good morning from the studio 57 newsroom here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning, china temporarily grounded its boeing 737 max-8 planes after the deadly crash of one of the planes in ethiopia. the ethiopian airlines jetliner was en route to nairobi when it went down yesterday shortly after takeoff from ethiopia's capital. all 157 on board were killed. eight americans are among the dead. laura podesta is here in new york with the latest on the crash investigation. laura, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. this boeing 737 max-8 is the same type of plane that crashed in october in indonesia, also killing everyone on board. the similarities between the two disasters are putting global aviation authorities on alert. all 149 passengers and eight crew members were killed when an ethiopian airlines plane crashed shortly after takeoff sunday. >> the pilot mentioned that he

had difficulty. he wants tup. >> reporter: flight 302 went down just six minutes into its flights to nairobi, kenya. it left a 30-foot pit in the rural countryside. around farm animals to reach the scene. people from 35 countries are among the dead. eight of the victims are americans. >> i had a feeling -- >> reporter: mohamed ali's sister amina and her 5-year-old daughter sofia were two of 15 canadians that died. >> everybody loved her. she was friends with everyone. >> reporter: the jet was a new boeing 737 max-8, the same type of plane operated by indonesia's lion air that crashed shortly after takeoff october killing all 189 on board. >> there has to be a thorough investigation because there are haent teams assist s. reporter

hiopian inigs. >>hn looking at around 30 days to look at a preliminary report. that will rely heavily on the black boxes. >> reporter: ethiopian airlines has grounded all of its boeing 737 max-8s are being grounded until further notice. representatives haven't commented but did tweet that it was, quote, deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the passengers and crew. anne-marie? >> laura podesta here in new york. thank you. ahead on "cbs this morning," transportation correspondent kris van cleave takes an in-depth look at the recent problems for boeing and its latest generation of 737 aircraft. and at least 30 people were hurt after severe turbulence on a turkish airlines flight to new york's jfk airport. the boeing 777 left istanbul on saturday carrying 326 passengers. the plane was over maine when the turbulence hit.

passengers say it lasted about six minutes, and the injuries were mostly bumps, bruises, andp suffered a possible broken leg. the national weather service had issued turbulence advisories ahead of landing. new accusations against r. kelly. a new sex tape has surfaced allegedly showing the singer having sex with underage girls. the accusations come one day after kelly was released from jail in his child support case. a couple from pennsylvania said they found the tape at their home. >> r. kelly appeared to be on the tape but not in concert. instead, he was sexually abusing underage african-american girls. >> kelly's attorney says it is not the singer on the tape. kelly is charged with ten counts of aggravated criminal sexual testk with gayle king, kelly denies having sex with any underage girls. meanwhile, relatives of joycelyn savage, one of kelly's

two live-in girlfriends, are expected to hold a press conference. they're working with kelly's crisis manager to arrange a face to face with their daughter without kelly this week. they say kelly brainwashed their daughter and haven't seen her in two years. today president trump unveils a budget proposal that includes $8.6 billion for a border wall. meanwhile, a key house democrat says he's going to start new investigations into mr. trump. errol barnett reports. what we are looking for is corroborative evidence. >> reporter: adam schiff, head of the intelligence committee, said mr. trump's lies about moscow have raised questions about his intentions for the project. >> he may believe that when he leaves office that he still wants to build this tower. while that may not be criminal, it is nonetheless corrupt and distorts our policies. >> reporter: cohen begins a three-year prison sentence in

moscow and campaign finance violations. mr. trump said cohen asked him directly about a presidential pardon which he turned down. cohen denies making a request for a pardon. >> given his checkered past, if he's breathing he's lying. >> reporter: republican john kennedy who sits on the senate judiciary committee told "face the nation" cohen cannot be trusted. >> i don't blame him for asking. it was inappropriate, but he shouldn't have lied to congress about it. >> reporter: president trump is preparing to announce his new budget proposal monday which will include an increase in defense spending and 5% cuts across the board in domestic expenditures. democrats are already resisting the president's effort to include border funding, as well. >> the president was forced to admit defeat and reopen the government without getting his wall. the same thing will repeat itself if he tries this again.d defended the budget against criticism it would not eliminate

the record deficit for 15 years. kudlow saying he predicts better than projected economic growth. with democrats already forcefully resisting this plan, the threat of yet another government shutdown returns. errol barnett, cbs news, west palm beach, florida. many democratic presidential candidates are back on the campaign trail today after a weekend of drumming up support ex candidates including elizabeth warren, amy klobuchar, julian castro, bernie sanders, and jay inslee made appearances at the south by southwest festival in austin. texas is an early primary state. former congressman beto o'rourke, mulling a presidential bid, also made a surprise appearance at the festival. a new cnn/"des moines register" media com poll asked which democrat would be the first choice for president. former vice president joe biden who has not announced his saers.

venezuela's opposition leader juan guaido is expected to call for a national emergency following days of blackouts in the south american nation. power has been restored to parts of venezuela, but many areas remain without electricity and communications. electricity was cut to 70% of the country last week. the deaths of at least 17 hospital patients are linked to the power outages. president maduro accused guaido of sabotaging the power system. a powerful storm is expected to slam parts of the west coast today before bringing a potential blizzard to the plains this week. a winter storm warning is in effect across parts of california. the national weather service confirmed at least four tornadoes touched down on a tornado in louisiana was one of 15 reported across the southeast. another tornado destroyed mobile homes in arkansas. parts of mississippi and tennessee also saw wind damage and power outages. coming up on the "morning

when something like this happens it's a reminder to everyone that these are wild animals, and safety needs to be their number-one concern. >> a bystander shoved a water bottle through the cage, and the jaguar let go of the woman. zoo officials say the jaguar never got out of her enclosure and will not be put down. "the new york times" says the trump administration is working on a proposal to use social media to help identify people claiming social security disability benefits even though they are not disabled. beecause of a ba person claiming in a photo posted on facebook. that could be used as evidence that their alleged injury was not disabling.xpted to include proposals to combat social security fraud in his 2020 budget which will be issued today. the "denver post" reports there are calls for changes after a black man was confronted while picking up trash in his yard.
