>> good afternoon. thanks for joining us. >> the feds are calling it operation varsity blues. >> kpix 5's jackie ward is live. >> reporter: i'm here on campus because stanford is just one of many schools caught up in what the u.s. justice department is calling the largest college scam in history. it involves bribery, laundering and paying the students to take the s.a.t.s for others. >> it's about the widening corruption for elite college admissions through the steady application of wealth combined with fraud. >> one of the people named i stanford sailing team coach john vandemoer. >> we believed parents, coaches and facilitators lied and cheated at the expense of hard working students and taxpayers.

>> reporter: felicity huffman and lori laughlin are among 33 parents charged in the cheating plot. >> insidious, selfish and shameful. >> reporter: authorities say they paid big bucks to bribe coaches and administrators to guarantee their children admission to elite schools like stanford, ucla, usc, yale and georgetown. >> in many instances, singer helped parents take staged photographs of their children engaged in particular sports. other times, singer & associates used stock photos that they pulled off the internet, sometimes photo shopping the face of the child on to the picture of the athlete and submitting it in support of the applications for these children to elite schools. >> reporter: prosecutors say the f weali' a t willnot be a separat justice system either. >> reporter: coach vandemoer is expected to plead guilty today. his attorney along with

the big question now, did the suspect know his victim. kpix 5's anne makovec is at a growing memorial. >> reporter: this memorial is growing and now we know the man who police think is responsible. carlos eduardo caranza, a 24- year-old who police describe as a transient is arrested for the murder of bambi larson. she was found in her bedroom february 28th after not showing up to work. >> shocking isn't even close to the word. there's no words to describe what happened. >> reporter: the neighbor is still reeling from the news of his friend's death and now the arrest. >> people die naturally and you feel bad but this is a whole other level. >> reporter: knowing a murderer was on the loose after bambi's death had the south san jose

jose and gilroy say they are being pressured to join a rival union. currently they're part of the california nurses association but recently the county bought the hospitals from a nonprofit that went bankrupt. >> we have one of the highest standards of patient care here, complements of our cna union. the county is not recognizing that union. >> the county wants nurses to join the registered nurses professional association but nurses are resisting pointing to wewages end. meanwhile, the hospitals say they will still operate. today u.s. aviation experts arrived at the scene of the ethiopian crash. representatives from the faa and the ntsb are there right now. yesterday investigators found the jet's two flight recorders but an airline official says that one is partially damaged. meantime, the netherlands,

britain and germany are among others who closed their airports to the boeing 737. there is pressure on the faa to do the same. >> reporter: in the u.s., southwest and american airlines which operate two of the largest 737 max fleets are still flying them. in an update to airlines, the faa says it does not have enough data from sunday's crash to take action yet but will if the investigation indicates the need to do so. >> there's no reason that the faa should be trying to save face. >> reporter: democratic senator richard blumenthal is among others who is calling for the planes to be grounded right away. >> they ought to change planes, change flights, change airlines, whatever they need to do to avoid flying on these 737s. >> reporter: on monday, flight attendant's unions pushed back. >> we need to hear from the faa with transparency here about
