captioning funded by cbs good morning, from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. a team of u.s. aviation experts has arrived at the site where an ethiopian airlines jetter crashed killing 157 people. the boeing 737 max 8 jetliner crashed shortly after takeoff sunday. the black boxes have been recovered. there are new renewed safety concerns, though, about the model of the plane as more airlines suspend it. laura podesta is new york. laura, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. here in the u.s., the faa is urging patience until we know more. but at least two senators, dianne feinstein and richard blumenthal are calling for all boeing 737 planes to be grounded until we know the cause of the ethiopian airlines crash. more than a dozen of airlines in a handful of countries have

grounded the boeing 737 max 8 after sunday's deadly crash in ethiopia. southwest, american and united are sticking with the aircraft and the faa has urged patience, saying it does not have enough information about what happened to flight 302. the black boxes recovered monday will help determine why the plane went down, killing all 157 people on board. >> boeing builds fantastic airplanes. even if this was the same thing as the lion air accident six months ago, it is very easily solvable. >> reporter: in late october, a boeing lion airplane operated by lion air crashed off of indonesia. killing all on board. the pilots reported technical difficulties. the two planes appeared to struggle to gain altitude, before making a steep nosedive and crashing less than 15 minutes after takeoff. >> very much well-known in the

community. >> reporter: mucaad hue says abdalla was one of eight americans who died on sunday. friends knew him as feraj. >> you can see that in the quality. >> reporter: after the lion air crash, boeing started working on the design of the max 8. the faa said those changes must be done by next month. there are currently 350 boeing 737 max jets in service around the world. more than 70 of them are operated by u.s. airlines. anne-marie. >> laura podesta here in new york. thank you so much, laura. the white house is signaling that president trump is still considering a pardon for his former campaign chair paul manafort. manafort was sentenced to nearly four years in prison last week for financial crimes. in a rare briefing yesterday, press second sarah sanders was asked about the possibility of a pardon.

>> why hasn't the president ruled out a pardon for paul manafort? >> the president has made his decision on that clear. he'll make a decision when he's ready. >> former cia director john brennan says he has no doubt president trump will pardon manafort. manafort is facing another sentencing for other crimes, including failing to register as a foreign agent. president trump has unveiled his 2020 budget proposal. the $4.7 trillion spending blueprint includes billions for a border wall and sets up a new showdown with congress. mola lenghi reports from capitol hill. >> reporter: president trump delivered his 2020 budget proposal to congress monday asking for $8.6 billion in new funding for his long-promised border wall. >> he thinks it's important to secure the country as one of its most basic constitutional responsibilities. >> reporter: the funds would go

toward building 700 million miles of barriers along the border. >> we need to continue to secure the country. we need to continue to secure the border. we're not going to be bashful about this. >> reporter: democratic leaders are already pushing back. >> the budget requests we received today would be a gut punch to the middle class. a handout to powerful special interests. the wealthiest few. >> reporter: president trump's pursuit of border wall funding led to a record-breaking partial government shutdown earlier this year, something that could happen again in the fall. >> the president failed to convince congress, the american people and perhaps most glaringly mexico to pay for its border wall. >> reporter: senate republicans are set to vote this week on a resolution passed in the house, blocking the national emergency the president declared to finance the wall. >> let's not forget the only reason he has the authority to call a national emergency is because congress gave him the right to do so. they failed to do their job. the president's fulfilling his duty. >> reporter: in a tweet earlier, the president urged americans to

stand with him, saying in part, it's abo stopping crime, drugs, et cetera. mola lenghi, capitol hill. housea says she does not support the impeachment of president trump. >> i really don't believe in it. they wanted me to impeach president bush for the iraq war. i didn't believe in it then, i don't believe in it now. it divides the country, unless there's some conclusive evidence that takes us to that place. >> pelosi says it would be a distraction to what congress wants to accomplish. it comes after they have launched broad investigation into mr. trump's family and white house. secretary of state mike pompeo says the u.s. is withdrawing the last of its staff at the embassy in venezuela. following days of blackouts in the country, electricity went out thursday.

engineers have restored power in some communities, however, food is spoiling. there is looting and protests have broken out. schools and public offices remain closed today. pompeo says the remaining diplomats in venezuela will be removed by the end of the week. and this morning, we're hearing from a woman who was clawed by a jaguar after getting too close to the animal. it happened at a zoo in arizona and she shared her story with errol barnett. >> reporter: leanne who does not want us to use her last name knows she's lucky to tell this tale. >> the jaguar was up against the fence. and we happened to be walking by and we said, hey, let's get some good pictures. >> reporter: and in a heartbeat -- this cell phone video captured the moment after the jaguar at the wildlife world zoo near phoenix reached through the fence, seriously wounding

leann leanne's arm. >> i was in the wrong for leaning over the barrier. but i do think maybe the zoo should look into moving their fence back. >> reporter: this is where the incident took place. you can see there's only a few feet between the jaguar's enclosure and this waist-high barrier. the jaguar at the center of the exhibit has been removed from this exhibit temporarily. >> anybody can reach out. i'm not the first, and if they don't move the fence, i'm probably not going to be the last. >> reporter: in fact, this exact same thing happened at this same enclosure with this same annual last summer. jeff allen received several stitches and said the zoo put its barriers too close. zoo officials maintain the rules weren't followed. >> when people do not respect the barriers, there's always a chance there might be a problem. >> reporter: leanne is hoping to turn her too close encounter into an example. >> i never expected it. and i feel like, we're all human, we make mistakes.ani lea. >> reporter: and she says her next close-up may be further away. >> was it worth it? >> no, not worth it.

he was awarded the grammy lifetime achievement last year. hal blaine was 90. mma fighter conor mcgregor was arrested last night. a fraternity is suspended after a student's death. the orange county register reports on the death of a university of california the irvine student. police say he died of alcohol poisoning following after off-campus party. 18-year-old noah domingo was found dead in january at a school campus. the school says he was at a party hosted by members of his fraternity cigna alpha epsilon. the stool suspended the frat. it was also shut down by the fraternity's national organization and police are investigating the student's death. "the washington post" reports a florida cop allegedly used a police database as his own personal dating service to search for and meet women. investigators say 36-year-old sergeant lionel marines conducted hundreds of questionable database searches of women. detectives spoke with 150 women he allegedly contacted inappropriately through social

media, telephone calls and visits to their home. they also say that he had sex with some of the women while on duty. marines resigned in october and the fbi is looking into possible criminal charges. "the wall street journal" reports court documents reveal google agreed to pay $135 million to two top executives who left the company after being accused of sexual harassment. the court documents were released yesterday as part of a civil lawsuit filed by shareholders. the suit claims google's parent company alphabet agreed to make the payments and cover up the reasons for the executives' departures. the former executives andy rubin and am md it singhal denied it. and the miami herald and the miami her related said mma fighter and boxer conor

and bowing. the dow closed up 200 points s&p 500 gained 40, and the nasdaq jumped 149. wells fargo ceo tim sloan is scheduled to testify before congress today. the house and financial services committee is expected to probe what is described as a pattern of abuses. the hearing comes as wells continues to face a 2016 scandal that revealed bank employees opened millions of fake accounts to meet aggressive sales goals. in the meantime, honda is recalling 1 million vehicles in the u.s. and canada because of dangerous air bags. affected models are the accord, civic, crv, element and odyssey and ridgeline. the air bags could explode injuring drivers and passengers. at least 23 people have died from the problem worldwide, and hundreds more were injured. owners are being told to take their vehicles to dealers to have their problems fixed. check your pantry, pillsbury flour is being recalled due to

a new jersey man is receiving thousands of happy birthday phone calls and texts from strangers thanks to a prank by his sons. christopher ferry turned 62 this weekend. his two sons took out a huge billboard on an atlantic city highway with their dad's picture, his cell phone number and the message, wish my dad happy birthday. love your sons. ferry is also getting noticed when he goes out. >> waitress recognized me, she said, oh, you're the billboard dad. that's my new handle, i'm the billboard dad. >> how do you like that? >> i love it. it's really cool. >> ferry said he received 10,000 calls. one of his sons said growing up, they'd tell restaurant servers it was their dad's birthday just to make a fuss.

meg oliver shows us how twin sisters led to a breakthrough for researchers. >> reporter: 97-year-old scott hughes and her identical twin sister virginia were always close. when virginia started having trouble with her memory and thinking, scott knew something wasn't right. and virginia was diagnosed with alzheimer's disease. >> it was not like her because she was so outgoing and loving. she wasn't going to be who she had been before. and that is tragic to see in a person you love. >> reporter: with one twin having alzheimer's and the other healthy, researchers at duke eye center studying the link between eye and brain health thought the sisters were a good case to examine. they took images of their eyes saying the sister with alzheimer's had decreased blood flow in the retina. that spurred a study of more than 200 people. >> cognitive healthy normal individuals do not have these changes in the retina. >> reporter: leader research
