here in new york. good to be with you, i'm anne-marie green. president trump's former campaign chairman paul manafort has been sentenced to nearly four years in prison. manafort was convicted of tax and bank fraud. it was the highest profile criminal case mounted by special counsel robert mueller. the punishment is far lighter than what was recommended under sentencing guidelines. laura podesta is here in new york with whether a pardon could be in manafort's future. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yes, manafort could be looking at another 20 years behind bars if this judge had not so drastically shortened his sentence. despite the tax and bank fraud convictions, judge t.s. ellis said manafort led an otherwise blameless life and called him a campaign chairman paul manafort was sentenced thursday to nearly four years in prison. it's the longest sentence handed

down as part of special counsel robert mueller's investigation into russian interference in the 2016 election. the 69-year-old was convicted on eight counts of tax and bank fraud related to his work for ukrainian politicians. >> there is absolutely no evidence that paul manafort was involved with any collusion, with any government official from russia. >> reporter: a source tells cbs news manafort is banking on a presidential pardon. >> i think the whole manafort trial is very sad. >> reporter: last august mr. trump said it was not off the table. >> he worked for me for a very short period of time. but you know what, he happens to be a very good person. >> reporter: the 47-month sentence is far less than the 24 years manafort could have gotten. judge t.s. ellis said that was unwarranted and excessive. >> we have a criminal justice system that treats you better if you're rich and guilty than if you're poor and innocent. >> reporter: democratic presidential candidate cory booker reacted to the sentencing during a taping of "the late show with stephen colbert."

>> were you shocked that he only got 47 months -- >> no, the criminal justice system can't surprise me anymore. >> reporter: the reaction was similar on social media with lawyers and advocates pointing out lesser crimes that ended with harsher sentences. and it's not over for manafort just yet. next week he faces another sentencing in washington, d.c., in a separate case related to illegal lobbying. that judge will decide whether manafort serves his two sentences at the same time or whether they should be served consecutively. anne-marie? >> all right. laura podesta in new york. thanks a lot. on capitol hill, the house passed a resolution condemning anti-semitism and other bigotry. it passed easily in a 407-23 vote. all the no votes came from republicans. the resolution was drawn up as a response to freshman representative ilhan omar who had suggested house supporters of israel have dual allegiances. the minnesota democrat was not named in the final version of

the resolution. omar, who voted for the resolution, has not apologized for her comment, though she has previously apologized for controversial tweets. lawyers for michael cohen say president trump's advisers dangled the possibility of a pardon. lanny davis says cohen was open to the idea after the fbi raided cohen's home, office, and hotel room last year. cohen is also suing the trump organization. president trump's former attorney says the company is obligated to pay his legal bills which total near $4 million. cbs news has learned former vice president joe biden is very likely to enter the race for president. biden is expected to launch his presidential campaign next month. people familiar with his plans tell cbs news that he's putting the finishing touches on a campaign team and strategy. this will be the third time biden has made a pl dentreia if he were to win, he would be the oldest elected u.s. president in history at the age of 78.

federal prosecutors in illinois may seek the death penalty for a man accused of shooting and killing a sheriff's deputy. deputy jacob keltner was serving an arrest warrant at a hotel in rockford yesterday about 90 miles east of chicago. police say the suspect, floyd brown, barricaded himself inside the room, firing a shotgun out of the window. keltner was hit and taken to the hospital where he died. brown got away, leading police on a chase that ended in a crash 170 miles away. he was arrested after an hour's long standoff with police. the wisconsin man charged with kidnapping 13-year-old jayme closs is reportedly planning to plead guilty. a tv station in minnesota is reporting that jake patterson wrote a letter to a correspondent saying that he wanted to plead guilty because he didn't want closs' family to worry about a trial. patterson is accused of holding closs for 88 days in a cabin after kidnapping her last october. she escaped in january. patterson is also charged with killing her parents.

singer r. kelly could be released from a chicago jail as early as today. a judge put him back behind bars earlier this week for not paying child support. this comes as two of kelly's accusers are reacting to his comments in an interview with gayle king. jericka duncan has more on that. >> reporter: on "cbs this morning," gayle king asked the r&b singer about the state of his finances. >> how can i pay child support? how? if my ex-wife is destroying my name and i can't work? >> reporter: two of r. kelly's accusers are speaking out following his explosive interview with gayle king earlier this week. >> y'all killing me with this [ bleep ]. [ beep ] >> robert? robert? >> y'all trying to kill me. you're killing me, man. >> reporter: asante mcgee, one

of r. kelly's accusers described how difficult it was for her to watch the interview. >> when he started screaming it terrified me. so when he started screaming, i immediately turned the tv because, again, i felt like i was revisiting his yelling at me. >> reporter: mcgee says she met r. kelly at a club, and they dated from 2014 to 2016. >> i will put you out my house. >> reporter: in "surviving r. kelly" she talked about being forced to perform unspeakable sex acts in an area called the black room. >> the sect week i was there i was already plotting my escape. >> reporter: she said listening to azriel kelly and joycelyn savage, kelly's current live-in girlfriends, was difficult to listen to, too. >> what was your relationship with r. kelly? >> we're with him. that's our relationship. >> we're with him, that's what it is. >> we're in a relationship with him. you said it. >> a very strong relationship, as well. >> both of you? >> definitely. >> i would get kicked, slapped, punched. >> reporter: we spoke to kitty jones who said she dated r.

kelly from 2011 to 2013. she claims throughout their relationship the singer kicked, slapped, and punched her. she says kelly describing his accusers as liars was no surprise. >> i'm going to name the names -- andrea kelly, your ex-wife, kitty jones, lisa van allen, lissette martinez, jaronda pace, faith rogers, asante mcgee. you're saying everything they said in that documentary about you is not true. >> they are lying on me. >> he thinks in his mind that we've all conspired together to take him down, and the truth is -- it just became a domino effect. >> reporter: jones and mcgee hope kelly's years of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse are over. for them, kelly's interview with gayle king may have been his last act. >> i know he would cry at the drop of a dime. he's a great performer. on and off the stage. >> reporter: jericka duncan, cbs news, chicago.

it's the first u.s.-made spacecraft capable of carrying astronauts to dock at the space station in eight years. nasa has relied on russia for manned rides into space since then. a spacex capsule could take nasa astronauts to the orbiting outpost this summer. an extreme avalanche warning has been issued in colorado, and facebook cracks down on anti-vaccine content. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the new york times" reports on facebook's plans to curb misinformation about vaccines. the social media giant announced that groups and pages that spread misinformation about vaccines will have lower rankings. facebook says that they won't be included in recommendations or predictions during user searches. it says it will not remove incorrect content.t ike in "the denver post" reports c extreme avalanche warning after

the number of avalanches in the state topped 2,000 so far this season. two giant avalanches yesterday near vail and copper mountain forced i-70 to shut down in both directions for several hours. several people had to be rescued after an avalanche on highway 91 buried three vehicles. no one was hurt. so far this season, six people have been killed in avalanches. officials say the danger in the state is historic. >> i'm not really sure how to describe it. it's frightening, amazing, you know, terrifying, kind of all at the same time. >> the average winter season has 3,000 avalanches, but the most active period is still ahead when snow melts. on international women's day, the "washington post" reports on a study that says the u.s.ks 78th t of 193 countries on gender ualityn leat st

the dow closed down 200. the s&p 500 dropped 22, the nasdaq lost 84 points. this morning the labor department will release the have added 180,000 jobs during february. congress expected the unemployment rate to drop 3.9%, the lowest since september. meanwhile, the labor department is proposing expanding overtime eligibility. under the new rule, an additional 1.3 million americans who work more than 40 hours a week would become eligible for overtime pay. the rule would increase the annual salary threshold that determines who qualifies for time and a half pay from about $23,000 a year to $35,308. and corona is getting into the non-beer drink business and will release new tropical flavored booze-spiked drinks. corona re fresca is a flavored malt beverage available in three

august 29th at disney's hollywood studios in florida. disney says the 14-acre attractions will transport visitors to the new planet of batu where they can experience their own "star wars" adventures including visiting a replica of the millennium falcon. an unemployed new jersey man says if it wasn't for a good samaritan he would not have been able to claim a mega millions jackpot of $273 million. mike weirsky says that he bought f f f fwey -- bought two tickets on thursday but accidentally left them at the store. someone found them and gave them to the clerk to hold. weirsky got the tickets the next day and waited for the numbers to be drawn. >> i said to my mother, hey, that just said i was the jackpot winner. she's like, what's that mean? i said, i won $273 million.s lit of here. >> weirsky says he wants to giva new pickup for himself andar for his mom.

let's end this. go to dav.org. our top story this morning, paul manafort has been sentence today to nearly four years in prison in a financial fraud case. it's the longest sentence handed down as part of special counsel robert mueller's russia investigation. the former trump campaign chairman still faces up to ten years in prison for related conspiracy charges in a d.c. case. and the house overwhelmingly passed a resolution condemning hate speech and bigotry. the resolution was a response to comments by democratic congresswoman ilhan omar who had suggested house supporters of israel have dual allegiances. omar is one of the first two muslim women elected to congress last november. she was not named in the final version of the resolution.

the department of justice has brought charges against hundreds of defendants who allegedly target people over the age of 60. it's being called the department's largest ever crackdown on elder fraud schemes. demarco morgan reports. >> reporter: the justice department is taking aim at financial scams targeting older americans. >> this is a particularly despicable crime because of its massive and growing program. >> reporter: the attorney general thursday announced the results of the latest federal crackdown on elder fraud. >> it's despicable because the people involved are vulnerable. because of their stage in life, they don't have the opportunity frequently to recover. >> reporter: in the past year criminal and civil charges have been filed against 260 defendants. >> who allegedly defrauded more than two million americans of more than three quarters of a billion dollars. >> reporter: officials say the scammers will target nearly anyone.
