>> yeah, i love that >> quijano: good evening. i'm elaine quijano. u.s. aviation investigators and a technical team from boeing are headed to ethiopia tonight. that's where a new 737 max eight jetliner crashed today minutes after taking off from addis ababa. eight americans are among the 157 people killed. they include citizens of 30 countries, many of them headed to a united nations environmental conference in nairobi. deborah patta has the latest. >> reporter: "flight delayed" read the bland announcement at nairobi's international airport. however the delay was anything but bland, as news of the worst possible kind reached franc family members. all 149 passengers and eight crew members on board ethiopian airlines flight 302 had died. a grim-faced ethiopian airlines

c.e.o. tewolde gebramariam faced the public. >> we are very, very saddened. our heart is broken. >> reporter: the jet was a new boeing 737 max eight delivered to the airline last year. it's the same type of plane operated by indonesia's lion air that crashed shortly after takeoff last october killing all 189 on board ethiopian airlines ethiopian airlines flight 302 lost contact just six minutes after take-off from the capitol addis ababa when it went down en route to nairobi. according to the flight tracking service flightradar 24, the plane had unstable vertical speed during its ascent. investigators rushed to the crash site- about 30 miles from the ethiopian capital. plane to crash but the pilot was clearly in distress. >> the pilot mentioned that he

had difficulty and he wanted to return. >> reporter: but then they lost all contact with the plane. the u.s. has sent its condolences to everyone impacted by the flight and its embassies in addis ababa and nairobi have offered assistance to the ethiopian government and are liasing with families of those who died when the plane went down. the u.s. also sent four members of the national transportation safety board to ethiopia to assist with the investigation. elaine? >> quijano: deborah, thank you. here in new york nearly 30 people were hurt after a turkish airliner headed to j.f.k. airport flew into extreme turbulence. it happened saturday about 45 minutes before landing. one passenger suffered a broken leg, but most injuries were minor. several democrats hoping to carry the party's flag into the next presidential election tested their ideas this weekend at the south by southwest

festival in austin, texas. here's demarco morgan. >> reporter: at least ten democrats and republicans who want to be president came to the texas state capital this weekend to appear alongside musicians and entrepreneurs at the south by southwest conference. but it was one other potential contender who still looms over the field. former vice president joe biden is expected to launch his presidential campaign next month. >> we're in the final stages of that decision. >> reporter: if he jumps in, biden would be joining a field that already includes 14 democrats. but a new poll of iowa democrats out this weekend puts the former v.p. on top. vermont senator bernie sanders is the only other contender to hit double digits. in austin, cbs's ed o'keefe spoke with democratic candidates about biden potentially joining the race. >> so if he gets in does he draw support from the democrats. >> you need a pundit for that. >> i have respect for vice president biden. >> reporter: former starbucks c.e.o. howard schultz-- who is still pondering a campaign as an

independent-- said biden might help reset a democratic party that he says is drifting too far left. >> i welcome vice president biden in the race, i think his voice will help the party. and i'd love to see the party move more to the center. >> reporter: in the next few weeks, aides tell us biden will be putting the finishing touches on his campaign team and strategy-- and he's set to make public appearances this coming week in washington and his home base of delaware. elaine? >> quijano: demarco, thank you. president trump spent the weekend in florida for a second straight day. the president headed to one of his courses to play golf. his critics in his critics in washington were teeing-off, too. here's erroll barnett. >> what we are looking for is corroborative evidence. >> reporter: today, adam schiff, the chairman of the house intelligence committee, said michael cohen's lies about trump tower moscow have raised questions about president trump's intentions for the project. >> he may believe that when he leaves office, he still wants to build this tower. and while that may not be criminal, it is nonetheless corrupt. >> reporter: cohen begins a

three-year prison sentence in may for lying about the trump tower moscow project as well as finance violations. mister trump said cohen asked him directly about a presidential pardon-- which he turned down. cohen denies making such a request. >> given his checkered past, if he's- if he's breathing he's lying. >> reporter: republican john kennedy, who sits on the senate judiciary committee, told "face the nation" today cohen cannot be trusted. >> i guess i don't blame cohen for asking. it was inappropriate but he shouldn't have lied to congress about it. >> reporter: president trump is also preparing to announce his new budget proposal monday, which will include an increase in defense spending, and 5% cuts across the board in domestic expenditures. democrats are already resisting the president's effort to include border wall funding as well. >> the president was forced to admit defeat and reopen government without getting his wall. the same thing will repeat itself if he tries this again so we hope he's learned his lesson.

>> reporter: larry kudlow, president trump's economic advisor, defended the budget against accusations it would not eliminate the record deficit for 15 years, saying he predicts better than projected economic growth. but with democrats already forcefully opposing this plan, the threat of yet another government shutdown remains. elaine? >> quijano: errol, thank you. the zoo calls it a human error but a woman seeking to take a selfie with a jaguar has learned the hard way that barriers should not be crossed. here's ileana diaz. >> reporter: this woman's visit to an arizona zoo turned into a dangerous close encounter. several eyewitnesses saw the bit.entifi ber ajagu she was standing against the fence taking a photo-- when the jaguar clawed her arm. adam wilkerson and his mother witnessed the incident and jumped in to help. >> my mom runs up and takes her

water bottle and she shoves it through the cage near where the jaguar is. and the jaguar goes to let go of the girl. and i pulled her back. >> witnesses say the woman was left with cuts on her arm. the zoo staff member called 911. >> the arm is in pretty bad shape. >> reporter: and the woman was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. in a tweet wildlife world zoo officials confirmed at no time was the animal out of its enclosure. >> people need to understand that these barriers are here. they need to respect them and when something like this happens it's a reminder to everyone that these are wild animals and safety needs to be their number one concern. >> the woman was released from the hospital and met with the zoo owner today. she apologized for the bad publicity and admitted she was in the wrong. zoo officials tell us that the jaguar will not be euthanized. elaine? >> quijano: ileana, thank you.

there are new accusations today against singer r. kelly. they come just one day after he was released from a chicago jail after failing to pay child support.a ncan is there. >> reporter: just one day after r&b singer r. kelly was released from jail in his child support case... >> we're gonna straighten all of this stuff out, that's all i can say right now. i promise you. >> reporter: ...another alleged sex tape of kelly has surfaced. this time with more than one underaged girl, according to attorney gloria allred. >> there was a v.h.s. tape of what appeared to be r kelly sexually abusing children. >> reporter: allred, who would not comment on whether she has seen the tape, held a news conference in new york with a couple from pennsylvania who say they found the tape at their home. >> i can't get the memory out of my head. >> reporter: gary dennis says he was cleaning out a box of old v.h.s. tapes when he found it. >> i noticed a sports tape but it also had r. kelly's name on it.

r. kelly appeared to be on the tape, but not in concert. instead he was sexually abusing underaged african american girls. >> reporter: last month, attorney michael avenatti said he turned over a tape to cook county prosecutors that allegedly showed kelly having sex with an underage girl. days later, prosecutors announced kelly had been charged with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. kelly pleaded not guilty and has denied any wrongdoing, as he asserted in his "cbs this morning" interview with gayle king. >> have you ever had sex with anyone under the age of 17? >> no. no. >> never? >> no! >> reporter: despite kelly's denials, allred urged anyone who may have an alleged r. kelly sex tape to turn it over to law enforcement. >> please do not sell them, do not give them away, do not distribute them if you have them. >> reporter: we spoke to kelly's attorney steve greenberg today.

hundreds of bullet casings littered the floor, remnants of a battle that destroyed an estimate 35,000 homes. who do you blame for all of this? >> personally. >> yeah. >> personally i have taken the decision not to blame anybody. because the scale of loss and the scale of atrocity makes it possible to blame everybody. >> reporter: it's estimated that more than half a million people have been killed in this war. many syrians have yet to see the full scale of loss. traffic has jammed the jordanian border as families who fled return to destruction. from east aleppo where it could take six years just to clear the debris, to the tourist town of palmyra. palmyra is perhaps best known for it's ancient ruins, but it also had a thriving new city and that's where we are right now. and look at the sheer scale of destruction. before the war started 80,000 people lived here. today we're today we're told

be euthanized after being catastrophically hurt. that's more than double the number of horses that died there last season-- and significantly more than prior years. the one mile oval has been roto- tilled and aerated and is now said to be in "outstanding condition." racing remains suspended, for now. a weekend of ice fishing turned dangerous when a sheet of ice cracked and broke away from lake erie's shoreline. it happened fast, stranding about 100 anglers north of ohio's catawba island. some braved the icy water to swim back to shore. a coast guard crew and helicopter helped rescue about 46 others. everyone is reported safe. next on the "cbs weekend news," big changes in the ranks of the scouts. pretty busy around 8:45 this morning, when a suspect is caught on surveillance camera, kept walking up and down, looking inside. the sheriff deputy vehicles, apparently he was trying to get one of them to confront him. the video was just released to the public. a man peeking in to some alameda county sheriff vehicles. investigators said he had a knife in his hand looking to attack a cop. >> at the time it looked like he was casing the vehicle, looking to try to break into the vehicles. >> reporter: deputies confronted the man, he dropped his knife at first and raised his shirt to show he had no other weapons. but then he picks up the knife and keeps advancing on the deputies, refusing to surrender. >> she calls for additional units to come. at that poth strategic approach to approach the n
