one of their strike. i'm michelle griego. >> i'm ken ken. teachers demanding higher pay and smaller class sizes, they've been picketing since early this morning and holding a rally right now. the march to the school district headquarters near by. >> we have team coverage on the oakland teachers strike. kiet do looking at the impact the strike is having on thousands of students and parents. first anne makevec is live with the teacher rally and march on day one, anne. >> reporter: yeah, hundreds of people have gathered here right outside oakland city hall, we are talking teachers, parents and students leaving local schools empty right now. the teachers here to reiterate their demands and then they are planning to walk to the district office on broadway to make sure their voices are heard. oakland teachers among the lowest paid in almeda county. with salaries ranging from 46

to $85,000. and today they are fighting for more. >> we have stood up and said enough is enough. >> teachers are asking for a 12% raise over 3 years, the district's latest offer is an 8.5% raise over 4 years. >> we've looked forward to hearing a counter proposal from them. >> the union also wants smaller class sizes and a better counselor student ratio. 3000 teachers are picketing outside of 86 schools. >> we would much rather be in our classrooms working with our students, this is a last resort and unfortunate it's come to this. >> maintaining they simply don't have enough money to meet those demands they are working on a plan to close schools because of low enrollment. >> we have to balance all that we want and can give them with

against what we have. >> today mayor libby shaft wore do you think the district ldcome back with another offer of more money for the teacher as soon as. >> our teachers also have to operate within a fiscally solvent district. >> she says both sides should move to the middle. do you have any concerns for the city if this is a prolonged strike? >> absolutely. our city cannot function without our children in schools learning, getting their education. >> there is no telling how long the strike will last. >> reporter: backsee our shot f chopper 5. it's just packed with people. in fact, this is the largest gathering i have ever seen in

this plaza. again, teachers, students and parents all gather here. they came from their individual picket lines at many of the different schools and gathered here for one big rally at noon. and then they are possibly walking or many will be walking to the school district office right after this. negotiations, there is a meeting scheduled for tomorrow morning between the union and the school district. but that is tomorrow so that means at least one more day of disruption. anne makevec, kpix5. >> thank you,. east bay congresswoman barbara lee saying i stand with the teachers, they stand a living way and tools they need. the strike affects tens of thousands of students, some have nowhere else to go when their parents leave for wo o isoakland with the concerns about the days ahead. >> reporter: so there are more than 36,000 kids in the oakland

unified school district, some are literally wandering around with nothing to do. the good thing for them and for parents is that there are options. we found michael james all alone outside the golden gate recreation center, he is a freshman at oakland high school. the staff spotted him and brought him inside here he has access to a computer lab, snacks and the gym. the city of oakland opened up 16 community centers as an affordable daycare option. >> now you are stuck here at the rec center? >> yeah. >> reporter: kids can also get dropped off at solidarity schools. teacher jasmine came it's a tea have fun, a e in a big moment of history so it's still teaching theater they are offering strike specials a dollar for 2

francisco have lifted a shelter in place order following a gasoline break in the soma district. this is in the area of 7th and brine street was wording to pg&e a third party construction crew hit the line around 10:00 this morning. crew were able to shut off the flow of gas an hour ago. a vacaville family is lucky to be alive. massive flames engulfed the home. each family member made it out safely and the cause of the fire is now under investigation. he went from being the alleged victim a hate crime to being arrested jussie smollett turned himself in to police overnight. kenneth craig reports the actor is accused of staging the whole thing to further his career. >> chicago police released the mug shot of actor jussie smollett, hours after he turned himself in on charges he filed a false police report.

>> actor jussie smollett took advantage of the pain and an of racism to promote his career. >> police say the empire star lied when he said two men attacked him last month shouting racist and homophobic slurs claiming he describe in detail. >> he said, this maga country and punches me right in the face. >> police say they are offended and angry at the publicity stunt. first sent himself a racist amount homophobic letter, he stabled the attack. they offered a motive for smollett's actions. >> orchestrated by smollett because he was dissatisfied with his salary. >> eventually two brothers linked to smollett told investigators the actor paid them to stage the attack. cbs chicago station wbbm obtained surveillance video

that shows the brothers buying a red cap, gloves and a ski mask the day before smollett claimed he was assaulted. >> the brothers are cooperating with police and have not been charged. smollett lawyers released a statement saying their client enjoys the presumption of innocence, facing a $25,000 fine and to you 3 years in prison. kenneth craig, cbs news. smollett is expected to appear in court for a bond hearing this afternoon. the studio behind the show empire 20th century fox issued a statement saying it is evaluating the situation and considering its options. special council robert mueller's probe on russian interference in the 2016 election appears to be wrapping up. submitting his report as soon as tomorrow. the report will for sure be submitted by mid march before deputy attorney general rod rosenstein leaves the department, the public will not be able to see the full report.
