good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. it's a side of singer r. kelly that we rarely see. in his first tv interview since been arrested for sexual abuse, the singer broke down in tears and says he's fighting for his life. kelly sat down with "cbs this morning" co-anchor gayle king for an emotional conversation in which he declared his innocence. laura podesta's here in new york with the dramatic interview. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. singer/songwriter r. kelly, known for hits like "i believe i can fly," sat down with gayle for an hour and 20 minutes yesterday. it's the first interview kelly has given since being charged with sexual assault abuse last month. >> this is not me. i'm fighting for my [ bleep ] life! >> reporter: in an interview with "cbs this morning's" gayle

king, embattled r&b singer r. kelly denied charges that sexually abused four people, three of them underage girls. >> is this camera on me? >> yes, it's on you -- >> that's stupid. use your common sense. don't -- forget the blogs, forget how you feel about me, hate me if you want to, love me if you want. use your common sense. how stupid would it be for me to -- with my crazy past and what i've been through, oh, right now i think i need to be a monster and hold girls against their will, chain them up in my basement. >> reporter: last month kelly pleaded not guilty to ten counts of aggravated sexual abuse dating as far back as 1998. kelly was acquitted of child pornography charges in 2008. >> i'm talking about the other cases where women have come forward and said "r. kelly had sex with me when i was under the age of 18." "r. kelly was abusive to me, emotionally and physically and verbally." "r. kelly took me in a black

recovery efforts. a twister swept through lee county on sunday killing at least 23 people. a mother whose son died when the tornado hit described the terrifying ordeal. >> i heard all the kids screaming, and i tried to hold them a little tighter. and that's when i just -- the whole floor like just snapped from under us. >> four children were among the dead. the list of missing is now down to seven or eight people. london's transportation hubs are on alert this morning after police found a series of explosives. investigators say three devices were sent in small packages to buildings at or near heathrow airport, london city airport, and waterloo train station. in one instance, a package burst into flames when it was opened. no one was hurt, though. flights were not affected, and police are taking this very seriously.

>> fairly unsophisticated at the moment. counterterror command will be investigating this. i think i've said already, keep an open mind on this. >> scotland yard believes the incidents are linked and are working with police. michael cohen returns to capitol hill today testifying in private before the house intelligence committee. this will be the fourth day president trump's former lawyer has gone before lawmakers. house democrats are pursuing investigations related to the white house, the president's businesses, and his 2016 campaign. during testimony last week, cohen called mr. trump a con man and a cheat. new york state regulators have subpoenaed president trump's insurance broker following testimony from michael cohen. cohen claimed mr. trump exaggerated his wealth to insurance companies. the president still owns his businesses, although he's handed day-to-day control over to sons don jr. and eric, and longtime executive allen weisselberg. all of them are recipients of document requests from the house judiciary committee.

and now to north korea where satellite images reportedly show activity at a missile site. south korea's news agency and two american think tanks say part of the site has been restored recently. the facility has been dormant since last year. the u.s. state department did not immediately comment. last week's nuclear summit in vietnam came to an abrupt end with no deal being reached. a teenager who defied his mother by getting vaccinated took his argument to capitol hill. ethan lindenberger testified before congress about the importance of vaccines, and it comes at a time when lawmakers are working to stop outbreaks of preventable diseases that seem to be sweeping the nation. dr. tara narula reports. >> reporter: sitting along prominent health professionals was an unlikely witness. >> my mother would turn to anti-vaccine groups on line and on social media -- >> reporter: ohio high school senior ethan lindenberger testified about his fight with his own mother to get vaccinated. >> for my mother, her love,

affection, and care as a parent was used to push an agenda to create a false distress -- >> reporter: we first met lindenberger last month when he told us his mother refused to vaccinate him and his siblings because of fears about vaccine safety. he started getting vaccinated when he turned 18. >> for certain individuals and organizations that spread misinformation, they instill fear into the public for their own gain selfishly and do so knowing that their information is incorrect. >> reporter: 17 states allow parents to opt out of vaccinations for nonmedical reasons. lack of vaccinations have been blamed for measles outbreaks in five states. one of the worst in washington state. washington state's secretary of health dr. john weissman -- >> states and local health departments really are the leaders to engage their communities around vaccine information. and honestly, that system's crumbling. >> reporter: to prop up the system and combat false information about vaccines, this week the american academy of

a herd of about 700 elk caught on video crossing a snowy road in oregon. the state's department of fish and wildlife posted the video from sunday. wildlife officials say march is always the most challenging month for big game trying to survive the winter. they say it's been tougher this year because of record snowfall and below freezing temperatures. reality star kylie jenner has a new status, and a house vote condemning anti-semitism is delayed. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the hill" says house democratic leaders are delaying a vote on a resolution rebuking fellow democrat minnesota freshman representative ilhan omar. it comes after omar's controversial comments about israel at an event last week. she suggested that israel's supporters are pushing u.s. lawmakers to take a pledge of allegiance to a foreign country. the vote on a resolution condemning anti-semitism and bigotry was supposed to take place today. it is being updated to include a

reference to anti-muslim bias and could come up for a vote on thursday. "politico" reports on a poll indicating 64% of americans believe donald trump committed crimes before he became president. the quinnipiac poll was taken after mr. trump's former lawyer, michael cohen, testified before congress. people are split on whether they believe the president has committed crimes while in office. when asked who they believe more, half said they trust cohen, while 35% believe mr. trump. the "los angeles times" reports california's santa anita horse racing track has canceled racing indefinitely after the 21st horse died there since december 26th. a 4-year-old filly injured her leg yesterday during training and was euthanized. the track will be closed for additional testing of its dirt surface. it was closed for two days of testing last week but declared fit for racing. animal rights activists protested outside the racetrack

yesterday calling for an end to horse racing. >> if everything was safe, then we wouldn't have these horses, these dead horses on our hands here alone. but we don't.. but putting them in that situation is unsafe. i'd like that to stop. >> two major races that were supposed to be held at the track this weekend are being rescheduled. "forbes" says 21-year-old kylie jenner is the youngest self-made billionaire ever. jenner is the sole owner of kylie cosmetics which "forbes" says is worth at least $900 million. she hits the billion-dollar mark when cash that she already has taken from the business is factored in. jenner started the company in 2015. the former youngest billionaire was facebook ceo mark zuckerberg. he became a billionaire when he was 23. the "wall street journal" reports an ex-adidas executive was sentenced to nine months in prison in a basketball bribery case. jim gatto was sentenced for his role in a scheme to bribe the families of top high school basketball players to persuade

people suffering from severe depression have new hope this morning. the fda has approved the first new class of depression medicine in decades. it's a nasal spray version of ketamine which had been a party drug. it's used in anesthesia. the new johnson & johnson medicine acts on different brain chemicals than older anti-depressants like prozac. when it works it takes effect almost instantly. on the cbs "money watch" now, a safety warning for make-up from claire's, and a new condiment for barbecue sauce lovers. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. well, today the federal reserve will release its latest report on economic conditions across the u.s. it is expected to show businesses are concerned about the state of the economy.

key earnings reports scheduled for today include abercrombie & fitch, dollar tree, and american eagle. on wall street the dow closed down 13 yesterday. the s&p lost three, and the nasdaq shed one. fda commissioner dr. scott gottlieb will resign next month. he cited the challenge of being apart from his family. gottlieb has led the agency's response to the opioid epidemic and has recently been cracking down on teen vaping. his replacement has not been announced. meanwhile, the fda is advising consumers against using certain make-up products from claire's as they could be contaminated with asbestos. tests on eye shadows, compact powder, and contour palette were found to have asbestos. consumers who have these products should stop using the products identified by the fda from its stores, quote, out of an abundance of caution. the ceo of southwest says the airline is losing millions of dollars a week over a labor dispute.

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ i saw this bee hive and said, oh, my goodness, i'm allergic to bees. >> people are buzzing in hollywood because of a massive bee hive above a heavily traveled street. the hive is in a tree about 25 feet above ground on hollywood boulevard. the experts say that there could be as many as 100,000 bees in the hive. locals say it's been there for at least five months, and authorities have been notified. a seven-day cruise from new york to the bahamas turned terrifying when it was rocked by hurricane-force wind gusts.

american veterans at the white house signing, but overall says many vets aren't getting the treatment they need. >> i believe the system is focused on making people unsick rather than making them well. trying to tell them that they're okay, that life is worth living, but we're not actually helping them live that life. >> reporter: the president's executive order creates a new task force that has one year come up with a detailed plan. part of that plan will focus on building public/private partnerships to address the issue. psychologist barbara van dalem's nonprofit group, given hour, is a nationwide network of volunteers focused on mental health resources. she hopes progress preventing veteran suicide will help all americans. >> this is one of those opportunities. if we do this right, we could start to chip away at suicide in general. >> reporter: several states have been chosen for grants including texas, virginia, colorado, and new hampshire. natalie brand, cbs news, the white house. coming up, a new report from the better business bureau how
