underway right now at a restaurant in campbell. good afternoon, i'm michelle griego. >> i'm kenny choi. an armed man has barricaded himself inside a denny's restaurant for hours now. this happened near the intersection of south bascam and arro coseco drive. >> kit has the very latest. >> we reporter: we are in the six and a half hours of the standoff. a couple of officers showed up in the past couple minutes. a k9-unit is in place. they put the police drone up a few minutes ago. they've got the believe surrounded. if he's still in there he's not getting out and they're being very patient for now. it's not a sight you see very often in campbell, heavily armed officers with assault rifles, and not one, but two armored vehicles. this all began at 5:30 this morning when campbell police say the suspect got into an argument with a denny's employee in the

parking lot. he followed the worker into the building and for some reason, threatened them with a gun. all the staff and any customers inside at the time escaped. the crisis negotiation team is here and they tried talking to him over the loud speaker but he's been holdup inside ever since. denny lives across the street. >> it's a little bit anxious. i eet fr where i live so i'm a little bit nervous. >> reporter: margie is a hairdresser whose salon has been shut down and canceled appointments means hundreds in lost income. >> do you blame the police for locking this down? >> i do not. it's for everybody's safety. >> reporter: and the campbell p.d. getting help from the sheriff's office and santa clara p.d. it's shut down to dry creek road and campbell. we're live in

campbell, kpix 5. >> thank you. back to the storm watch taking on a live look from our mount vaca camera, you can see the new storm is moving in right now. let's get right to mary lee who is in the weather center with more on this latest storm. mary? >> and kenny we are tracking the rain pushing into the bay area with the heaviest rain just offshore and that's about to move in. you can see on high def doppler, all of that rain lighting up our radar screen. let's zoom in from the north bay, petaluma, novato, pushing across the golden gate, in through daily city and across the bay bridge and across the peninsula from mill berry, san mateo, redwood city, pacifica, along the coast through monterra, and half moon bay. you can see all of that activity just offshore, so the heaviest rain about to move in. here's a live look with some sprinkles

just starting to show up. that storm watch scale looking at a five for the impact of the rain, wind and flooding it's a three. the greatest impact will be on the evening commute. a high-speed chase with police turned deadly after the driver ran a red light and slammed into three other cars in stockton. now an oakland teenager is under arrest. more now from reporter alyssa bacera. >> i've seen accidents before and this is like the worst. >> reporter: the shock obvious on the face of a woman passing by this horrifying accident. mangled and twisted metal spread across an intersection. the result what appears to be a teenager making several bad, evening deadly decisions. it all started here not far from the fatal accident. this white sherry silverado truck is stolen. the crime caught in surveillance video. >> i got up to go to work at 3:30, walked outside and it was gone.

i see the cameras pulling off and called it in and they told me they -- at 3:05, it was already in pursuit. >> reporter: chp says roughly 3:00 a.m. they attempted to pull that same truck over t officers on a high-speed chase through stockton. >> i saw a woman, the car passed by the house and she came and told me she seen the car pass by her house doing at least about 80 to 90 and this is the results of somebody doing something stupid. >> reporter: chp says the 17-year-old male from oakland reportedly drove the stolen truck through a red light at march line and divinci crashing into three vehicles. one driver was killed while waiting for the light to change. the other two drivers were taken to the hospital. one seriously hurt. the 17-year-old was also taken to the hospital and is under arrest. new at noon, oakland students taking to the streets

today to support their teachers who voted this week to authorize a strike. kpix's anne makovec has more. >> reporter: it hits the district where it hurts. the district loses money for every student that's absent and in this case that's hundreds. [ chanting ]. these students say they're marching to support their teachers who have voted to authorize a strike that could happen in less than two weeks. teachers want more pay, smaller class sizes, and more nurses and counselors on staff. >> i want to be here in an environment that's amazing and has all the right money put into take the twoisice. >> when we come out in a big group like this for a good reason we can make a big impact on an issue we care about. >> reporter: the district it ddu

a $30 million shortfall. the superintendent is working on a city wide plan for school closure to get its budget online. >> usc has been grossly mismanaging the funds for year and we're seeing this impact and in our education and our teachers unsuccessfully being able to teach. >> i think there may be a disconnect on what they think and what the reality is. >> reporter: the district spokesperson says they support the students' action. >> the fact they're leading an effort for something they believe in shows the brilliance of our young people. >> reporter: the principal sent an e-mail students would be marked as unexcused today but she also said in part the support okay land teachers are eomty is heart warming oakle movec, kpix look at the rn raphael bridge.

pretty smooth sailing, nothing like yesterday when falling concrete closed the bridge causing traffic backups well into the evening. work to begin permanent repairs is scheduled for this weekend. new video this afternoon of federal investigators at the scene of wednesday's firery gas line explosion in san francisco. this is near the laurel heights neighborhood. a team from the national transportation safety board is out there today. they have scheduled a news conference at 4:00 p.m. we'll stream that live on kpix.com. right now, a firing hearing is underway as president trump's acting attorney general, matthew whittaker clashes with democrats on the house judiciary committee. taking a live look at the hearing right now, democrats are pressing whittaker on his oversight of special counsel robert mueller's investigation into russian meddling in 2016. the exchanges got heated at times with several lawmakers reprimanding whittaker for dodging their questions. >> have you ever been asked to approve any request or action to be taken by the special counsel?

a crucifix is the st. patrick's church. police say she caused $15,000 in damage. despite the vandalism she's not being charged with a hate crime. the woman is charged with defacing property, burglary, and vandalizing a place of worship. check this out, snow is once agchop 5 giving us those pretty shots of mount hamilton, blanketed in snow. this weekend we've got some rain. >> that's right. we are tracking a couple weather systems that'll bring the rain for us. we're already seeing that now and then as we head through the weekend, we're tracking another storm system to roll in. that'll bring the rain and also drop snow levels down to the highest peaks this weekend across the bay area. we could see a little bit of snow. here is high def doppler and you can see that rain moving in along the coast, the north bay, across the peninsula, and some sprinkles and light rain pushing across the golden gate into san francisco, into the financial

district there, right along the bay bridge and down through the bay view district, as well. and asnnd we're watching that look e cam, temperatures are in the 40s and 50s. also for santa rosa, 52 l at san francisco at 50 there and 53 for san jose. so there is that area of low pressure that is going to bring that rain for us widespread rain as we head through the afternoon and looking at a wet afternoon and evening commute. we have off and on showers for saturday and also for sunday, as well and by sunday we could see snow levels dropping down to about 3,000 feet, maybe 2,000. again the highest peaks in the bay area could see a little bit of snow. our futurecast rainfall amounts as we go through at least our first weather system for today, picking up anywhere from a quarter to three quarters of an inch of rain and through

the weekend, with our next storm system, we are looking at as much as an inch of rain, maybe an inch and a quarter for santa cruz area. a storm for the sierra, so looking at 4:00 p.m. today until 4:00 a.m. monday, so through the weekend heavy snow expected above 2,500 feet. snowfall anywhere from 3 to 5 feet of snow. here's what you can expect that sunset at 5:41, sunrise at 7:06, and here's the high temperatures. upper 40s to low-to-mid-50s, so another cool day with below average temperatures for this time of the year. if you are heading to the giants fest tomorrow at oracle park we are looking at some showers with temperatures in the low-to-mid-50s. definitely bring the rain jacket and that umbrella because you'll need it with off and on showers. for the weekend off and on, looking at a break on monday and more wet weather for the middle part oft wha lot? >> right. for dry all day. but for the weekend they'll -- they'll be some breaks.

to the days of purple cauliflower. look at this color. before i talk about it, the more you cook it, the color may go away. so don't cook it too much otherwise the color evaporates from them. so stir fry them just a little bit and that's it. if you steam them, the color may be going bye-bye. so let's talk about selection. a nice light purple color all the way around. very important. and it's got to feel nice and fresh. when you turn it around where it's been cut you want to make sure it's free from any browning or cracking right here. and of course store them in the refrigerator right away. shelf life a few days. in the refrigerator, four to five days. don't store them too long and they're great for us. purple cauliflower, it's just fun to talk
