trebek says he has stage-four pancreatic cancer. his fight against the disease. ♪ good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you, i'm anne-marie green. singer r. kelly is back in jail this morning in chicago after failing to pay child support. this comes as a new accusation surfaced that kelly allegedly had sex with a teenage girl in detroit nearly two decades ago. detroit police say they are investigating. meanwhile, kelly maintained his innocence against sexual abuse charges in an explosive interview with "cbs this morning" co-host gayle king. his live-in girlfriends are coming to his defense, and their families are responding, too. laura podesta is covering all of this from here in new york. laura, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. just hours after the emotional interview aired yesterday, r. kelly was taken into police

custody in chicago for a different crime -- not paying his share of child support. authorities say he must stay in jail until the full amount is paid, but kelly says the other allegations surrounding him are making it impossible for him to work. r. kelly will remain behind bars until he can pay $161,000 in child support to his children's mother. >> they wanted the entire amount. >> reporter: kelly's publicist says the r&b singer doesn't have the money because he can't work. >> can't book shows, can't do anything. at the end of the day, he's locked up, the kids still don't have anything. >> reporter: last month kelly was charged with sexually abusing four women, three of them under age. he denied the accusations in an interview with gayle king. >> tell me with this [ bleep ] -- [ bleep ] >> robert? >> y'all trying to kill me. you're telling me that -- this

is not about music. relationship with my kids! >> reporter: the family of joycelyn savage, one two of women who lived with kelly, believe she's being held against her will. >> we went from seeing you or talking to you daily or weekly to not seeing you in two years. so that is a clear indication to us and as a mother that something's definitely wrong. >> reporter: what is your with them? >> i love them, and it's like they're my girlfriends. >> reporter: king also spoke with savage and azriel clary. they say their parents are just trying to get money from kelly. >> this is all [ bleep ] for money. if you can't see that, you're ignorant, and you're stupid. >> reporter: the families have denied asking for or receiving kelly's next hearing in the child support case is march 13th. the next court date for the sex abuse charges is march 22nd. >> thank you so much, laura.

ahead only on "cbs this morning," more of gayle king's interview with r. kelly and his two live-in girlfriends who are coming to the singer's defense. tomorrow, gayle king will host a primetime special at 8:00, 7:00 central on cbs. the u.s. air force says it's appalled and deeply sorry after senator martha mcsally said that she was raped by a superior officer. mcsally made the revelations during a senate hearing on sexual assault in the military. nancy cordes reports. i was ashamed and confused. and i thought i was strong, but felt powerless. >> reporter: arizona republican martha mcsally stunned her senate colleagues, describing how she was sexually assaulted more than once during her 26-year career in the u.s. air force.trabusheir position of power in profound ways. and in one case, i was preyed upon and then raped by a

superior officer. i stayed silent -- >> reporter: mcsally was the first female fighter pilot to fly in combat. >> now i deployed to d.c. to fight for arizona. the she wasppointed to the senate in december to fill the seat formerly held by the late john mccain. >> i was horrified at how my attempt to share generally my experiences were handled. i almost separated from the air force at 18 years over my despair. like many victims, i felt the system was raping me all over again. >> reporter: she is part of a growing sorority. lawmakers who have come forward to say "me, too." >> the chief of staff held my face, kissed me, and stuck his tongue in my mouth. >> reporter: mcsally said she's going public now in the hopes it will lead to reform. >> i share the disgust of the failures of the military system

and many commanders who failed in their responsibilities. >> reporter: after that hearing, the air force released a statement saying that it is appalled and deeply sorry for the criminal acts mcsally endured. reports of sexual assault across the military have jumped by 10% in just one year. nancy cordes, cbs news, capitol hill. lawyers for michael cohen say that the president's former lawyer asked them to inquire about the possibility of a potential pardon, contradicting his testimony before congress last week. cohen wrapped up a fourth day of testimony yesterday before the house intelligence committee. he turned over documents to lawmakers that allegedly show mr. trump's lawyers helped with his false testimony to congress. cohen said mr. trump's attorneys reviewed and edited the written statement he provided to lawmakers in 2017. and the search for survivors following a deadly tornado in

alabama has enwine the last of the missing were found alive. 23 people were killed when a tornado touched down sunday. alabama's governor has ordered in honor of the victims. officials said so many donations were made the victims' funerals will be paid for. power has been restored to the area. the tornado was the deadliest to hit the u.s. in nearly six years. alex trebek vows that he will fight and beat his recent diagnosis of advanced pancreatic cancer. the longtime "jeopardy!" host said while his prognosis is not encouraging, he's not giving up. fellow game show host pat sajak tweeted, "there is no one i know who is stronger and more determined, and i would never bet against him. we and the entire country are pulling for you, alex." tony dokoupil reports. >> reporter: trebek delivered the shocking news with his signature poise -- sge-four pan

stalled the project, and many buyers have pulled out. back home there's an effort to lower the voting age, and a legal challenge from a chinese tech giant. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "wall street journal" reports chinese tech firm huawei is suing the u.s. over a law labeling the company a security risk. federal agencies are restricted from doing business with it. the lawsuit asks the federal court to invalidate a part of this year's military appropriations act. it bars the trump administration and government contractors from using huawei equipment. it's the latest move in an ongoing battle between the chinese company and the u.s. government. huawei denies that it helps china spy. the cleveland "plain dealer" reports gm shut down its plant in lordstown, ohio, after more than half a century in business. the last chevy cruz compact car rolled off the line yesterday. it's the first of five north ut to close by early next year as part of a massive restructuring. g.m. is eliminating all 1,700 hourly positions at the factory,

we'll hear from costco and kroger. investors will be watching these grocery giants closely as competition increases. last week amazon announced plans to launch another dozen or so grocery stores in major u.s. cities nationwide. here on wall street, the losing streak continues. the dow closed down 133 points yesterday. the s&p 500 lost 18, and the nasdaq dropped 70. facebook ceo mark zuckerberg has a new plan to improve privacy for facebook. zuckerberg wants to shift focus to encrypted private communications across its messaging services and better protecting user data. this comes amid backlash over troublesome privacy controls and the cambridge analytica scandal. amazon is closing all of its popup stores in the u.s. amazon has 87 popup locations inside whole foods, kohl's stores, and malls. the stores let customers try and buy its products and services. the "wall street journal" reports they will close at the end of april.

the closings come as amazon ptakes new steps to offer a widr variety of products. the company is expanding its re still more closings to tell you about. up to 390 family dollar stores will close nationwide. dollar tree is rebranding another roughly 200 others under the dollar tree name. there are more than 8,000 stores in the u.s. dollar tree bought family dollar in 2015 hoping to grow its customer base, reduce costs, and fend off bigger retailers like dollar general and walmart. but family dollar has struggled, and dollar tree's stock price has slipped since the deal. and there will soon be one blockbuster store left on the entire planet. the store in bend, oregon, became the last one in the u.s. last year. a blockbuster in perth, australia, is closing later this month. blockbuster stores in alaska closed last year. the once-booming chain was once

a terminally ill connecticut prident trump was able to get a bucket list wish fulfilled with the help of his democratic sister. 44-year-old jay berrett has cystic fibrosis. he asked for some sort of contact with mr. trump before he dies. his sister, a democratic west haven city councilwoman, went on social media to help, and it worked. the president called berrett on tuesday. mr. trump told him he's a champ, and that he's proud of him. >> it lets you know that all set aside, we still bleed red, you know. we come from the same country, we might have different paths and politics, different ideas, but why can't we just get along? >> even though berrett is supposed to have only six months to live, he that's he intends to be around to vote in 2020. so coming up on "cbs this morning," the seafood you eat may not be what you think it is. how ithe morning news."

omar villafranca has the story of a family that ended up in hospitals 100 miles apart. >> reporter: ben robertson has never flown on an airplane. >> first time i ever flown was on a tornado. >> reporter: that ride broke the 34-year-old's leg and ankle but not his spirit. >> ever since this happened, i have not been sad, upset, angry or anything. >> reporter: because your two biggest things in your life are alive? >> i'm thankful everything's okay. >> reporter: his wife, megan robertson, is recovering from a broken hip at another hospital as is his 5-year-old son eli. we were there when they spoke on video chat for the first time since the tornado hit. >> hey, buddy. >> hi. >> how are you feeling? >> oh, he's fine. >> reporter: eli will be out of the hospital this week. >> he's been up and adam. >> i'm sure he has. >> reporter: all ben remembers is that seconds before the tornado hit, he was in the bathroom holding on to his wife
