and powering flames shooting >>rting, and i actually thought it was a bomb for a second. ♪ good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you, i'm anne-marie green. in virginia, crisis in the state capitol. the three top leaders, all democrats, face scandals this morning. this comes less than a week after a racist photo surfaced from the governor's medical school yearbook. marc liverman is here in new york with more on the newest revelations and allegations. marc, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the effects of this growing scandal don't end with these three leaders. democrats were hoping to take back the gop-dominated legislature, but all that could put this in jeopardy. >> awful week for virginia. >> reporter: an understatement from virginia senator mark warner with three of the state's top leaders under fire. just days after virginia governor ralph northam admitted he once wore blackface, the

ssattoeral, herrinealed d t ppers at a college i . example from my past that i have thought about deep regret in the many years since." hours after herring's admission, a woman accusing lieutenant governor justin fairfax of sexual assault put out a detailed statement of her claim. vanessa tyson said that the 2004 democratic national convention, what began as consensual kissing quickly turned into a sexual assault. >> the senate will come to order -- >> reporter: fairfax presided over the virginia senate yesterday but otherwise avoided the public. in a statement he said, "reading dr. tyson's account is painful. i have never done anything like what she suggests." >> we are screwed, and we need to replace them. >> reporter: a growing number of virginians are fed up. >> because whether you did it in the past or did it now, it shouldn't have been done in the first place. >> at what point we say, okay, let's move forward.

>> reporter: northam admits to being in this photo of a man blackface and in a ku klux klan outfit. if he were to step down, fairfax is next in line followed by herring and then a republican. governor northam continues to stay away from the public as he contemplates the future. he's meeting with african-american leaders and may hire a private investigator to prove it's not him in the photo. anne-marie? >> wow, marc liverman. thank you. now to venezuela where the military is blocking humanitarian aid from entering the country. that is despite severe food shortages amid a collapsing economy. embattled president nicolas maduro insists there is no emergency, and military leaders continue to back him. many soldiers, however, appear ready to abandon their allegiance. elizabeth palmer is in caracas. translator: what we need is maduro to leave.

we must overthrow this government. >> reporter: without the armed forces, president nicolas maduro is finished. so state tv broadcasts pictures almost daily showing apparently loyal troops with their commander in chief. [ cheers ] in reality, vast numbers of them, on a salary of about $6 a month, have had enough. why are they ready to desert the president? >> translator: because they are tired. we are suffering just like the people are. my family, for example, my salary isn't even enough to buy food. >> reporter: is this something you can talk about among yourselves in the barracks, or is it too dangerous? >> translator: if we trust the people, we talk about what's going on in the country. but the higher ranks don't know what we're talking about. that is why i'm doing the interview like this -- to se. soldiers and their brass to

to the coalition partners. >> it is not a change in the mission. it does not change the structure, design, or authorities on which the campaign has been based. >> reporter: pompeo told the partners the drawdown will be coordinated and that details on would be released soon. mola lenghi, cbs news, the white house. the suspect accused of kidnapping 13-year-old jayme closs and killing her parents appeared in a wisconsin court yesterday. >> and do you understand the charges again you at this time? >> yes. >> 21-year-old jake patterson is facing kidnapping, burglary, and murder charges. closs escaped last month, 88 days after her abduction. prosecutors will not press charges for additional crimes to save the teen from reliving her nightmare. michelle saffert is a close family friend and says the family is grateful. >> they have goals outlined and have a direction that they want to go, and jayme's fully aware of what that is. >> patterson's next court date is march 27th. a gas explosion in san francisco sent flames into the

sky. the fire ignited yesterday after construction workers cut a natural gas line. five buildings burned before firefighters took control of the fire. witnesses describe a terrifying scene. >> i couldn't believe it when i looked out and there were flames like 50-feet high. it was insane. >> officials evacuated several nearby buildings including a medical clinic. hundreds of customers lost gas service and electricity during the incident, and no injuries have been reported. a new executive producer has been named for cbs' "60 minutes." cbs news president susan zirinsky announced that bill owens will lead the broadcast. it's america's top-rated news program. owens has been executive editor at "60 minutes" is since 2008. he is only the third executive producer of the "60 minutes" show which has run since 1968. coming up on the morning news now, phone apps invading your privacy. which apps are recording your every swipe without permission.

fireworks lit up the sky over hong kong in celebration of the lunar new year. more than 23,000 shells were fired over victoria harbor last night. organizers say the fireworks were designed to highlight the traditional lucky number eight and pig noses since this is the year of the pig. a warning about phone apps that track you without permission, and a new apology from elizabeth warren. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "politico" reports elizabeth warren apologized after a document surfaced showing that she identified herself as american indian on her 1986 texas state bar registration card. the democratic presidential hopeful also suggested that she

might have labeled herself as american indian on other documents, as well. warren said that she grew up believing she had native american ancestry and marked her identity following what her family told her. >> i am also sorry for not being more mindful of this decades ago. tribes and only tribes determine tribal citizenship. >> warren has come under criticism and apologized in the past for claiming american indian ancestry. when she took a highly publicized dna test last year, cherokee tribal leaders denounced the move. "the albuquerque journal"" reports new mexico governor michelle lujan grisham defended her decision to withdraw most of the state's 118 national guard troops from the mexican border. the democratic governor announced her decision tuesday night just hours before president trump's state of the union address. >> i think the president should

lead by not -- by removing himself from this political, angry, racist rhetoric. nothing more than a dog whistle. and he should lean in and help us with real border security. >> she said a small number of national guard troops will remain in the southwest corner of the state to help with humanitarian needs. that area has seen a recent influx of migrants from central america. "the san francisco chronicle" reports more than 40 years after a serial killer terrorized the city's gay community, police released a new sketch of the suspect. investigators believe the man, known as the doodler stabbed to death at least five men in the mid '70s. police released a pair of sketches of the suspect yesterday. one from 1975 and the other showing what he might look like now. he got his nickname, the doodler, because he would lure his victims in by drawing sketches of them. "people" reports daytime soap star susan lucci was shocked when she found out that she had heart disease last year despite her healthy mediterranean diet and daily exercise routine.

lucci, who is 72, felt intense chest pain last october. she was diagnosed with a 90% blockage in the main artery leading to her heart and a 70% blockage in another artery. doctors put stents in. lucci is a volunteer spokesman for the american heart association. she says if it can happen to her, it can happen to anyone. and "tech crunch" reports many popular airline hotel and retail iphone apps secretly record users' screens without asking for permission. companies such as air canada, abercrombie & fitch, expedia, hotels.com, and singapore airlines reportedly record every tap and swipe without users' knowledge. some apps are reported to be inadvertently exposing sensitive data. air canada says it does not capture phone screens outside of the air canada app. still to come now, a toy car recall. barbie's dream camper could take a dangerous turn for young drivers.

good morning, diane. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. u.s. stocks slipped yesterday, snapping a five-session winning streak for the s&p 500. mixed quarterly results and a lack of quarterly results and a lack of u.s.-china trade talks seemed to rattle the markets. the dow dropped 21 points. the s&p 500 shed 6, and the nasdaq fell 26. fisher-price is recalling barbie dream campers sold at walmart due to a risk of injury to kids. a faulty foot pedal issue can cause the toy vehicles to accelerate after the foot pedal is released and potentially cause injury. 44,000 of the battery-operated vehicles are affected. the u.s. consumer product safety commission says there were 17 reports of the power wheel toys continuing to turn after the pedal released. no injuries have been reported. the new york police department is calling for the waze navigation google application to stop showing the drunk driving checkpoints. the app features realtime user-submitted reports which

advised drivers about potential issues. the nypd sent a letter to google last weekend saying the checkpoint feature puts public safety at risk. google said it believes informing drivers about speed traps allows them to be more careful and makee decision meanwhile, the music streaming service spotify announces acquiring two podcasting companies as it expands to embrace nonmusic audio. the stockholm-based company said yesterday it acquired gimlet media and anchor f.m. the company plans to spend $400 million to $500 million in podcast acquisitions in 2019. and haagen dazs is introducing new alcohol-infused ice cream flavors. they include irish cream brownie, vanilla bean bourbon truffle, almond toffee, and irish cream cookie squares among others. you won't need an i.d. to purchase the sweet treats. they have .5% alcohol by volume, the same amount found in a nonalcoholic beer. anne-marie?

alone in morrow bay and called authorities. rescuers recorded the baby crying and set out in a boat, playing the audio over and over on a speaker hoping to find the mom, and it worked. when the mother swam over, they tossed the pup to her, and she swam away with her baby. a north carolina man is about to have an out-of-this-world experience. navy veteran houston kidd wrote a children's book about a tiny animal called a water bear after watching a documentary about it. the book, "willow: the water bear" will be on board a spacex rocket on board to the international space station in april. an astronaut will read the story, and kids will be able to watch on line. >> a water bear is a microscopic creature that can survive extreme stressors such as radiation. they can live in the antarctic, they can even survive in outer space. children would love to learn about this. >> the book was selected by a program called "story time from space." coming up on "cbs this morning," john dickerson puts his music skills to the test

birth three times since first arriving to congress in 2005. >> when i first became pregnant i was immediately put on a list of members that would potentially retire that cycle. >> reporter: work-life balance can be a struggle for all moms here at the capitol. house leadership wants to make the schedule more family friendly this year, holding fewer votes after 7:00 p.m. and also allowing for more time in home districts. >> i think for any working mom, having the certainty around the schedule makes a big difference. >> reporter: porter heard a lot of constituent concerns about balancing work and family. >> the single-most common question i was asked as a candidate wasn't about policy or about my qualifications, but what's going to happen when you win. >> reporter: porter is making reducing the cost of childcare one of her legislative priorities. she'd also like to see expanded daycare options on the capitol campus. >> in terms of how congress is changing to accommodate mothers of young children, i think it hasn't.
