good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. president trump appealed for bipartisan unity in washington and an end to revenge, resistance, and retribution in his state of the union address last night. mr. trump also renewed his call for a border wall and pushed for hard-line immigration policies. natalie brand is in washington with the key takeaways from that speech. natalie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the 82-minute speech included calls for bipartisanship on issues from infrastructure to lowering the cost of prescription drugs, but partisan divide remains, particularly on the topic of immigration. >> the state of our union is strong. t push for unity in his second state of the union address

tuesday night. >> victory is not winning for our party. victory is winning for our country. >> reporter: facing a divided congress, the president warned democrats not to let partisan investigations hamper u.s. prosperity. >> if there is going to be peace and legislation, there cannot be war and investigation. >> reporter: the biggest applause of the night highlighted a visible change in congress. >> more women serving in congress than at any time before. [ cheers ] >> reporter: and most of them are part of the newly empowered democratic majority in the house. [ chants ] but there were not many cheers from democratic lawmakers as president trump renewed his demands for a southern border wall. >> simply put, walls work, and walls save lives. >> reporter: president trump stopped short of declaring a national emergency to build his wall. lawmakers have just nine days now to strike a border security

deal and avert another partial government shutdown. >> america is made stronger by the presence of immigrants, not walls. >> reporter: a rising democratic star, stacey abrams, who lost the race for georgia governor last year, gave the official democratic response. >> the shutdown was a stunt engineered by the president of the united states. >> reporter: in his speech, president trump also announced he'll meet north korean leader kim jong-un in vietnam at the end of this month. on foreign policy, the president also touched on syria and venezuela, back to domestic policy. the president talked about paid family leave, ending childhood cancer, and the goal of ending hiv. areas that also drew bipartisanship applause. anne-marie? >> natalie brand in washington. thank you, natalie. both democratic and republican lawmakers are responding to the president's speech. marc liverman is here in new york with the mixed reactions. marc, good morning. >> reporter: good morning,

anne-marie. like you said, those reactions were very mixed. some said the address really did help unify both parties. others argued it did the exact opposite, paying closer attention to what was left out of the hour and 20-minute speech rather than what was said. >> victory is not winning for our party, victory is winning for our country. >> reporter: president trump urged republicans and democrats to come together during his second official state of the union address. but the political reaction that came after it was far from unified. >> the state of the union was disappointing on many fronts. he spoke a lot of words of bipartisanship, but this is a guy whose teleprompter is very different than his tweets, than his constant rhetoric. >> reporter: independent senator bernie sanders offered a rebuttal on line focusing more on what the president didn't mention rather than what he did. >> climate change is not a "hoax." it's a reality which is causing devastating harm all over our

country and all over the world. >> reporter: republican lindsey graham on fox's "hannity" defended many of the president's decisions. among them, a decision to hold a second meeting with north korean leader kim jong-un in a few weeks. this despite warnings from the president's own national security officials that north korea's nuclear stockpile remains a threat. >> to those people criticizing the president, how well did you do with rocket man? yeah, i'm very hopeful that when meeting -- this new meeting will lead to a breakthrough. >> reporter: the state of the union received a total of 104 rounds of applause. 69 of them came from democrats as well as republicans. and you probably noticed dozens of democratic women who chose to wear white during that address. that was done to honor u.s. suffragettes of the past. >> thank you, marc. ahead on "cbs this morning," a look ahead to the iowa caucuses. we'll talk with voters there for their reaction to the president's state of the union

address. as we reported earlier, president trump says that he will hold a second summit with north korean leader kim jong-un. mr. trump said the summit will be held on february 27th and 28th in vietnam. the president says that he will continue his efforts to persuade north korea to give up nuclear weapons. mr. trump first met with kim last june in singapore. and president trump also said that the u.s. has liberated virtually all of the territory that was once in isis control. >> now as we work with our allies to destroy the remnants of isis, it is time to give our brave warriors in syria a warm welcome home. >> the commander of u.s. forces in the middle east warned the fight against isis is not over. charlie d'agata reports from a base near the last isis holdout in eastern syria. >> reporter: nobody here is

declaring victory just yet, but u.s. forces and their allies have now cornered isis into an area of just a few square miles. on our way here, we came across a huge military convoy of trucks carrying armored personnel carriers in brand-new pickups headed toward the battlefield for whatever comes next. when we last visited the front line around two weeks ago, the battle was still raging. in recent days, hundreds of isis fighters have either smuggled themselves out or tried to blend in with civilians screaming from the remaining villages under the group's control. now there's still thought to be around 2,000 isis fighters remaining in eastern syria. in a new report, the u.s. defense department warned the terror group is likely to resurge here within 6 to 12 months without sustained pressure. the pressure is on. defense officials describe isis

as a force of battle hardened, disciplined fighters with its leadership still intact. less defeated and lying low until u.s. forces leave here. charlie d'agata, cbs news, eastern syria. virginia governor ralph northam continues to defy calls to resign. northam was linked to a racist photo in his 1984 medical school yearbook page. much of the business of governing was put on hold yesterday as the democrat weighed whether he can stay in the job. democratic state senator louise lucas is increasingly impatient over northam's failure to step down. >> i cannot tell you why he hasn't resigned, but i am so praying that he will do that and get it behind him. >> if northam does step down, lieutenant governor justin fairfax would become governor. but he's now being accused of sexually assaulting a woman 15 years ago. for the first time, pope francis has publicly acknowledged the scandal of priests and bishops sexually abusing nuns. francis made the comments tuesday after his historic visit

there are new revelations about a pilot in the yorba linda crash, and no charges for an officer in a mall shooting. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the birmingham news" reports protesters burned american flags after a police officer was cleared in the deadly shooting of a man he mistook for the gunman in a mall shooting. >> say his name! >> e.j.! >> say his name! >> e.j.! >> say his name! >> e.j.! >> demonstrators called out the name of a shooting victim, 21-year-old emantic "e.j." bradford jr. they also burned american flags last night outside of the city hall in hoover, alabama. the officer who has not been identified shot bradford while responding from an earlier shooting at the mall last thanksgiving. authorities released surveillance video from the night of the incident. alabama's attorney general said the officers saw bradford running toward the scene with a gun and believed that he had fired the earlier shots. he said the officer did not

commit a crime. an attorney representing bradford's family said his clients will have their day in court. >> e.j. bradford's life matters, and we're not going to let this be forgotten about. >> a protest is planned for this morning at the attorney general's office in montgomery. pennsylvania's "patriot news" says a state court ordered former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky to be resentenced for child sexual abuse. the court turned down sandusky's request for a new trial but said he was improperly sentence using mandatory minimums. the 75-year-old former coach was sentenced in 2012 to 30 to 60 years in prison for sexually abusing ten boys. sandusky's lawyer says that he will appeal for a new trial to the state supreme court. "the new york times" reports the red carpet events for the premiere of liam neeson's new movie were canceled amid the uproar of what some call racist

remarks by the actor. on monday a british newspaper published an interview with neeson saying that he wanted to kill a random black man nearly 40 years ago when a close friend told him that she had been raped by a black man. he says he regrets having those thoughts. in a tv interview yesterday, neeson discussed how he got over his behavior. >> power walking. >> power walking? >> two hours every day. to get rid of this. i'm not racist. i -- i -- this was nearly 40 years ago. >> neeson said that he would have responded with a similar, quote, primal urge if his friend's attacker had been white. california's "orange county register" reports sheriff's officials say the pilot of a small plane that crashed into a neighborhood had false credentials identifying him as a retired chicago police officer. 75-year-old antonio pastini was killed when his twin-engine cessna broke apart and crashed into a house sunday in yorba

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ on the cbs "money watch," fiat chrysler issues a recall, and new emojis represent disabled people. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. wall street remains on earnings watch with a couple key reports due today. automaker general motors and fast, casual chain chipotle. investors have been paying close attention to the automaker as vehicle sales continue to decline. gm recently announced more layoffs and plans to close several factories in the u.s. as for where stocks wrapped, the dow rallied 172 points yesterday. the s&p 500 added 12, and the nasdaq rose 54. fiat chrysler is recalling more than 660,000 heavy-duty

trucks worldwide. the automaker says a loose nut can cause a loss of steering control. the recall covers ram 3,500 pickups from 2013 through 2017, as well as 2,500 pickups and 3,500 cabs from 2014 through 2017. the company says it's aware of eight crashes and one injury that could be related. most of the trucks are in the u.s. and canada. meanwhile, one of the nation's busiest airports was even busier, packed with travelers returning home after super bowl liii in atlanta. nearly 102,000 passengers flew out of atlanta's international airport on monday. it broke the record for the number of people screened at the airport in a single day. the tsa says some passengers waited for hours to get through security on what many called mass exodus monday. and there are more than a dozen new emojis that represent people with disabilities. a person with a cane, an

he's believed to be the second american to have died as a result of this. omar villafranca tells us what happened.heuld have had a long life ahead of him. >> reporter: alice brown never expected to bury her grandson, 24-year-old william. brown was killed last week when his vape pen exploded in his face outside of this north texas vape shop. more than ten million american adults use e-cigarettes. experts say a malfunction can happen without warning. brown is not the first person killed by a vape pen accident. last year a florida man was killed by a projectile wound to the head from his exploding vape pen. both men were using what's called a mechanical mod. mechanical mods do not have safety features to keep batteries from overheating. most e-cigarettes have safety precautions but can still malfunction. carnegie mellon university engineering professor jay
