>> good afternoon. thanks for joining us. >> the feds are calling it operation varsity blues. >> kpix 5's jackie ward is live. >> reporter: i'm here on campus because stanford is just one of many schools caught up in what the u.s. justice department is calling the largest college scam in history. it involves bribery, laundering and paying the students to take the s.a.t.s for others. >> it's about the widening corruption for elite college admissions through the steady application of wealth combined with fraud. >> one of the people named i stanford sailing team coach john vandemoer. >> we believed parents, coaches and facilitators lied and cheated at the expense of hard working students and taxpayers.

>> reporter: felicity huffman and lori laughlin are among 33 parents charged in the cheating plot. >> insidious, selfish and shameful. >> reporter: authorities say they paid big bucks to bribe coaches and administrators to guarantee their children admission to elite schools like stanford, ucla, usc, yale and georgetown. >> in many instances, singer helped parents take staged photographs of their children engaged in particular sports. other times, singer & associates used stock photos that they pulled off the internet, sometimes photo shopping the face of the child on to the picture of the athlete and submitting it in support of the applications for these children to elite schools. >> reporter: prosecutors say the f weali' a t willnot be a separat justice system either. >> reporter: coach vandemoer is expected to plead guilty today. his attorney along with

prosecutors have agreed on a recommended 18-month prison sentence. we'll see what happens there. in all, 49 people have been charged so far. at stanford, jackie ward, kpix 5. >> stanford university releasing this statement saying in part, quote, the alleged behavior runs completely counter to stanford's value. we have no evidence that the alleged conduct involves anyone else at stanford or is associated with any other team. however, we will be undertaking an internal review to confirm that. this statement late today from the ncaa as well saying, quote, the charges brought forth today are troubling and should be a concern for all of higher education. f.b.i. san francisco says it arrested 11 people in connection with this case. for a look at the complete list of california defendants in this college admissions scandal, go to our website, kpix.com and we'll have much more on this story on kpix 5 news at 5 and 6. police have made an arrest in the murder of a woman in the south bay.

the big question now, did the suspect know his victim. kpix 5's anne makovec is at a growing memorial. >> reporter: this memorial is growing and now we know the man who police think is responsible. carlos eduardo caranza, a 24- year-old who police describe as a transient is arrested for the murder of bambi larson. she was found in her bedroom february 28th after not showing up to work. >> shocking isn't even close to the word. there's no words to describe what happened. >> reporter: the neighbor is still reeling from the news of his friend's death and now the arrest. >> people die naturally and you feel bad but this is a whole other level. >> reporter: knowing a murderer was on the loose after bambi's death had the south san jose

neighborhood on edge. >> just doesn't want to step out of the house. >> reporter: the circumstances of this crime are still a mystery. >> until we know the entire story, i don't know. >> reporter: larson was a manager at a local biotech firm. she lived her alone with a dog and a cat. >> beautiful girl. she was a good friend. she was always happy, smiling. >> reporter: so many questions out there this afternoon as to if these two had any sort of relationship or if they ever even met each other. we'll find out more at a news conference this afternoon. in san jose, anne makovec, kpix 5. >> that news conference is expected to begin at 2:30 this afternoon. chp officers are on the look outfor a suspect in a freeway shooting. chopper 5 flew over the scene. police say a man was driving that white four-door sedan when he was shot. no word on his conditions. officers are searching the area for shell casings.

a bay area councilwoman is speaking out days after her 21- year-old son was gunned down in southern california. >> i want people to understand victor is not a homicide number or a statistic or just another black boy gunned down in south central los angeles. i want you all to know that victor came into the world a drummer. >> victor maccel lane write is the son -- who is studying jazz as a senior at usc: police say early sundaymorning a group of men approached him near the campus, shot him after demanding money. victor later died at the hospital. the suspects are still on the loose. nurses from two santa clara county hospitals walked off the job today for a one-day strike. cg >> nurses from hospitals in san

jose and gilroy say they are being pressured to join a rival union. currently they're part of the california nurses association but recently the county bought the hospitals from a nonprofit that went bankrupt. >> we have one of the highest standards of patient care here, complements of our cna union. the county is not recognizing that union. >> the county wants nurses to join the registered nurses professional association but nurses are resisting pointing to wewages end. meanwhile, the hospitals say they will still operate. today u.s. aviation experts arrived at the scene of the ethiopian crash. representatives from the faa and the ntsb are there right now. yesterday investigators found the jet's two flight recorders but an airline official says that one is partially damaged. meantime, the netherlands,

britain and germany are among others who closed their airports to the boeing 737. there is pressure on the faa to do the same. >> reporter: in the u.s., southwest and american airlines which operate two of the largest 737 max fleets are still flying them. in an update to airlines, the faa says it does not have enough data from sunday's crash to take action yet but will if the investigation indicates the need to do so. >> there's no reason that the faa should be trying to save face. >> reporter: democratic senator richard blumenthal is among others who is calling for the planes to be grounded right away. >> they ought to change planes, change flights, change airlines, whatever they need to do to avoid flying on these 737s. >> reporter: on monday, flight attendant's unions pushed back. >> we need to hear from the faa with transparency here about

what steps they're taking to address the concerns of the public and the crews who are working on these planes. >> reporter: some passengers are worried, too. >> i am looking at making sure that i'm not going to put myself on a 737. >> say a little prayer and got here safe. >> reporter: ross ammer is a retired airline captain who flew an older version of the 737. >> we don't know if this is the same thing that happened a few months ago. >> reporter: he said the data and voice recorders need to be analyzed before action can be taken. >> perhaps grounding may be the right thing to do until we find out exactly what happened and boeing comes up with a fix. >> reporter: kris van cleave. >> boeing said it was confident in the safety of the 737. relatives of the victims are arriving at the crash site in ethiopia to mourn the loss of their loved ones.

piles of clothing and mangled debris leave families searching for answers. a total of eight americans were among the 157 people killed. among them, two brothers on vacation. they were graduates of shasta high school. also killed, antwuan lewis, an army captain from illinois. he was in ethiopia to do christian missionary work. dozens of international aid work workers from a number of countries were on the flights. ethiopian airlines says it should take five days to identify all the remains. former vice-president joe biden is reportedly close to announcing he will run for president. biden delivered a speech to the international association of firefighters in washington d.c. this morning. he got an enthusiastic welcome and hinted at a 2020 presidential bid. >> i appreciate the energy you showed when i got up here.

charges on customers. college students graduate with an average debt of more than $28,000. for many, can be a struggle to pay it off. experts say you need a plan to manage college loans before you sign the forms. >> reporter: megan combs went to college to pursue her dream of working in the arts but at age 32, she's still struggling to pay for her education. >> i just want to get this paid. i wants to be in the clear. i'm so tired of this debt. >> reporter: to get her master's degree she took out $61,000 in loans and has made nearly $27,000 in payments but because those payments were too small to cover the interest, she now owes $66,000. >> i should have read the fine print on every single one of my loans. >> reporter: megan is far from alone. student debt topped $1.5 t the >> one of the great rules of thumb is to say what do i think i will earn in the first year

you can see a few more clouds in the sky compared to yesterday. that's all thanks to a cold front pushing across our region. it's a dry front but it's bringing some clouds and also kicking up the winds. temperatures are running in the mid to upper 50s to low 60s. 61 right now in concord. oakland, 56. g ativ san jose, santa rosa and mid- 50s for san francisco right now. high def doppler, we're dry for the most part though you can see a few sprinkles along the coast. this is pretty much about it with the cold front. red wood terrace, may be a few sprinkles out there and that is it. this is the satellite and radar view of the low pressure system dropping the front our way. it is a weak front and mainly dry. really just kicking up the wind. as we go through the day on futurecast, the clouds should sweep through and we are looking at sunshine as we head through the rest of our afternoon. and plenty of sun expected wednesday through the next several days.
