[ cheers ] good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. today a virginia lawmaker plans to initiate impeachment proceedings against lieutenant governor justin fairfax. it is the latest trouble to hit the top leadership in the state. meanwhile, virginia governor ralph northam told "cbs this morning" co-host gayle king he's not going anywhere in the wake of a yeabroke photo. that's why i'm not going anywhere. >> reporter: more than a week after admit he wore blackface in college, he told "cbs this morning's" gayle king he intends to finish his term. >> yes, i have thought about resigning. i've also thought about what virginia needs right now. and i -- i really think that i'm in a position where i can take virginia to the next level.

and that it will be very positive. >> reporter: the governor said he has grown since this picture appeared on his 1984 yearbook page. he said the same about attorney general mark herring's use of blackface. northam refused to call for the resignation of lieutenant governor justin fairfax, accused of sexual assault by two women. fairfax says he's innocent. >> i think we need to get to the truth. the truth is important. and certainly if -- >> he, too, is calling for an investigation. >> he is th >> he is, and i support that. if the accusations are determined to be true, i don't think he's going to have any other option but to resign. >> reporter: last week it looked like fairfax would succeed north amtr amtrak as governor. he's -- northam as governors. heha no call but for resignation. rig >> reporter: if he doesn't resign, there will be articles of impeachment against him on

monday. richmond, virginia. ahead only on "cbs this morning," more of gayle king's interview with virginia governor ralph northam. president trump is holding a rally in el paso, texas, tonight, as he makes his case for funding for a border wall. the white house is not ruling out another government shutdown if a compromise is not reached by friday. lawmakers negotiating a deal disagree over a number of issues. former democratic texas representative beto o'rourke is considering a run for president and holding his own immigration rally today about a mile from the president's rally. the feels of democratic presidential contenders has grown. minnesota senator amy klobuchar launched hear campaign, while elizabeth warren formally announced her presidential bid. marc liverman is here with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the list of presidential candidates seems to be growing by the day. some have gone straight on the attack against president trump. he, too, wasted no time punching back.

>> i stand before you as the granddaughter of an ironer mooiner. >> reporter: the rate for presidency got more crowded. sunday democratic senator amy klobuchar made her announcement. a day earlier, senator elizabeth warren threw her hat into the ring. >> i stand here today to declare that i am a candidate for president of the united states. [ cheers ] >> reporter: warren spent sunday campaigning in iowa and didn't waste any time attacking president trump. she addressed robert mueller's ongoing russia investigation. >> by the time we get to 2020, donald trump may not even be president. [ applause ] he may not even be a free person. >> reporter: president trump took notice, and on twitter went after both senators. he again derided senator warren for claims she's part native american and mocked senator klobuchar for talking about global warming in a snowstorm.

two other presidential candidates spent the weekend campaigning in south carolina. u.s. senators cory booker and kerstin gillibrand were both preaching a message of unity. >> we're not just a red america or blue america, but we're red, white, and blue america. >> i'm going to govern and call that the way you get ahead is by tearing other people down. >> reporter: there are now ten official candidates for president. there are five women officially running for president in 2020, half the total field. it's been an historic 12 month for women in politics. the number of them serving in congress is now the highest it's been in u.s. history. anne-marie? >> interesting times. marc spreading toward california, the midwest, and slamming parts of the east

coast with snow and rain. a weekend storm made for treacherous travel across the midwest. seven people were hurt in a crash involving 40 vehicles on senate 94 in wisconsin. some people took advantage of the snow and had a little fun. a fire destroyed a frat house nearly georgia college campus. authorities say the fire broke out last night at the theta ki house in millageville. the house is shown fully engulfed in flames. no one was hurt. no word on the cause. a woman's abduction is caught on camera, and new questions in the jeff bezos messaging scandal. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the daily beast" reports the brother of jeff bezos' mistress, launch sanchez, leaked the couple's private texts to the "national enquirer." "the daily beast" says multiple sources inside the publisher of the "enquirer," ami, say michael sanchez supplied the texts to

the tabloid. michael sanchez reportedly has personal and business ties to prominent figures linked to president trump. ami has refused to identify the source of the texts and declined comment to the "daily beast." michael sanchez also declined comment. besz accuses ami of trying to blackmail him. "the miami herald" reports the woman whose abduction was caught on video is safe. the unidentified woman went into a tire shop friday to get away from a man. miami police released the video yesterday. a tire shop employee who didn't want to be identified witnessed the incident. >> takes her from the restroom and -- she's like 20 or 50 times. >> the man forced the woman into a car and then drove away. the worker says the woman was in tears and said she needed to hide because she feared for her life. police say they found the woman last night in good condition. they did not release her name or the name of her abductor.

"the denver post" says all city schools will be open today as teachers go on strike for the first time in 25 years. they say the schools will be staffed by administrators and substitutes. classes for preschoolers do not have enough staff to take carem. several consumer goods companies including procter & is ballpark, cole gatt and palmolive have or will raise prices. companies are hosting to offset costs for raw material and transportation as well as boost profits. expect higher prices for such items as pampers and huggies diapers, bounty, and viva towels, and charmin and scott toilet paper. and our partners at the bbc say the movie "the favorite"

million breast cancer deaths have been prevented thanks to screenings and advances in treatment. >> the amount of lives that are being saved is absolutely remarkable. >> reporter: those advances include better understanding of the science behind the disease and targeted treatments. when to start breast cancer screening and how often has become a source of debate. the american cancer society suggests women 40 to 44 should have a choice to start annual mammograms. women 45 to 54 should be screened every year. dr. kchnable at nyu center says women should know their breast cancer risk. >> screening plays a large role in early detection of breast cancer. to allow the patients who are diagnosed early to have better and more favorable treatment methods. >> reporter: for nicky, that meant avoiding chemotherapy. she chose to have a double mastectomy and reconstruction. she often shares her story with other women. >> look, in my case, it saved my
