's, the independent newspaper, he once thought about killing a random black person after a close friend told him she had been by a black man. he says the incident happened nearly 40 years ago , and he sought help to get past it. he says he understands the hurt his comments have caused. he did share them to start a conversation. >> we all pretend that we are politically correct. in this country, is the same in my own country, sometimes you scratch the service surface and you discover racism and bigotry. it is there. >> he clarified that he is not a racist. reaction on twitter has been critical.
